2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee | CarGurus Test Drive Review

You can buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee almost any way you’d like, from a 2-wheel-drive soft-roader to a 707-horsepower track star. But with prices that range from close to $30,000 to over $100,000, which version of the Grand Cherokee provides the best value?
Shop for the new 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee on CarGurus: cargur.us/tMlYb
Jeep has built a reputation for off-road-capable vehicles, and the 2019 Grand Cherokee is no exception. While trims like the SRT and Trackhawk are decidedly focused on on-road performance, other trims, from the base Laredo to the off-road specialist Trailhawk are designed to deliver the goods on and off the tarmac. Most Grand Cherokees employ a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 295 horsepower, although a V8 is optional (and another pair of V8s come exclusively in the high-performance variants).
Despite its impressive exterior styling, the Grand Cherokee is a little light on cargo space, with 36.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 68.3 cubes with that seat folded. It’s well-shaped but less than what you’ll find in other 2-row SUVs.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto joins a feast of other capabilities on the optional upgraded Uconnect infotainment system. The voice-recognition system works well and you’ll be able to pair your iPhone via Bluetooth with little difficulty.
Unfortunately, the Grand Cherokee is hardly a fuel-efficient vehicle, with an EPA rating of 21 miles per gallon in combined driving for the most fuel-efficient engine (the V6). Nor is it particularly safe, when compared with other competitors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it a Marginal rating for small overlap frontal-impact protection for the driver, and an even worse Poor rating for small overlap frontal-impact protection for the front passenger.

It is a big heavy SUV. I had a accident with a Jag XE at a stop sign head on. I had 3000 worth of damage, XE was totaled. Point being, the weight actually helps Grand Cherokee in accidents contrary to some of these small overlap claims. It is a superb vehicle filling a niche that now Passport, and soon a version of ATLAS have figured is under served, except Grand Cherokee is still better in off road and is rear wheel drive. As for mechanical issues, its been on market since 2011, engine and transmission are bullet proof, and most other minor issues been figured out. There is a reason Grand Cherokee just had its best sales month ever. This is the perfect vehicle and was so far ahead of its time, that it is still fresh and ahead of its segment.

Coincidentally, my colleague has a Jag that was struck from behind by an elderly lady in a Mercedes "tank" last week. His Jag was totaled while her MB emerged relatively unfazed. (I suspect the MB also had at least $3000 worth of damage. It doesn't take much of a collision to total $3K in repair bills.) Both my friend and the lady emerged unhurt. But that's not really the point. Of course the "weight helps the Grand Cherokee in accidents." That's why IIHS and NHTSA evaluate vehicles of the same type and weight relative to one another, not across categories. The average curb weight of a Jaguar XE is about 3500 lbs. A JGC weighs an average about 1200 lbs more. Depending on the type collision it's not surprising that a JGC will sustain less overall damage than a Jag, especially in low speed accidents. But the relative damage to vehicles is not the purpose of crash tests, either. It's the damage to occupants of vehicles. A vehicle that is totaled in a "small overlap" test can still get a positive rating in a crash test if the passenger compartment is not breached . The JGC apparently does not do as good a job of protecting occupants as other comparable SUV's regardless of damage to the vehicle, itself. In the case of the JGC its problems were in the small overlap tests (driver and passenger) and especially pronounced in passenger side small overlap tests where the JGC received a poor rating According to IIHS... "The dummy’s head loaded the frontal airbag, which stayed in front of the dummy until rebound. However, the side curtain airbag did not deploy and the front passenger door opened during the crash, which shouldn't happen because the passenger could be partly or completely ejected from the vehicle. In fact during rebound, the dummy's head moved outside the vehicle, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with side structure and outside objects."

I have mine for almost four years. Mine has run flawlessly. So far, no issues. And there is no glare in the driver’s eyes from any shiny surfaces in the cabin. That’s silly nonsense. I would buy it again without hesitation. But, true about the gas mileage. I get about 19 combined. But this is a really nice vehicle.

That's undoubtedly true but it's not really the point in this review. Off-road deaths and injuries are rare, in large part because speeds are so slow and crashes easier to avoid.

Been owning a JGC Sterling 2018 since March 2018 and after driving 46,000Km I would suggest by the extended 5 year bumper to bumper and you are set for whatever road may throw at you. I did cross canada/USA and with adaptive cruise and comfort - 5000km in 7 days seemed like a piece of cake, the worst snowstorm Ottawa got 2018/2019 with over 100CM of snow in jan - the snow mode turned on turns this SUV into a gliding machine on the highway. I pushed its tech to 140km/hr in snowfall on highways and everything responded as stated. added Bridgestone blizzaks in snow and it connect like a magnet to the road. If fuel efficiency is a concern one should get a small hatch or something, I get 12-15 litres per 100 km city and hwy mix. I have yet to meet a human who sits in the Jeep GC with pan-roof and comfort it provides and say its boring and I drove with it with all areas of my vehicle loaded and full of stuff when I moved from vancouver to ottawa - the more weight you put in it the better this beast drives...make sure you negotiate the price as there are great offers on these bad boys. #JEEPLIFE

(I fill up this huge tank on the way home Friday’s, get the ~21.4 over the weekend, and by next Friday, I’m at ~ 23.8. 3.6L gas, it moves, and the weight let’s momentum work for you! What is interesting is I was worried about the safety rating and found out that they upgraded the 2019 model. On the IIHS site the 2019 Grand Cherokee has been rated a good rating in small offset on both driver and passenger sides. A pillar changes and door hinge changes apparently resolved the issue in past models. So just to be fair, while this was an issue in the past, it looks like 2019s have been updated.

