2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL Premium - Redline: Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Super sized for the American buyers, the long awaited replacement for the first Tiguan grows in every dimension with an overall length increase by nearly 11 inches. This new larger size results in small 3rd row seat option and nearly 58% more cargo room versus the first generation. Combine with an interior that is easily the quietest and roomiest in the segment and Volkswagen may very well have a huge hit with the potential to become the brand's best-seller in this crossover hungry US market.

I purchased a 2019 Tiguan on April 9th and I’m exceedingly satisfied. I test drove all the competition over 3 months, CR-V, Rav-4, and so on. The Tiguan is not the fastest but is refined and smooth and has the emergency 3rd row for my little nieces & nephews. The infotainment is great! Rear air vents and 2 usb cables and sliding and reclining second row is great. It’s spacious, and I only wish I had cooled seats, and an adjustable front center armrest and lockable glove box. But there is no perfect vehicle. I didn’t want the CVT in the Honda and I like that both front seats are height adjustable in the Tiguan. It feels as if I spent $10k more than I did. Discounts were generous, and the new 6 year/ 72k warranty gives an added perception of mechanical security from VW. It’s my first turbo and I hope it lasts 3-4 years without issue or event. I can definitely recommend the Tiguan if you are in the stage of life that you need comfort & utility and 3rd row in a compact light truck. I bought Titanium Gray exterior color.

Thank you for this thorough review. I just purchased my SEL a few weeks ago and so far I am pleased it. However, I had a 2007 Subaru Legacy and can tell a major difference with the steering. I know, different car and models. What I do like so far is the easability of getting in and out especially if you have mobility limitations. Also, the sheer roominess of the cabin makes it enjoyable to drive. The infotainment screen is very intuitivae and does take some time to get adjuseted too. The amount of tech in the SUV is amazing but not overwhelming.

Awesome review as usual. Just picked up my Tiguan SEL (2row, 4motion) a few days ago. I love the car. Although I prefer the feel of real leather, the styling, tech, roominess and other features are very nice and it feels like a more expensive ride. It definitely feels more luxurious than the CR-V (which cannot be shifted manually) and clearly better than the flimsy “storm-trooper” Rav-4 (which feels like a glorified corolla with all that road noise and weird interior and no Apple Car-Play). Granted; the SEL is definitely underpowered. Even my learner’s permit 16 year old daughter noticed that. I just keep it in sport mode and shift manually, which hurts MPG, but problem solved = Good acceleration and passing power. Furthermore, IMO: in everyday driving, the ability to pass other vehicles when necessary has much more to do with driver skill, timing and awareness than the horsepower.

Great review. Fair on praise and criticism. The primary drivers for me were 1)size, 2) Driver Assist Features. My wife wanted leather. We have a teen who will be sharing the car with us for two years. After that we'll either give it to him or keep it. The size is perfect for going either way. Not too big for him and not too small for us to keep. I'm 6'-2" and 240-lb, son is 6'-1" and growing and he plays VB. This car will be very comfortable for 4 large people. The "boxiness" = plenty of headspace to the exterior. Spacious, very comfortable, excellent visibility. Perfect for road trips and sightseeing. It could use more power, but I'm fine with a teenager not having huge reserves of power. The SEL Premium has a full suite of convenience features. It's a fun to drive in, if not thrilling to drive. I'm really liking it (after a full week with it).

I just got my 2018 SEL 2 weeks ago and I love it. Sure, it's a little underpowered, but I keep it in sport-mode and I manually shift. OK, it drops my mpg, but...guess what? #problem solved! I have all the passing power I need. IMO- during normal driving conditions, passing ability has more to do with driver awareness, timing and skill, than it does horsepower. Anyway... I chose the VW Tiguan SEL over the CR-V because of VW's classic styling, its quietness, the roominess, the interior and exterior tech and the fact that I can shift gears manually. In 3 words: FUN. TO. DRIVE. The CR-V has an enormous gear shifter (cumbersome). The CR-V has no paddles or shiftable stick (BORING). Plus, CR-Vs are EVERYWHERE (a-dime-a-dozen). And, I don't like the vertical tail lights. The Rav-4 looks like a Storm Trooper: especially the white one. It looks "tacky" and way too trendy. I felt like I was in a flimsy vehicle. The interior styling was wacky and odious. Even the gear shifter looked and felt cheap. Plus, the Rav 4 had only ONE USB port in the entire vehicle #DEALBREAKER. And... No Apple Car play? I feel like I'm in a class above the others in my SEL. It get looks, I get compliments.

