6:57, "hello fellow biker".. LOLI thought I was the only person that said that. Great video, strongly considering the AT adventure this spring. Bought a 2016 CTX a few years ago to try out the DCT, fell in love with it. My next bike will definitely have DCT. Thanks for the great review. Cheers

You seem comfortable while at stop lights. You seem to easily have at least one foot, firmly planted. Really looks like both feet are close to being planted, but at 5-9? nice review!

I would say I enjoyed the sport mode most. Did not mess with the levels, just what Honda says sport mode should be from the factory. Snappy throttle, holds the shifts much closer to redline.

Forgive my completely ignorance, but can someone explain to me why this one has a chain? I have heard negative comments about chains and in my mind I definitely can't imagine the most bulletproof engine without a cardan or even a belt, searching for that low maintenance and just focusing on riding to hell and back without thinking in the constant maintenance that the chain requires! I just did in the past months a lot of search of the 3 transmissions, positive and negative things, the chain is the one that doesn't loose power between the other 2, while the belt loose a little bit, and cardan shaft loose a way too much power, but in my case, I wasn't trying to find the most powered thing, I don't mind at all the lack of power as long as I had the most comfortable, reliable and careless transmission. In this big engines definitely that "lack" of power between shafts I think it is simply a quirk of perception. We have enough power in a vespa to kill ourselves so in a big engine this wouldn't mind me at all. I agree that if a belt or the cardan fail in a desert or somewhere far away from civilization, you definitely will cry, while a chain is more simple to take care of it. I heard someone saying we need to oil/lubricate and tighten EVERYTIME we ride, that scared me a lot, imagine we need to do that everytime we go out even if we go for a coffe or the mall, damn that would be annoying for me. Needless to say I'm not a mechanic and definitely will not try to put my hands on what I don't understand, I don't want to spoil it haha! But if I have a simple chain I wouldn't mind to study and know what to do if something happend... Having said that, in my mind I thought the cardan was the best careless option and the most strong one, the loss of power it isn't an issue for me definitely, but if someone tell me that the chain is way better and more careless than I think, definitely it will open my mind for new options and I'll start to consider more options like the Africa Twin and this V-Strom! I just noticed that chain is way more in sportbikes and motorcycles that want that power and performance, while the cardan or belt is more in bikes that are meant to eat kms (or that's what guides say) Too many positive as negative comments and I just don't know $%@ to do... Again, I talk from my ignorance, I'm not an expert, I'm just someone with doubts and hopping someone can help me to clear my mind and put me in the correct path to not regret my next motorcycle. I'm aiming to a super tenere 1200, I liked the africa twin dct but rejected all options just because they use chain. Am I wrong and lost? I'm just trying to find an unkillable machine that can go to hell and back without taking care too much of it... Comments? Recommendations? Ride free yall people Amazing video Sarah!

Thanks for watching and commenting! Here's my take on your question, and mind you it is just my take: 1. The Africa Twin's model code is CRF1000/CRF1100 putting it in the dirt bike / dual sport family, which all use the chain final drive. 2. You touched on it in your comment, but a chain can be replaced and serviced in the wild, so if you were to experience a failure miles away from civilization, and you carried an extra chain and master link with you, you could repair it in the field. 3. A shaft final drive typically requires 1 or 2 90 degree turns in the driveline (once between the output shaft and the drive shaft, and again between the drive shaft and the rear wheel) resulting in a 10-30% power loss, where as the chain is more efficient at moving power between the motor and the back wheel 4. And this is the big one in my opinion, the 1000/1100 platform was intended to be used in multiple applications (like the Rebel 1100) and as such, the chain final drive is easier to adapt to different frames, as opposed to a shaft drive. I agree that most touring bikes (Yamaha Tenere 1200, BMW GS, etc) have the shaft (cardan) final drive which is more reliable and doesn't have to be serviced, but the ones that offer more true off road performance (like the Africa Twin, Tenere 700, KLR650, V-Strom) have the chain final drive for the serviceable aspect, the ability to change gear ratio via sprockets, and maintaining more power to the back wheel.