Pretty devastating review, Chris. I find the SUV "tweener" size (188"-191") of the Grand Cherokee very appealing. It's not often recognized as a separate segment but it includes a number of popular vehicles (Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Edge, Kia Sorento, Honda Passport, Nissan Murano, and Subaru Outback, among others.) I've never focused much on crash worthiness in assessing those vehicles because I've assumed that once SUV manufacturers largely resolved the rollover issues that afflicted an earlier generation such vehicles they were more or less equal in crash safety. Obviously, I was wrong. It's a shame considering that the Grand Cherokee stands near the top of the category in terms of off-road capabilities. Of course, none of the "tweener" SUV's is likely to be used for more than getting to a campsite on a well maintained trail but for serious off-roading the JGC stands out. But those benefits are seriously eroded if getting to a campsite involves a significantly greater risk of injury or death.

I'll call bull shit on your reason not to buy the GC. I was rear ended at 60 mph by a 17 year old girl driving a Tahoe. My car was standing still, waiting to turn into my driveway. The accident totaled the car, but I only suffered bad bone bruises on my calves, and that's it. If I was in a smaller car, or another car, I think I would have suffered greater injuries. While I appreciate the Crash Tests, physics and my personal experience don't lie.

Do you have any data that shows the GC has more injury and death rates from crashes? Also I would note that the IIHS has revised the testing SEVERAL times since the 2011 release of the WK2 GC. There are newer models with below par test results as well, and very few are Top Safety Picks. The GC is pretty heavy for a two-row vehicle, with most being in the 5k pound range. A lot of that weight is the result of the rigidity of the structure.

I own a 2014 ecodiesel jeep. I disagree with almost every negative thing you said. My ecodiesel (tuned) gets 31mpg all the time going up and down Oregon's section of i5. It's supremely comfortable with the air suspension. I tow various trailers nearly every week ranging from 1500lbs to 6000lbs. I can tow up to 7200lbs and the Jeep feels like it's capable of my more no matter how much weight I put back there. Also, it's got 140,000mi and has received nothing but regular fluid changes. The only negative thing I'll say is the programming for the 8 speed trans is horrible. It lunges during stop and go traffic due to starting in first. Basically, the diesel has so much torque, it needs to start in second when not towing, otherwise the creeping in stop and go is just aweful. Also, from the factory, they have the 8 speed downshift to 7th when you go up a 0.2% incline (not really, but it feels like it) which is completely unnecessary. The engine tune from gde has the programming attempting to have the engine lug using the power of the diesel, and it does help. I'm planning on getting their trans tune soon because after the ecodiesel emissions tune, FCA had all but ruined my drivability (trans shifting) and mpg. With that said, this is still my favorite, most capable towing and off roading, most comfortable utility vehicle I've ever owned. I've owned 2 durangos, one cherokee, one subaru wagon, another grand cherokee, and ultimately my 2014 ecodiesel. Don't let this guy fool you with his boring review. This is a fantastic vehicle.

Slight drawback for the five passenger and decent cargo capacity. Five passengers especially a family with smaller children can load up a cargo really quick. I came from a Three row Explorer but then again it’s just for me and the dog. If I had a major road trip with others I would probably rent a Yukon. 2020 HA 4X4 V6.......if you ever hear the folklore about a legend of a Jeep owner driving 125 miles from their home and passed up approximately 12 dealers in their home area just because the owner Did NOT want a HEMI......that was me!

Nobody cares about the crash ratings, dude. That's not a reason to not recommend the vehicle. Auto journalists make a big deal out of it, but realistically this car is so much safer than anything on the road even 5-10 years ago, and I've never heard of a single person IRL who chooses one car over another based on safety alone.

  • @weakbruteforce

Surprised you'd say that! I think most people with families are concerned about safety. The problem is that safety and crash test results are taken for granted because the technology in build quality and accident avoidence is so prevelant today, most vehicles test better than they did in the past. Jeep Grand Cherokee has been one of the few exceptions for years. Well, I guess that just proves your point...🤦🏾‍♂️ Moving on....⏩

You obviously haven't met my wife or tens of millions of other consumers who care a great deal about safety in an accident. In fact the most significant factor in the dominance of SUV's and the near extinction of minivans in the marketplace has been the shift toward SUV's among female consumers whose single highest priority in a vehicle is perceived "safety." Furthermore, I'd dispute your claim that "auto journalists make a big deal of it..." I keep up with a wide range of "auto journalists" and few bother to mention safety ratings except occasionally in passing. It's certainly true that vehicles are safer than they once were. But that doesn't mean that manufacturers (and consumers) should be satisfied with safety systems that passed muster a decade or more ago.

People do decide on safety ratings. Mostly people who don’t know cars or how they’re tested... or science. They don’t understand that the standards are extremely silly, subjective and arbitrary. They don’t actually know that some impacts that are tested are so rare that they pretty much only happen in labs.

This is the second Review of that automobile I have watched this morning and neither of you mentioned the only other real issue with this car and that is the idiotic "Start/Stop" feature which is a royal pain in the ass. There is no way to turn that feature off permanently, so we are left with having to push that button within moments of starting your car every god damn time you start it. That feature was the stupidest idea they could have come up with as they fell prey to environmentalist BS. It is so annoying that the Jeep Grand Cherokee I just bought three months ago, I am seriously thinking of getting rid of it.
