Keep it on all the time. It helps the turbo actuator on the variable side of things keep functioning. It’ll also save your brakes

I don't have a diesel...but using my tow/haul on my 2014 3500 5.7 hemi makes a helluva difference, just accelerate to keep speed up if I get too slowed down. This discussion is really valuable...thanks for highlighting the uses of these areas that make driving safer etc.

what made you pick a hemi ram 3500 and why the 5.7 over 6.4?

My 09 3500 is loaded with a plumbing and electrical body in the bed. It weighs about 11,000 lbs. all the time. I got a little over 190,000 miles out of the front pads. The rears got to about 170,000. The exhaust brake is on all the time. Love it! I do need to replace my brake hoses now at a little over 193,000. Also need to replace my actuator on the turbo. It sticks and surges.

I use mine when I coast down a hill and want to slow down, or keep a certain speed but don’t want to ride the brakes all the way down. Makes downshifting more effective in the diesel.

If you don't have a load and want the best mpg, you'll want the ability to coast without the exhaust brake slowing you down so you can coast further. I am normally empty so I normally have EB off or in auto unless I'm exiting highway and would otherwise need to do a lot of braking. That said, the EB does generally get used for some purpose every time I drive. Coming out of the mountains, I keep the EB on full and love it... just set cruise and if you anticipate curve, cancel cruise and let the EB slow you down for the curve via EB, use accelerator to maintain this slower speed for curve (so you don't continue slowing down more than needed), then hit resume once you're out of the curve if the speed limit hasn't changed. Driving out of Rock Mountain National Park, I hit my brakes literally a handful of times very briefly, whereas everyone else ahead of me seemed like they were on their brakes over half of the time.

What I will say is this the exhaust brake works insanely well with the manual G56 because you can keep those rpms up through the down shift of the gears makes feel like I’m in a big rig! Always make sure your right foot is resting on the brakes so your stop lights are lit!!!!!

I run my exhaust brake 24/7. Doesn’t matter if I’m loaded, or empty. It cleans the turbo, helps warm the engine faster and keeps my brakes from wearing out too quickly. I’ve never noticed a mileage decrease, either.

Never leave home without it. The brake on the 19 ho is incredible. Paul you should do a video on manual adjustment of the high idle through cruise control buttons. Cool feature but i don't have a channel to share it on haha.

Random note, your videos make me want to get a Ram truck more than anything else out there. I don't know a comparable channel with hundreds of videos on F350s, for example, so by watching you I feel far more familiar with the Rams. Chrysler ought to pay you or give some incentive! At the very least they should invite you out to reveals/press events to check out new trucks.

PD Diesel Power Paul on a side note I’ve done some studies on my 17 Ram 2500 and when I don’t use the exhaust brake. For let say a month. Normal everyday driving not towing. I see a considerable difference in the efficacy of the exhaust braking. Sometimes the ring gets stuck and effects how well the exhaust braking is applied. To which I then get it on a freeway during low traffic times and down shift and cycle it speed up down shift and so on then after a few times I literally fall forward and it works better than the brakes will. But also noticed the more weight I carry in the back the more power the exhaust brake produces too. What I’ve found to keep the turbo healthy is you must use it or lose it. So know my scrap and grocery gettin ass uses 100% of the time haulin when stuff is in the back. And 50% of time when I’m empty. Otherwise the ring just binds up on the coked vanes and destroys the turbo actuator. Now that’s probably never a problem for your hotshots because it’s getting used much more than guys like me. You know my Tradesmen is my poor mans caddy 😂 lol! Know what I’m sayin!

Hey guys, love the videos from Paul and reading through the comments from everyone. I am in need of some help/direction regarding my turbo actuator. Its acting up, exhaust break coming on even when my foot is on the skinny pedal. I have purchased a new replacement actuator but now time for install. What do you guys use to pre-aline and calibrat your turbo actuators? Can I use Cummins Insite, if so what do I data link are you guys using? Thanks!

I use mine every day, except in the winter on snow or ice covered roads.

I have a 2019 RAM 2500 with Cummins engine. Does anyone know how to keep the Exhaust Brake ON all the time? Pushing the EB button everytime I start the engine is going to wear out the button. Thanks for any advice in advance.

Having the EB on when idling or warm up actual assist with lowering the oil/fuel dilution issues where the fuel sprays in to the last cylinder/exhaust for burning DPF.

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 with 162k miles. I have always used the EB and brakes are still at 75%. Keeps the EB from carbon freeze up as well.

I cannot keep mine from coming on during startup under a certain temp. Dont matter if the button on on or off

It is possible that exhaust brake ( engine brake ) pushed 2 exhaust valves from the head to the piston had exhaust brake on at the exit ramp with tow mode on.

Full exhaust brake mode with my G56........all the time.

