    The final race each year was originally one full lap around the rink until 2008, when the event was revised. In 2016, Red Wings forward, Dylan Larkin broke the previous record set by Mike Gartner (13.386) with a time of 13.172, however he had a running start.

    Zarkon... Listen closely at the 1 min mark... Also that statement I put was taken from Wikipedia. So lets give McDavid the same start as Larkin and we will see once and for all. Either way it doesn't really matter cause skates technology will get better and someone will beat all the records. Its human nature and evolution in competition.

    Reminds me of the horse that finished 2nd behind Secretariat constantly... and not just finished 2nd, but finished hundreds of yards ahead of the rest of the horses. It was literally those two making the rest of the competition look stupid, but because he finished 2nd we never remember him. Would have won the Triple Crown had Secretariat not existed. The fact I can't recall his name is kind of telling...

  • @30AndHatingIt

    I think pride is worth more than money to athletes who are competitors like Eichel. Some athletes care more about money than getting their name on the Cup (see: Danny Briere leaving the first place team in the league and signing with the worst team in the league), but others care about more than that.

  • @Rowgue51

    @Rowgue51

    6 жыл бұрын

    The horse you're talking about was Sham, but you're not quite remembering it correctly. The first two legs of the triple crown were not ridiculously uncompetitive with just those two destroying the field. The field was relatively together in the fist two races with Secretariat just casually pulling away down the stretch. The last leg of the triple crown is the only one where those two were ridiculously far ahead of the rest of the field, and that was only because Sham's jockey went way too hard early because they didn't want to let Secretariat get a lead because they knew they couldn't run him down. But they severely underestimated Secretariat's stamina and Sham finished last in that race after fracturing his leg from being pushed too hard.

    So they haven't gotten any faster compared to 25 years ago, yet their skates sure have gotten a lot more expensive. In 1993, top of the line skates, such as CCM 652 VakuTacks, cost ~220 USD, which, according to the U.S. government's CPI inflation calculator, is ~$390 today. And back then, they used actual leather rather than cheap man-made materials from China. So why do top of the line skates cost ~$1,000 now? My guess is that it's because sneaker companies, i.e., Nike and Reebok, got their claws into Bauer and CCM in the mid 1990s, and sneaker companies pioneered the art of conning teens and twenty-somethings into spending $100+ for a $10 product (with a $3 actual manufacturing cost in some cheap-labor Asian country).
