The thing about the road king is you essentially get three bikes for the price of one. You can ride without the windshield, you can add a windshield, or you can add a batwing fairing for extreme long range riding, without all the other headaches with electronics etc. Plus if your infotainment screen ever goes, the cost of replacing one is stupid expensive. Not to mention if you ride with a full face the radio is almost useless at highway speeds etc. The new wave of bluetooth systems like cardo packtalk allows you to listen to the radio, talk to other riders in your group (up to 15), make and recieve calls, and get turn by turn navigation, all through your phone. If you ride with a skid lid, then by all means, they make the batwing that takes 6x9s and has bluetooth connectivity with your phone that will be way better sounding than stock and less expensive if the system ever needs repaired. In the end its all personal preference but for my style of riding, the road king is "king" as it handles way better in the curves without all the additional weight up top. And its just darn sexy. Ymmv. But good review

jon angus Totally agree - plus with a fairing / windshield you lose the connection with the road and the feeling that you are a biker (rather than a car on two wheels)

IMO the RKS is the best looking of the touring lineup. Easy enough to add a screen without ruining the look. If the '18 RKS had the 114 it would have been a serious contender for my money.

I absolutely love the HD Road King Classic (I wish they were being made in the US). The simplicity, the spoked wheels, the leather bags, the white wall tires, and the avalanche of aftermarket parts. It was such a joy and a beauty to behold. For my retirement, I purchased a brand new 2012 Road King Classic (blue/black) that I configured with my preferences. It had the touring trunk, the HD GPS, the BOOM audio twin speakers, adjustable backrest, etc. Unfortunately, in 2017, the divorce lawyers required a sacrifice and my dream motorcycle was lost on the chopping block. But I digress. The current 2020 HD Road King and the RK Special, have lots of the same appeal of the 2012 Classic. Though cosmetically different, the 2020 RK it very appealing, with its updated colors, hard bags and Slicer II Cast Aluminum wheels. My favorite 2020 color is Silver Pine/Spruce. My Favorite RKS is the blacked out version in black. Very sexy and I love the 114 Milwaukee 8 engine. I’m 56 years young and have been riding since I was 13. I’ve lost count of the number of motorcycles I’ve had the pleasure to ride and own. Having said that, my 2012 Road King Classic was the best riding experience I’ve had on a motorcycle. I’m retired now and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford a motorcycle again, but at the very least I have plenty of found experiences. No one will ever take those away. If you own a HD Road King, enjoy the good times and make lots of good memories. You've picked a winner.

Traded in a 2018 road glide special 107 for a 2019 road king special 114. 114 has noticable power difference at passing speed. I prefer bluetooth earbuds and my android cell phone GPS mounted to handlebars to the "house" on the front of the road glide. Speakers distorted at 60mph + with wind noise on the road glide to where you couldn't hear the radio even if its cranked. Yeah you can get louder speakers but eventually you'll go deaf. Never liked the Harley navigation system. I'm just a Road King guy. Both are great bikes.

Just to add one more thing, the windshield on the Road King offers better wind protection than the road glide to me. Even after I put a klock werks tall wind screen on the Road glide. Got the same wind screen that comes on the road king classic but in black. I am disappointed that the 2019 Road King Special did not come with a LED headlight like the Road Glide does. The 114 is great though.

Nice review. Great country/scenery to ride there, wherever you are. I'm in California so I would definitely be not used to riding on the left hand side. That said I did not realize the RK Special came without a windshield. That is how I came to look at your review. Buffeting was the issue on my 06 Road Glide. Enough that I could not fix it and am now on a BMW R1200 GSA. I'm missing a Harley though and know that the Company is working to address small issues such as buffeting. Ill look for a review on the Road King Standard which has the windshield to see what the riders think.

If you don’t want a full touring bike (Street Glide etc), but you want to tour occasionally, enough that the Softail (like a Street bob) would be hard work, this sounds like a happy medium maybe? It can tour, but also work well as an everyday bike you can also throw around a little on a Sunday. A hybrid of both maybe?

Hi ! Thanks for a great review of this and other bikes. Great channel with great content ! I am getting back on a Harley after many years of other brands. But I can’t decide between the Heritage Classic and the Road King Special. I have ridden the Heritage Classic and really liked it. Found it comfortable, easy to ride and a good package. I have not ridden the Road King Special because the dealer didn’t have as a demo bike. But love the look ! How would you compare the two ? Would love some help and input. I am looking for a do it all Harley. A bike that is fun on the backroads, highway comfort, that can work for two up riding (but it’s not the primary use), saddlebags and cruise control. Both bikes have all these things. Which one should I go for ? Thanks a bunch! Keep up the great work !

Don’t need a fairing or front “screen”... ride old school with the wind in your face... get rid of the floorboards, and get forward controls so to stretch your legs out.. then pull that exhaust off all the way to the heads and get all new Vance n Hines tru dual exhaust, Cam, Tuner, and get some sound. The new M8 sounds like a sewing machine, not a HD.

After being a driving instructor for 9.5 years and now a HGV driver, it infuriates me to see people pootling along at 50/60mph on motorways and D/C's when they should be doing 70. On Single roads NSL is 60mph unless otherwise stated. ;)
