2018: The Year of the Libertarian Party?

Libertarians had high hopes last presidential race. The two candidates offered by the major parties were hated, so libertarians thought 2016 was their big chance.

It didn't turn out that way.
Still, Nicholas Sarwark, Chairman of the Libertarian Party (www.lp.org), says it was a great success. "We tripled all previous records, in the 45 year history of the Libertarian Party, we've never had that kind of support from the electorate."
Johnson only got 3.5% of the vote. John Stossel asks, "is that really winning?" "We're growing, and they're dying," answers Sarwark. "Voter registration identity with Republicans and Democrats is dropping. Voter registration identity with Libertarians is the only party that's growing."
The fight isn't easy. Republicans and Democrats try to keep Libertarians off the ballot. But Sarwark says the plan for this year's midterm elections is "to be on the ballot in all 50 states. We'll definitely be on the ballot in all 50 states in 2020."
Gary Johnson helped the Libertarian Party get on ballots. "But it's not about any particular candidate" says Sarwark. "That's the real difference between the Libertarian Party and, say, Ross Perot. When Ross Perot gets tired of running for office, there's nothing there anymore."
Stossel talks to Nicholas Sarwark about what we can learn from the last election, and what the future holds for libertarians and the Libertarian Party.

Sorry, this whole Libertarian thing starts with Barry Goldwater. "We see, in private property and in economy based upon and fostering private property, the one way to make government a durable ally of the whole man, rather than his determined enemy. We see in the sanctity of private property the only durable foundation for constitutional government in a free society. And beyond that, we see, in cherished diversity of ways, diversity of thoughts, of motives and accomplishments. We do not seek to lead anyone's life for him - we seek only to secure his rights and to guarantee him opportunity to strive, with government performing only those needed and constitutionally sanctioned tasks which cannot otherwise be performed. If I want to sell my car to someone, I'm not a fuckin business, I'm an individual selling something. If I'm selling my car, I OWN IT, I decide who I want to sell it to. Conservative leaning? The Ross Perot analogy is REAL! I'm like you I'm a Libertarian as well. The LAST thing I want to do is see a Democrat elected. Most votes "for" your party is actually a vote against your party canceling out the opposition. EXAMPLE: A) 51% B) 49% In this example, 100% of the people that voted for "B" actually was just voting to cancel "A's" votes. 98% of the people that voted for "A" were just voting to cancel "B's" votes. Only 2% of "A's" votes weren't cancelation votes. The problem is when you vote "for" a Libertarian you are also voting for a Democrat at the same time because of the mostly conservative views held by Libertarians, by NOT canceling a Democrat vote.

The party that had the most votes, their candidate would be president and the others, vice president. That way it's not a monopoly in D.C. and more perspectives and compromises are had.

Stossel I love you and I'm a young libertarian but I have to say that Gary Johnson was a clown and his policies we're off message from any libertarian ideas I've ever seen. I think libertarians have bipartisan pull because of classic American philosophy, and I think with that you can force the the old parties to confirm to the ideals. Also considering the amount of alt-righters in the comments who tell me they used to be libertarian I have to wonder how libertarian groups are failing to adequately convey the ideals, and I have to wonder how much of that is influenced by the libertarian party.

kmg501 I've got a 2 part response to that. First, Trump's first year was an outright success, aside from a few minor missteps Trump's policies are getting through and the intended effect is being observed. Media spin is where the idea of Trump failing comes from. Second, my contention is that those alt-right people either never fully understood or fully believed in libertarian ideals. Meaning that libertarians of the day are not conveying the ideas properly. I can't say for certain since I didn't read "Atlas Shrugged" (I became a libertarian after reading the "Second Treatise of Government") but something about those libertarians seems to put me at odds with them.

Gary Johnson was a good Governor of New Mexico but he was sick and dependent on marijuana during the presidential campaign. Worse the vice-presidential candidate was for gun control which is in opposition to the Libertarian Party platform.

It's a good thing that the Libertarian Party does not sell out to corporate interests like the two major parties, but let's be honest about Johnson. He is undoubtedly sincere and knowledgeable about domestic policy, but he doesn't know anything about foreign policy due to paying too much attention about what was going on in America and lack of curiosity about what is going on outside of America. This is the second time l've seen Stossel making excuses for him. He literally didn't know what Aleppo was, and he embarrassed himself for it.