A friend of mine told me to always run with exhaust brake “ON” whether I’m towing or not. Said the baffles will seize up eventually if you drive a lot without it on. Anyone else here this?

What do you think of using both the tow/haul mode and exhaust brake at the same time? It seems like my truck downshifts very aggressively as soon as I let of the throttle when both are on. But only one on and it’s much better.

My opinion - do not use Tow Haul mode when not towing. Tow Haul affects down shifting and is designed for use when a heavy towed load is pushing your truck. Do not use Tow Haul unless you're towing.

My old 05 got 140k. The current truck i have is 105k and still original. No reason new trucks cant get almost 200k miles.

13k miles on my truck and exhaust brake is in since I picked it up from the dealer brand new.

I drive with it on all the time. LOL

So is it normal that I tell my wife and kid to be quiet so I can listen to the sound of my exhaust brake???? Got the truck with the alpine stereo and keep it turned off so I can hear the motor lmao

Love the content. Have been here for long time lol I went into my local ram dealer and checked out a kong bed fam 2500. I loved the longhorn trim model. I sat in the ram and I felt like I had no head room and it was kind of a deal breaker. I liked the sunroof option but I’m 6’3 and my head was hitting the roof and I wish the chair lowered more like the fords do. Not I’m in a bind to choose between a ram and ford and I’m leaning towards ford cause it has more head room with a panaramic roof but I also love the ram trucks. I need your help lol

Look at the older 2017 models. 2018s they have newer 2019 seats that sit higher. My 2017 i sit on the floor compared to the 2018 model. The 2019 seems lower, but dont get the sunroof. Youll have tons of room. I personally like the sunroof, but practicality and preventing more maintenance in the future its better without. Fords panoramic roof vibrates after a while.

I keep mine on alllllllllllllllllll the time, before I roll it gets turned on and with my delete it sounds even better and slows down the truck even faster.

You should use it all the time . Not because it’s awesome and it is but because it helps the veins in the turbo move back and forth removing soot. But bad news for vgt turbo dodges they will fail anyway. Mine did at 71000. Good luck and run that exhaust brake.

I have a 2008 ram 3500 dually 6.7 cummins Early on (50,000km) I had a VGT turbo code come on, looked like it was done. Turbo blades not moving fully, something like that Made some inquiry’s and one suggestion was to take it out on the road put the pedal to the floor, let off, do it repeatedly. I had nothing to lose It worked, the idea being to force the blades to their full travel, as they move by centrifugal force. Seems the base under the blades carbons up, too much easy in town driving. And they need to move full travel to keep the carbon off Every now and then I put it to the floor after it’s warmed up good and moving at least 30 mph I haven’t had a problem since 300,000 km now

Going from a hemi 2500 to a Cummins 3500, I feel so much safer towing. Exhaust brake is worth the price of the truck.

I have 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 and when going downhill pulling my trailer my exhaust break is makes a really bad squeal, like squeaky breaks. Is that exhaust break making that noise? Do you have any idea what that is?

I'm becoming adept at shutting off TOW/HAUL and the exhaust brake, and canceling cruise, as I crest a summit and I'm looking at a reasonable downgrade. I don't like to fight gravity. But if I can't see what's around a bend, or it's a steep hill, I don't take chances.

Wait a minute! Exhaust brakes use pads? What are you talking about? My exhaust brake closed off the exhaust and back pressures the engine.

Who cares about brake pads? Barke cost is shit for a diesel truck owner compared to other costs.

Exhaust brake will make you SLIDE IN HEAVY SNOW/ICE !! I've experienced it. Lightly pump the brakes and DONT USE THE EXHAUST BRAKE! Btw in rain/light snow it's totally fine

Maybe I heard you wrong but why would your brake shoes crumble and fly off when using an exhaust brake? The exhaust brake has nothing to do with the actual brakes. It uses back pressure to slow the truck down.... Saving the actual brakes. Smh

What do you think about using the exhaust brake when unloaded. My 2013 6.7 all stock with gear and driver is over 8,000 lb. I like using all the exhaust brake all the time. Any concerns?

Had a 2013 6.7 for 2 years. Exhaust brake was on automatic 95% of the time I owned it with a 5600 lbs camper in the bed as well the whole time. No issues right up until I traded in for a 2019

I don’t tow anything with my truck, it’s just got a large KUV body on the back, so I don’t know that it’s all that empty, but I use it anytime I’d downshift to slow down in a gasoline powered car or truck.

I’ve heard it causes DPF problems

I think it does when I’m running empty simply because I find myself slowing down unnecessarily when I could just be coasting. Loaded I don’t think it makes a difference but I never really tested it?

That's when you want to leave it in auto setting. Because it wouldn't brake for u unless your on the brakes or accelerating from the moment you released the brakes or accelerator
