    @@masonmorizio9195 the 5.3 is very reliable imo, my 6 speed trans does give me some weird early shifts and clunky shifts once in a blue moon! Its like it is hunting for the correct gear sometimes...but it was always like that since new! I had a 2011 sierra with the same trans and it didnt really do that so who knows?

    I leased my '18 Silverado 1500 LT with extended cab in September 2018 for 30 months at 270 a month and opted to buy it out when the lease ended at 7 years and 440 a month. I got 4000 bucks trade in on my 2004 Silverado LT 1500 with only 72000 miles on it at the time of trade in. The frame was junk. I've had this truck for 43 months so for and only 18000 miles on it. So far so good. My truck at the time of lease end was worth to the dealer 39000 bucks and my buyout with a 5 year warranty was 30000 bucks. The dealer flat out told me they hoped I'd turn it in because it was an ultra low mileage truck and they'd make a lot of money on it. They wanted it so bad they said they'd cut me a deal on a 2020 Silverado Custom with a crew cab but it was less of a truck with the less options so I declined. Hoping this truck will last me until it's paid off but living in Maine means rust so it's been undercoated and will get it yearly. I hope it's enough!

    I am at about 49k on my 2018 LT and neither of these are prevalent. From what I have read, the chevy shake on these trucks are caused by the shitty drive shafts, this is also why they are speed limited. At 90MPH the driveshaft can split in half, most shops wont dyno the truck with the stock driveshaft either.

    @@paulm749 no problem! The guy in the video says that disabling the AFM is a simple solution, but for it to work properly and not create carbon deposits you need to swap the lifters for non-AFM ones. As long as you keep up on the regularly scheduled maintenance of your engine, carbon deposits shouldn’t be too much of an issue as I believe a carbon cleaning is part of a service interval (any Chevy certified techs pls correct me if I’m wrong). For Mazda Skyactiv’s for example, at 35k miles a carbon cleaning is recommended by the manufacturer To do a good carbon cleaning without using solvents, a method I’ve heard of that works is to go to harbor freight and get a media blaster, an air compressor, and a vacuum with a hose and blast whatever has carbon deposits with ground up walnut shells as media then vacuum it up. Why walnuts? Non-corrosive, but abrasive enough and has a low combustion temperature and is too soft to damage the block but hard enough to chip off carbon deposits.

  • @paulm749

    @paulm749

    Жыл бұрын

    @@SailingFrolic I've read about replacing the lifters, but it seems I should also replace the cam with one appropriate for a non-AFM set-up, so it's a big job requiring not only major work on the top of the engine, but removal of most of the front end and the radiator as well. Besides the time and cost of the work, you are left with reduced fuel efficiency. I'm getting @ 22mpg year round now, but after the AFM deletion would likely see that drop down to 17 or 18 mpg. At that point, I should have just bought a Tundra and saved myself all this trouble. I just wish there was some way to make the AFM more reliable. Unfortunately, it seems to be a design that's inherently flawed and it's not a question of if it will break, but when.

    Saves your lifters too. Only downside Iv’e noticed is that it can trigger a engine light if you idle for a couple hours. Also it drains the battery when the truck is off. It can kill battery if not started in a week.

    @@grayrider1865 You are wrong. Testing has shown that the Range modules have a very small battery draw when the vehicle is off and in "sleep" mode. This is because it needs a monitor running to catch when the vehicle is started. This small draw is not enough to adversely affect battery life or drain the battery unless left in place for an extended period of time (i.e. more than a week or two). The device will go to a VERY low "sleep" state after the engine is off (within 3-10 seconds of the engine shutting off) In this state all the LEDs are OFF and it hibernates at about 1-3mA Every 7-25 seconds it will wake up to a "light sleep" state to check to see if the vehicle is running. In this mode, there will still be NO LEDS lit but current draw will spike for If the vehicle is NOT running (i.e. RPM < 500) then it'll go back to deep sleep. Rinse and repeat until the vehicle is running, at which time it'll fire up completely and you'll start seeing LEDs light again.

    Purchased my 2018 Silverado 1500 4x4 Z71. 5.3 engine with 6 speed trans. great truck until 124,000 km (77,000 miles) then the trouble started (Vehicle is super well maintained to the letter) Initial issue was turn key and no start battery full charged, diagnostics revealed issue with starter relay and was replaced no more starting issues. 2 days later Engine light comes on and engine starts chugging code says Cyl 5 misfire, and then Stabilitrack comes on, no more ABS or Cruise control Transmission downshifts very hard when coming to a stop made appointment at dealership for this , not a happy camper.

    That’s a really good deal in today’s market. Some food for thought… V8 full size trucks depreciate at a slower pace than almost any “fuel efficient” car or crossover. Fuel is only one component of total cost of ownership.

Luckily, I’m also looking at a 2020 F150 XL super crew with only 15k miles but it’s a 2.7 ecoboost the asking price on this one is 43k out the door. Would love your opinion.

    @@preshj0hnson We have a really good 2.7 ecoboost owner’s review on the channel… you should definitely watch that. It’s a really good engine (better than the 3.5 in many ways), but if you really want a V8, you won’t be happy. I honestly think the price they’re asking for that 5.3 Silverado is still a good deal, even with 40k miles. If the truck is otherwise clean, there isn’t much risk at that price.