Sofyan, great review. Regarding the issue of having the 3rd row standard on a Front wheel driver vs optional on the 4 motion trim. My guess is that they did that for weight issues. Having the third row and the all wheel drive adds significant weight. As you pointed out, not sure why anyone would want the third row since it is unusable for all but small kids. My drive is a 2017 GMC Acadia Denali.

I test drove two of these today and both had jerky shifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. They were both SEL versions with 219 and 163 miles on the odometer (dealer lot cars). I also observed excessive vibrations in the cabin while the engine was warming up ( we were in P and there was a visible headrest shake, on both of them). The V6 Atlas was better, no vibrations or shady gear shifts. Did you experience anything similar?

Great review. I noticed that a lot of folks complain about the material or feel of the keyfob. I just recently purchased VW Atlas with same fob and I actually love it. It might not feel as premium as the other car brands but it is functional and practical. The plastic that it is made of will not scratch so easily like other brands so it will look new for much much longer. I had 2018 Q5 with 15k miles and keyfob looked like it came from a car that had 200k miles on it. I though I would share my point of view :)

So I went ahead and bought this car from VW in NJ, and don't regret 1 bit. I feel there is ample power to the vehicle and a superb torque built-up that can easily push 7 passengers if required. The only crib I have is a feeling that driver seat is slightly inclined to the left (it's just a weird feeling) ... Overall Tiguan >> Competition (CR-V, RAV4, CX-5, Equinox).

The turbo would turbonormalize, making the vehicle behave roughly around what a naturally aspirated 2.0L would at sea level. A turbo at sea level would turbocharge the engine, thus produce more power.

I love Volkswagen's new design language with their CUVs, but I think we should have got the short wheelbase Tiguan for multiple reason. It looks handsome, but the back doors look way too big; the short wheelbase Tiguan looks way better. Now, it's too big for the engine it has. Which brings me to an automotive pet peeve I have. I'm not sure if it's automakers or consumers, but why do people want compact vehicles that are spacious? It's called a compact sedan/crossover for a reason, because it's small. If you want something with more space, get a bigger vehicle. The Tiguan is bigger now, and for what? To jam a third row in the cargo area for your dog to sit in. Just a thought.

I consider that 0-60 to be much above average for what I've personally experienced in v6 / 4cyl turbos on that particular hill. Still bummed at the numbers overall though - was hoping it would introduce a decent tow capacity like the Ford Escape. If TDI was still around I'd be throwing money at it.

Neat review, Sofyan! The all-new 2018 VW Tiguan seems like a pretty drastic update over the previous model (in terms of technology, space, and looks). By VW adding 3-rows of seats as standard in the FWD models, and optional in the AWD models... The VW Tiguan should appeal to more consumers. Especially, slightly larger families that may not want (or need) to step up to a larger 3-row crossover or minivan. The pricing is a little on the high side, but the amount of technology/quality that the Tiguan offers seems to slot higher than a lot of its competitors. Also, that orange color of your tester really adds a youthful factor to the very conservative/sophisticated look of this vehicle. Overall, great review, Sofyan! Keep up the impeccable work! I cannot wait until I can get my hands on one of these vehicles to review. I am extremely curious as to how it will fare in my review tests! Go, Redline Reviews! 👍🏽

kermit1 The only difference with the U.S. and Euro-spec models is the fact that we’re only getting the longer-wheelbase version (Tiguan Allspace in Europe). We actually are getting the R-Line Tiguan in the U.S., so that’ll be nice. The only think I don’t like is that we aren’t offered the shorter-wheelbase Tiguan because I would personally buy that over the Allspace.