I think you Libertarians are going about it all wrong. Conservatives and Libertarians want very similar things for our country and I'm Conservative. Libertarians need to run on and infiltrate the Republican party which would bring things back towards sanity in the Republican party, name for the party is just a name. Libertarians infiltrating the Democrat party would be just to WEIRD... Don't change your ideology's or your values just take them with you into the party that will have you, and by doing that you will have changed THAT party for the better! I hope I made sense.

why do potheads have to be lefttist? Most of the states legalizing right now are red states. My point is that I believe the whole point of the libertarian movement is freedom of choice and personal responsibility. If you are still with the illegalize all drugs camp then you are in the wrong party. My party is about the golden rule, Do unto others as they may do to too you. Other than that stay out a my bussiness!

  • @WarCriminalPhlox

Jesse Cosby Focusing so much on pot is just one part of the startegy the LP (and Gary Johnson in particular) of pandering to the left: bake the cake, saying how great of a leader Hillary is, calling people racists, etc. They were specifically trying to appeal to leftists, emphasizing the "socially liberal" aspect of libertarianism (thus bringing in leftists who are not pleased with the DNC). It's a smart move if you want to get more votes; not so much if you want to build a strong libertarian movement and achieve a free society, since a lot of the people Gary brought in do not have any respect for property rights, which is the crux of libertarianism.

  • @ogre27kain

    @ogre27kain

I think your still missing the point. All of this should be legal and not loaded with red tape. Property rights are huge, I completely agree but recognizing individual rights and liberties are key and promote the want for personal and property rights. What's the point in owning my own land where I can't choose what to grow there? I'm not disagreeing with you about our goal but being LP is left and right and to the extremes because the framework of our belief is solid around our personal responsibility even if that's smoking a blunt or making my own whiskey. I should have those rights. If I believe those things are wrong then that is up to me to influence those around me not the government.

Until most if not all of the states adopt Alternative Vote or Ranked Voting we are stuck with so called strategic voting which inherently devolves into a two party system which ultimately becomes a single party with two faces exactly like we have now. Maine has been the first state to move to a ranked voting system and it is critically important to push your state to do the same. We are stuck with a First Past The Post system which is a disaster for anyone who wants their government kept under control of the people and not special interest groups.

The Libertarian party wont have any chance of winning until we can specify 1st and 2nd choices for elections. Libertarians are more similar to conservatives than they are to liberals. Because of this, a vote for a libertarian is really just splitting the conservative vote and giving the liberals an advantage. As a paying party member myself, my opinion is, yes, ballot access and try to get into the debates, but also, focus remaining attention on the least partisan districts in Nebraska - one of only two states that are not winner-take-all, and the least partisan of those two. If the party can get a single elector in 2020, it will change the entire dynamic for 2024. Of course, we have to have a solid candidate too. I like Gary Johnson, but I can see why he came off as a goofball to a lot of people. We need a solid thinker, who is not too aspbergerery - someone like Mary Ruwart, maybe even someone exactly like Mary Rewart.

But then I started listening and I started wanting big government out of my life. I started wanting the country to be a meritocracy of the public sector. I think the libertarians have a ways to go, but I also think they're learning. The candidate needs polish to deal with the gotcha questions. The party needs its public face to be more than "hey we're the weed party"

Gary Johnson's final answer to, “What would you do, if you were elected, about Aleppo?” was not, “And what is Aleppo?” It was “Well, with regard to Syria, I do think that it’s a mess. I think that the only way that we deal with Syria is to join hands with Russia to diplomatically bring that at an end. But when we’ve aligned ourselves with - when we’ve supported the opposition of the Free Syrian Army - the Free Syrian Army is also coupled with the Islamists. And then the fact that we’re also supporting the Kurds and this is - it’s just - it’s just a mess. And that this is the result of regime change that we end up supporting. And, inevitably, these regime changes have led a less-safe world.” On September 9th, 2016, the day after the interview, Gary's idea was put in to policy as Russia and the United States agreed early Saturday on a joint effort to attack terrorist groups after a national cease-fire in Syria.
