2019 RMZ450 Ride Review

7-11-19: Got a chance to ride my buddy's new 2019 RMZ450 today. This bike is totally stock with only about 2 hours use. Fun to get back on a RMZ450 again. My last one was a 2013 model. The new 2019 still feels like a RMZ: narrow and slim ergonomics with smooth old school 4-stroke power that requires a good old fashion kick (or two) to start it up. The grips are Suzuki style (thin and hard) and combined with low Renthal Fatbars give a little more feedback from the front end especially on slap down landings. The power still has the same feel as my 2011/13 RZ450's: smooth and old school 4-stroke style connected to the rear wheel. There is quick initial response then the power flattens with revs (opposite feeling on a 2019 CRF450 or KTM450SXF). The engine has good resistance to stalling at low rpm's. The muffler is louder than I expected considering the large size. The steering is typical RMZ with quick response to steering inputs. The track was hard pack, slippery, with small chop in some areas so I softened the damping a few clicks front and rear (the rear actually has no clicks - just turns) to dial in a little more comfort. The feel of the suspension was firm overall and the rear end did kick a little on decel bumps. The stock suspension setting is more suited to prepped motocross tracks and faster riders. The RMZ feels heavy when lifting it onto a stand but seems to loose some of the weight in motion.
New RMZ450's can be purchased at a very reasonable price now and that leaves money for personalization. A slightly higher set of more compliant Pro Taper bars along with some new grips would make the ergo's feel better and provide a more compliant feel up front. The suspension hardware is high quality Showa so a few shim changes could dial in a more effective individual setting. The 19 RMZ450 is a solid bike in more ways than one!

The bike is awesome. Raced it this season and not a single issue. The shootouts are bullshit, never take into account the price.

The 2019 RMZ450 I rode was new and always started in 1~3 kicks. Sometimes it requires a pretty healthy kick and don't turn the throttle while kicking. You can also try turning the idle up a little and if there is a cold start button use it on first start ups. Brand new engines can be tight and take a 3~5 hours to loosen up. If it takes more than 4~5 kicks there might be an issue.

I see the newer suzuki bikes come in last in every shootout. Are they not that good of bikes or whats the deal with them? They seem like damn good bikes to me.

All the latest 450F moto bikes are very capable. The RMZ has a more classic old school thumper feel - slower revving engine and it is the heaviest of the current 450MX bikes even without electric start. RMZ450's can be purchased at big discounts leaving plenty of money for personalization.

The RMZ450 engine has an old school 4-stroke character with somewhat slow revving smooth power. The engine runs clean at low rpm and with a Rekluse Autoclutch is almost stall proof (my 2013 RMZ450 was great in the woods with the Rekluse). The RMZ chassis is stiff so it responds quickly to inputs which makes it feel more agile but there is more track and trail feedback to the rider. RMZ's can be purchased relatively cheap so that leaves room for personalization (like suspension valving and a Rekluse auto clutch). Once you've owned a 450 with e-start its kind of hard to go back to kick starting!

I've owned the 2009/11/13 RMZ450's myself and never had any issues (engine or chassis). The base engine design has been around a long time so seems to be well sorted with classic broad 4-stroke powerband. Kickstart is a deal breaker for some riders. The chassis is firm. Deals can be found on these bike but deals can be found on a lot of bikes now (like KX450's). The '23 YZ450F is a different 450F kind of experience.... kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXalsdpqqs2diNo.html