@@TEAMPOWERSPORTS First of all I want to say that I'm really impressed by how detailed your text was. After months of info searching, I couldn't find concrete info about it, or at least simplified... The way you explain, it was just a pleasure to read, you made a complicated topic look easy and I'm really really grateful with your time and reply, I appreciate it a lot, not many people take the time to help others, and they are not meant to... I don't see gender, male/female, I see the soul, and you have a beautiful one, the proof is here and in your videos, I enjoyed this one and the super tenere. Thanks to all the team that makes it possible Having said that, you gave me another perspective of the situation, also would love to know if the term "more off-road" on the Africa Twin, means that wouldn't be "good" in daily ride on city or highway long road trips. What I love about the Africa is the DCT, that thing is pure fun, I'm not an often off-road rider, what I'm searching is a multipurpose big bike, daily city ride, if a long trip appears then going too, and if some off-road experience appear (not so intense just some dirt roads with big holes etc) then also take that path without fear, I wouldn't do dirt bike job or Dakar Rally thing, I know you're understanding what I'm trying to say... So having said that, the Africa Twin could be my best option? or with all your experience would you recommend me something else?

I'm always happy to help whenever I can! Typically I try to keep my responses brief, only answering the specific question, but in this circumstance, it required further expansion on the subject for fully address the nature of the question. What I meant by "more off-road" is that the Africa Twin is a more capable machine in the dirt than other adventure touring bikes (due to the lighter weight, more ground clearance, longer suspension travel) That all being said, if you like the Honda because of the DCT, then you should buy the Honda. Especially if the only drawback is the chain final drive. For regular street use, all you'll really need to do to maintain your chain between services, is make sure that is is clean, and lubricated. (typically every 1000-2000 miles depending on the riding conditions you're experiencing regularly) A friend of mine has an Africa Twin Adventure Sport model, that has 30,000 miles on it, and 90% of that riding is on the street, no issues, no complaints. Just make sure to change the tires (once the stock ones wear out) to tires that fit your application the best. The other cool thing about the DCT is that when you are ready to take it off road, the DCT will make dirt riding even easier, because in technical situations, like hill climbing, river crossing, or rock crawling, the DCT won't require clutch/throttle feathering, and won't stall!@@MirdenLayra

@@TEAMPOWERSPORTS and I will not forget your effort and time for helping me, you could have given me a shorter answer or even not having responded, but you decided to help me in the best way you could, trust me, it was really helpful for me and I appreciate it a lot. This little actions are the ones that have big impact on people who knows how to value. -Also sorry if my english is bad or misspelled, it isn't my native language I'll definitely keep all your words in mind, you not only helped me with my doubts, also giving me advices that no one has given to me. It was hard for me all this months trying to find someone who could clear my head, someone who was actually on the battlefield and could give me some words to avoid the problems that he already had to go through, also some tips and stuff, and I found it all here in your channel! Enjoying your great videos too, it was the help that I was praying for... I'll take a look to the Africa Twin... do you know if the rims can be made thicker? or it's a big big problem to upgrade a tire in that way? I think they are very thin and that doesn't give me confidence in stability, or what you would recommend? I'm wrong and the skinny tire is actually solid? I know it's meant to be for off-roading, but like I mention before, I'll not focus on that so I was thinking a wider tire would be better... thoughts? I also was taking a look to some Harley Davidson's like the Fat boy, (all for the fear of the chain), but Harley's definitely could be hard to take them to some dirty roads, I thought they could be that "all around" motorcycle, but who am I trying to fool? if I leave my ego of looking bad ass and all that stuff that humans do and like, I'll could definitely have a great experience in a motorcycle that is really capable of anything, daily city drive, long trips, and off road, that's why I was searching for this Africa twins and the Super Tenere, but like you mention, if the only drawback is the chain final drive, you suggested to buy the Africa for the DCT, and I have 100% confidence in everything you are saying. Your words were the perspective I needed, thanks again, I couldn't be more grateful for all of this.
