--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The process of replacing the cam belt and water pump on a 2019 Audi A3 fitted with the EA288 1.6 TDI engine, badged in this instance as TDI 35.
This is my cousins car which he bought recently but was weary about it needing a timing belt and asked me to change it.
I ordered a set of locking tools on ebay for £20 and ebay also had service manual CD's which were quite useful to point out the important torque specs and the fact that audi state diagnostic equipment should be used to bleed the fuel filer and coolant system.
As far as belt changes go, the need for the diagnostic equipment and the maze of pipes sitting above the upper timing belt cover are a small annoyance although once in there its a fairly easy engine to work on.
It is worth noting however these 1.6 and the 2.0 do have a wet belt that drives the oil pump. My local motor factors say they rarely sell them, and speaking to some local mechanics it is not something they do. My uncle changed the wet belt on his 2.0 Touran with 160,000 miles so the next timing belt for this A3 it will get that wet belt changed.
Although if anyone knows the official change interval it would be useful to know.
The wet belt itself is not an expensive part but it does require the sump to come off, and the cover behind the crankshaft pulley has an integrated crankshaft oil seal which then must be replaced. Thankfully these do not suffer from the typical wet belt notoriety that the ford ecoboost or PSA puretech engines do.
For the diagnostic work in this video i used the Kingbolen Ediag Plus which is available from this link:
