2018 Chevrolet Colorado Pickup Review / Comparison

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you're looking for a scaled-down Silverado, or you're just looking for a 1/4 ton pickup truck in a smaller wrapper, look no further than Chevy's 2018 Colorado or it's GMC twin, the 2018 GMC Canyon. The Colorado may not be as inexpensive as you'd hoped, but at the moment it is quite simply the most capable "small" truck in America. Whether you're looking for the best base work truck, the most capable small off-road truck or you're just interested in a good deal on a cargo hauler, this Chevy's probably for you.

You are one of my favorite car reviewers. You are very thorough. I love how you compare it to other trucks at the end. Someone who is looking to buy a vehicle should find your reviews very helpful. I think it would cut out alot of the leg work. Because if you are a tall person you know some of these vehicles are not even worth your time to go test drive.

Great review Alex... The Chevy Colorado really shines on the low end of the market.. My buddy's son just bought his first new truck, a 4 cyl gas colorado with basic options.. Still has the Appleplay, 4 doors, bed liner etc... Out the door for $25000.. Now that's a great deal.. decent gas milage, just slow...

Great video. Thank you so much! Don't *need* a truck but want one, and my choice is down the the Ridgeline and Colorado. Ridgeline is perfect for me features-wise - I'm the EXACT niche it's designed for, but I like the Colorado looks better and the fact that it's American. Close call. This video gave me exactly what I needed. Thanks so much for such a great source of information presented so well.

Appreciate all the detail. Recently I drive a Colorado V6 and the ZR2 with the diesel and was impressed with how well the ZR2 still felt in the road, considering the wheels/tires and different suspension. It was still fairly civilized when it needed to be. The V6 was peppy and plenty for most people. For everyday comfort and practicality...probably go with the Ridgeline, towing and fuel economy, go with the Colorado, for high resale and and most likely better build quality go with Tacoma. Makes me wonder if Toyota will upgrade aspects of the Tacoma TRD Pro now that Chevy has the ZR2 and Ford hopefully offers a Ranger Raptor. My 2 cents. Great review once again!

Another thorough review, Alex! A couple of corrections what you printed, not in what you said: There is no 2.0 liter engine in the Colorado, but a 2.5. And the 2.5 is not available in the ZR2.

Great review. I especially like the "scaled down Silverado" and "3/4 ton" analogy. It's funny that the Ridgeline Black Edition starts at $43,000, and the Colorado ZR2 starts at $41,000.

For me the choice was easy. I purchased a 2018 Colorado LT Crew Cab Long Bed V6 4x4. Nothing bad to say about the other brands. I just couldn't have got as much for the money as I did with the Colorado. A Taco with the same options I have would have cost me at least 5 Grand more. Plus I think the Colorado is a much better looking truck. Especially in the front. I know the Taco is better off Road but I plan on taking my Colorado off road almost never. The Ridgelines are even more expensive and they are not even a real truck. In love with my Colorado!

I've watched several, "extended" reviews of this truck and thought, " I'm kinda ambivalent about this". Then I watch Alex and think "now this is what I expected from a review!" Leave it to Alex to give me the dope on what's what! I now kinda want to take a look at the GMC version of the diesel 4X4 model. It just looks more traditional to me and that's what I want.

Again, so much hate for the Ridgeline in the comments. To me is very simple, I work hard for my money, when American manufacturers start building vehicles with quality and reliability I'll buy from them. Until then, I will continue to happily drive my Ridgeline, which right now will probably outlast most of the competition except maybe for the Tacoma.

On the lower end, you see a bigger percentage difference in asking prices for Silvy vs. Colo. I'm seeing V6/alloy wheel 2wd Colos with 23-24K asking price, while Silvy wants $30K for Reg Cab 2wd V8s with black bumpers and steel wheels. Like the data comparison there. This is comprehensive and detailed.

