No one, and I mean NO ONE who buys the AT4 expects it to be a Raptor analog from GM. It is only for preference on how it looks. And it looks great. I get really tired of all the fan-boys trying to shout down the products that aren't from their particular favorite. Shut up already. The truth of the current crop of trucks on the market today is that they ALL have something to offer. They are ALL pretty damn good. I just bought a new truck. In the process, I drove Ford, GMC, Nissan, Chevy and Toyota. Simply put, they are all really impressive. In the end, the buyer needs to determine what is most important to meet their needs and buy the appropriate truck. I honestly don't think you can go wrong.

Thanks, great review Alex! Two things I wish they would add. The first would be a larger fuel tank option for all Sierras. The second would be adding the Denali "Adaptive Ride Control" as an option to the AT4. I see they are adding the Adaptive Cruise Control as an option in 2020. Other than a little nicer leather inside, and perhaps a power tilt/tele steering wheel, I can't really think of anything else that I would want in an ideal truck. I believe the AT4 is by far the best looking 1500 trim level due to the toned down chrome on the front. The AT4 seems to be a great mix between luxury and off road that really isn't anywhere else in the market place. I believe this is new trim level is going to be a winner for GMC.

The Denali is blingly, but the AT4 is actually the best looking Sierra for me. It is purposeful & capable. I can live without the big 6.2L, but I kind of wished the new L84 5.3L DFM was mated with the 10spd instead of the 8spd - it would have worked wonders for fuel economy, but my guess is GM wants some overhead for the 6.2 & the MPG leader to be the 2.7T I4 in the lower-end trims.

Ram air suspension is garbage. A few people in Western Canada are seeing them fail because of the cold and ice/snow buildup on the compressor due to a very poor shielding design. My dad has had it go bad on it 7 times in 2 years and each time it had to get towed to the dealership. This last time is the final straw though and that truck is going out the door. I mentioned that it would be cheaper to replace the suspension as RAM offers that (I think due to complaints but at your cost!) but he is so mad he doesn't want to even drive it anymore. My Dad loved that truck. And now he is thinking of buying a GMC like mine....wow my Dad used to bleed Dodge . He has owned like 4 or 5 dodge vehicles over the past 10 years. A van/suv and a truck.....he must be really pissed and I don't blame him. He uses that truck for fishing in northern Manitoba and to tow a camper to go 5000 miles to see my brother in Whitehorse every summer and he needs it to be reliable. That's a tough drive once you get to northern Alberta and up.

I like the AT4 package over the Rebel. The Rebel can get up into the mid 60s and you can't get cooled seats or an auto 4wd setting at any price in that model! If I spend 65 grand on a truck it's insane not to have those features, especially with black leather seats.

The rear locker is nice, but at 60k that is only 10k away from a raptor and the same price as a power wagon. GM really doesnt have an all out offroad truck like Ford and Dodge.

Good reviews, just stumbled upon the channel. Many reviewers I fast forward as they ramble. Can't do that with Alex as he never breaths, just exhales lots of information that others leave out or gloss over. I like the AT4 as an option to the chromed Denali or the High Country. There is a highly optioned black and white one coming in with the intake/cat back options that I may have to look at. Found the Raptor to be a great option just lots of money and no discounts - just MSRP. Plus it is wide. But the interior is about perfect. The AT4 is probably great for the hills with tight winding roads and the Raptor more of a desert or outer banks vehicle.

Between the two sister trucks, the offroad version goes to the silverado custom trail boss. Neither the AT4 or the LT trail boss are worth it imo, too expensive for vehicles with the intent of offroading. There are only 2 sierra trims worth even looking at, otherwise you get a better deal with the silverado counterparts. The denali and the sle, and the sle is only worth it over a silverado LT if you just like the looks of the sierra over the silverado, as function and accessory wise they are identical at those trims (same tailgate same layouts same engine options ect) But either way the gm engineers missed the whole point of luxury trucks. People buying longhorns and limited rams aren't using them for hauling construction supplies or yard supplies. People buying those trims are hauling families, travel trailers and/or horse trailers. Durability is also not a concern because the target buyers will be treating it like a luxury vehicle, not a workhorse. So while that excuse works in the mid tier trims where trucks will still be regularly used for work, just being more comfortable and convenient while doing so, will not work in the luxury division.

Excellent video. I really appreciate how in depth you went in explaining everything. One thing that irritates and utterly perplexed me (not about you, but about GMC) is that my 2003 Sierra (5.3) gets about an average of 15 MPG and you’re stating that the new one would get about 19? Mine is a 4x4. So I’d imagine their number for a new 4x4 would be closer to 17...I just don’t get it. I really don’t. All that complicated engine management stuff is much more expensive than a little more gasoline...and we all know it will fail at some point. Gasoline is cheap- mechanical work is not. GM isn’t exactly known for making reliable electronics...As someone who uses these trucks daily all I see is them getting more and more uselessly over-engineered so that we have to spend more money fixing them when they inevitably break. From my perspective, it’s annoying. Thank you for your excellent video.

Ok. So if your going to review this truck as an off road truck than at least review it and test it with the right equipment. 18 inch rims with the wrangler tires. As a matter of fact they tell you the 20 inch rims are not recommended for off road.

If you disable traction/stability control does it actually stay off? In most new trucks I've driven it does not. Not sure why reviewers are skipping over this topic.Tire and suspension setups are seen but the safety electronics that override throttle and tire slippage also decrease off road capabilities. The Raptor and ZR-2 are the only trucks that I am aware of where one can disable the electronics and they stay off.

And that alone is why its not the ultimate offroad vehicle. I, and likely most others, are not going to risk denting and scratching up a $60K vehicle, so a beater is likely to make a much better offroad truck for the same reason that some cheap old boots are going to make better footwear out in the mud and kicking rocks than some $500 yeezees.

Gm is marketing the in between. The raptor is a great off road truck, but it wont haul 10,000 lbs. The AT4 will haul over 16, 000 lbs but you can also take it off road and it will do a damn good job at both.

Agree. I've owned GM vehicles, including GMC and Chevy. Nice wiz bang for about 3 years, if you're lucky. After that (expertly timed with the bumper to bumper warranty) and you are SOL. For that kind of money GM would have to have a longer history of protracted reliability.

@@markf8256 The 2014+ trucks with AFM have been reliable. Look at it this way. There are over 5 million Gen V GM small-block V8's and V6's with AFM on the road today. If there was a reliability problem, we would know about it. This DFM system is just an extension of AFM.

  • @markf8256

@hochhaul I was not really commenting on DFM specifically, but on the reliability of GM electronics, switches, etc. I've just been let down too many times over the years and gave up on GM after 24 years of different vehicles, and our last vehicle, a 2007 Pontiac G6 GT sedan. They just weren't worth the oh so many trips to the dealership when under warranty, and after the warranty, to justify spending my hard earned money on them again. I realize many others may have had better experiences. I just couldn't justify it anymore.
