In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

    Joseph's greatest weakness: Level 3.

  • @Aericane
    @Aericane4 жыл бұрын

    Joseph lost to a glitch. Off course it's also because he played very risky, but he would have survived if not for the following glitch: At 27:21 he puts 2 I pieces on top of each other, which means there should be 8 white blocks on top of each other. At 27:27 he clears a line, but there are only 7 white blocks. The other block is still stuck 1 row above the visible area, where it was before. So at 28:04 when he hypertaps the I piece to the left, the white block form before is still there and blocks the new I piece from going all the way left. This actually happens 3 times and explains 3 of the 4 misdrops starting from 27:55!

    This is true! The lost tile above the play area is never cleared. That explains both of the misdrops which couldn't get into the left column. RIP It makes total sense actually, two J pieces he wanted to place upside down, both were sent all the way to the side before he confidently pressed down, but hadn't reached the left edge because they need to drop 1. This is 27:54 and 28:02, and he reacts both times because he is sure he tapped enough times. There was a J he placed long side down (27:45) , which he did make the adjustment for but only after it dropped a row. And the long piece was legitimately impossible to place properly with the blocked tile. Ugh what a glitch. Also re "he should lose when he put 2nd I on" - there is an explicit loss condition in NES tetris, where the new piece cannot spawn. It is not a loss condition to place things too high in the play field, but off center. It is just handled poorly internally and led to this loss. There is another point in an earlier round where someone does this too (D Lo at 2:23), but it doesn't bite them because they aren't playing top-row like joseph.

After this I practiced a couple of months to get back up to speed and now hypertap almost everything (didn't do it at all here!), increased my PB 100K+. I'll be stronger next time~! BOOM!

    Format idea for this next year: Have the 4 fastest non-winning times receive a wild card berth in the next round. Seeding would go: 1-4: fastest to slowest winners 5-8: fastest to slowest wild cards Then you can add a second round. Match 1 of round 2 would be seeds 1,4,5,8 and match 2 would be seeds 2,3,6,7. Then for the final you could either take the top 2 of each round 2 match or just the winners of each round 2 match and move them to the final.

    27:43 Screwing up that T-piece would never happen in a standard match, the slow nature of a speedrun match must be a new thing for him (even though he won a previous one.)