I have a few things to say regarding the review of this vehicle. But before I get into that I first want to say that I have subscribed to you for quite a while and largely I enjoy your reviews of vehicles that you provide. Granted as a reviewer in certain situations you are limited to accurately review a vehicle due to some restrictions. However largely your reviews are informative and enjoyable. That being said this specific review is extremely inaccurate and this review specifically was in my opinion a little bit negative and not biased for this vehicle. Let me explain. I leased this car 3 weeks after this review came out. And after driving it for over a month not only have I found the vehicle to have plenty of power I also Now understand why when you review the vehicle it felt underpowered. Many people don't know this but when you come to a dealership to test drive a vehicle, Volkswagen specifically, once they receive the vehicles at the dealerships the technicians and mechanics need to prepare this vehicle but in a very specific way. They need to program or more accurately unlock the programming to all the vehicles mechanical and technological features which are all disabled in transit on their way to the dealership. I tested a vehicle with everything disabled 2 days after I watch this review at a dealership to a vehicle that just arrived there two hours before I came. That vehicle still had covers on the tires and plastic on the paint and no technician had a chance to do anything to it. I found everything in your review to be identically accurate with my experience during that time. A day later I tested the same exact vehicle that a friend of mine purchased and we went for a drive in the city and out on the highway for about an hour and my experience blew me away. Not only was I able to find that the engine response and Power was significantly increased but I was also able to turn on sport mode by simply pulling down on the drive leaver. Once I put it in sport the entire vehicle completely changed. The suspension got stiffer, the engine response time to gear changes was faster and of course as usual the Rev count bumped up slightly higher. He gave me the opportunity to really open her up. Now me personally as a car enthusiast I prefer a car to be one thing and one thing only when I purchase it. If I buy a grant tourer I expected to have Superior power, incredible handling, stability and anything above that is just a luxury. If I get a 4 X4 I expect it to literally go maybe not anywhere but it should be able to go where most Vehicles wouldn't otherwise be able to go. I found it extremely refreshing and I also found it very useful that this particular car had something that most cars don't and that is; with a flick of a switch I can go from a very comfortable luxurious ride in a 4 x 4 with Incredible amounts of room and plenty of power and torque two pressing on one lever and suddenly sitting in a 4 X4 that drives in a relatively sportier fashion. And the change is literally instantly considering how many changes are made when you put it in sport. Only one car that I purchased had this Dynamic capability and that was the 2012 Acura MDX. And I want to be clear I did not find one accurate assessment as to your review compared to my vehicle. I had absolutely no lag issues in waiting for the engine to kick in for the transmission to switch gears and I also found plenty of power. Now granted in Colorado at that high of a sea level 8000' + that's to be expected the air is much thinner up there and the air entering the engine is creating that problem. But that's what you have to deal with when you live in those areas. The majority of society all live closer to the Sea at significantly lower levels 50 and 300 feet. I happen to live at approximately 70 feet of sea level and largely most of my travels Crossing 3 States in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut roughly share that range. Despite all the negative things mentioned in this review which I personally don't agree with because I now own the car and I am extremely satisfied with it for its price point, I have also considered purchasing its competitors and for its particular price-point, its competitors don't even come close to this Vehicles level of refinement, features, space and the Technology and Engineering behind it. As for some of your other reviewers making claims as to Volkswagens history of problems I literally have no clue what they are all talking about. Granted this is my first Volkswagen but over the last 10 to 15 years I have numerous friends that have them and numerous family members that have them and despite their one ridiculously notorious MPG scandal I have heard absolutely nothing negative from any of them and obviously I'm in contact with them and asking them as a car guy all sorts of questions all the time. Now I'd like to touch on another topic regarding this review. A lot of times you're reviewing vehicles and you go very much in depth showing us the exterior the interior the features and providing us with all sorts of information and one thing that I didn't see in this review was the interior experience that I and my passengers constantly talk about when they're driving in the back. After poking around in the large touch-screen settings of the vehicle you'll stumble into the ambient lighting settings which you can control. Around the roof line of the absolutely incredible panoramic sunroof which is larger than any other and it segments and is frankly truly astounding, there is a hidden LED strip that is part of the ambient lighting system. Another thing to know aside the one detail that you did provide where the seats recline back is the immense amount of legroom you receive. Two weekends ago a bunch of us guys went on a fishing trip in my vehicle and two of the biggest guys that were with us were over 6 ft tall and were able to fully straighten out their legs underneath the driver and passenger seats. They told me that they were extremely comfortable during our long trip. It's one thing to review a vehicle quickly when you're on a timer and the vehicles on loan but it's another to really experience the vehicle and give it an honest review. As for the ambient lighting it is very nice unique touch. As for as the LED color that was chosen for this vehicle which sadly is not changeable but is however LED and provides a very soft blue light and along with the floor lighting you get that LED strip in the panoramic sunroof which creates a very welcome almost Lounge like experience. Just set it to max. Another thing that you didn't mention to us was your experience with the audio system in the vehicle. I found that compared to its competitors in this price point you got twice of quality in terms of audio compared to its competitors. This particular vehicle at its price point is extremely refined as you said but it goes beyond that. In all intensive purposes owning this vehicle is a very luxurious experience in its segment for that price point. I for one am extremely satisfied with the vehicle. lastly I'd like to mention that the tester that you ended up driving being the front wheel drive may not really be an option to purchase a vehicle like this. I mean let's be honest as people who enjoy cars and understand their uses and it's markets if you're looking for a front-wheel drive vehicle that doesn't have all-wheel drive capabilities but you need space there are plenty of other alternatives to go to. But this particular vehicle in order to really experience all of its features and its driving Dynamics you want the 4 motion option. I really wish you would have test-drove or rather have gotten to test drive the SEL premium 4motion version. I still think regardless that your experience would have been subpar for the main reason that you are test driving it at 8000 feet above sea level but also that they are not fully programming and unlocking all of the features of the vehicle that a client would otherwise receive when purchasing meaning that these particular cars are left programmed in such a way where you can't fully experience them to all its Glory. Now that might be a mistake of the dealership you're working with or Volkswagens mistake perhaps, I don't know. All I know is my honest experience with this vehicle is exactly the opposite in virtually every negative point you mentioned and I highly advise you to test drive and SEL premium 4motion the next time you get back down to sea level at any dealership just so that you yourself can really get the feel of this vehicle and make sure you test a vehicle in normal mode and in sport mode. Eco mode, off road and snow are really unnecessary to test for this purpose but those two Dynamic changes on City roads and Highway will definitely or rather should definitely change your mind regarding this vehicle. Will also be surprised that you will have absolutely no problems with passing power on the highway as well. Purchasing a Volkswagen is in essence purchasing a German car and the way these cars drive are for drivers. Don't be afraid to throw it into manual when you need to pass someone and also remember that that click at the end of the gas pedal like in Land Rover vehicles has a very specific use and you need to understand its trigger and what it does when you go beyond the point of the gas pedal it where it clicks. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about. I agree it takes a little bit of a learning curve to understand how to drive a German car however as a car Enthusiast once you do learn how to drive a German car you won't want to drive anything else. Thank you again for all the great reviews that you have been doing, we all very much appreciate it and I highly advise anyone reading this to subscribe to this channel. Thank you for your time.

I'm trying to figure out why VW tried to do here. Yes the old Tiguan was more of a lifted hatch than an SUV and the size gain is great, but I felt like they made it a bit big for a compact SUV. Then there is the 3rd row seat which makes the Mitsubishi Outlander & Nissan Rogue look large in comparison; you have to be children or midgets to fit back there. Given VW is introducing the larger 7 seat Atlas at the same time, why do they insist on fitting the joke of a 3rd row in the trunk area? Lastly the powertrain; the old Tiguan with the EA827 2.0T with 200hp was spunky & noticeably sportier than the class norm such as Rav4, CR-V, Rogue and the CX-5 with their ~180hp 2.5L naturally aspirated I4. Why dumb down the powertrain to their levels in a car which like 90% likely heavier than the outgoing SMALLER Tiguan? The mainstream direction of VW is making it hard for a car enthusiast like me to appreciate VW is botching their lineup in North America.

Touareg is going to be gone by 2018 after the MY2017 are sold out. The Atlas and Touareg are too similar to sell together in America. Besides the Touareg while nice & luxurious never really clicked with Americans (and was too expensive to wear a VW badge) so that's why the larger Atlas was designed and the Touareg will likely be confined to Europe & Asia in the future.

Would really love it if they made the coming R-Line similar to the GLI, GTI, or even the Golf-R, performance wise. Add the sport suspension, the more powerful engine with the DSG and the sport flat bottom wheel. I don't know what they were thinking when they made it bigger and a lot sharper/sporty looking but skimped on the engine...

Volkswagen's engines tend to pair better with their sedans and hatchbacks. These 4 Cylinder Turbos really are fun when you stick them in a small car like the Jetta. I've got the 1.8t one in my Jetta and I think it's fair to say that it can hit 0-60 in under 7 seconds at a lower altitude.