I am still very disappointed that I can't get the diesel in an extended cab model (WT or LT), except if you jump all the way up to the ZR2. Only fleet customers can order the extended cab Colorado in the WT trim level. If I knew of a dealer that could slip in a fleet order, I would jump at that.

Nice review,, however you did leave out the 4 by 4 Z71 Offroad 3.6 liter Extended Cab, and 4 by 4 Z71 Offroad 3.6 liter Crew Cab versions at 20:53 for pricing and specs. Those come with the towing package, and they have a automatic rear locking differential with tuned port shocks and springs. They also can come equipped with the BOSE sound system. The Z71 Offroad 4 by 4, 3.6 liter versions start at about $34,000 and go up to about $40,000 in pricing. I have the 2015, Z71 Offroad, Extended Cab, 3.6 liter. So far its been a good truck ( Knock on wood ). On the interstate, ( 25 MPG ) it gets great gas mileage, but in the city ( 15 to 16 MPG ) not as good. The 3.6 liter versions have the multi-port heads, 4 valves per cylinder and are the same engines Chevrolet uses in their V6 Camaro, and V6 Cadillac so they are a little on the quick side considering they weight 4300 and 4400 pounds.

Giving away 7mpg for a zr2 seems silly. On the 4’ wide bed, mfgrs could put rails in the bed sides, maybe 2” wide above the wheel wells and plywood could fit there. I need a narrower bed where I live because a lot of the roads in East Tenn are very narrow. I have a Sierra now but the narrower Colorado looks very attractive

I was looking at the Colorado, but ended up going with an F150 2.7 ecoboost. It cost the same as the Colorado I was looking at, but can tow more and has more interior room. I have been averaging 22.5 MPG with it too. I doubt I'd do any better than the I4 or V6 Colorado. I really don't see the draw of these midsize trucks. If they cost significantly less then maybe I can see buying them. But the prices I was seeing when shopping for Colorado's and Canyon's were almost as much as similarly equipped F150's and Silverado's. Tacoma's were expensive too. About the only advantage I see with these trucks is they might be slightly easier to park and may perform better off road.

Robert Williams I traded in my full size truck for a Colorado recently. I do a lot of urban commuting and parking for my job and the full size truck just want practical. Also my MPG was around 14, so by going the midsize route, I get 50% better efficiency while only losing 2 horsepower. I also didn’t lose much in the way of cargo capacity or towing capacity. So for ME, the midsize is just a better fit. Being able to park my truck in the front of a parking lot as opposed to rear is another perk!

Well, except for the bed being so shallow. The Chevy salesman, however, claimed he had never heard of a ZR2. WTF? So I didn't get to test drive that one. I’m just not sure for me I would like to have that smaller wrapper. I kinda like my big ole bumpy riding half ton truck. Plus I get 20mpg with about a 65/35 hwy/cty mix anyway.

Blake Swan seriously? You don’t think the Tacoma outsells all of the others? The rest is just my opinion and as I stated for my particular situation. It’s ok to disagree with my analysis but please elaborate.

My 2010 Colorado 2wd has a payload of 1500 pounds. I can't think of any actual pickup truck, ever, that has had a payload of only 500 pounds. It would be nice if the new Colorado wasn't falling into the bloated huge but somehow called "compact" truck segment that Toyota, Nissan, and undoubtedly Ford will fall into, what we really need in the US is an actual small truck. It's not a case of safety ratings, there are tiny cars that get good safety ratings. We're just being told what we will get as far as so called compact trucks, and we're just stuck.

I was thinking of getting the Diesel Canyon, for commuting and occasional light towing, but the new Ford Ranger makes more sense. It has 310 tq vs 369. I can live with a little less because it doesn't need Diesel fuel which is harder to find and costs 40 cents more per gallon here. It also doesn't cost 3-7 grand extra out the door.

Blake Swan I know what you mean. Market said they wanted deisel. They're all about torque. They have much less horsepower than gas engines. So the V6 isn't even an option in the ZR2?

I'd go for the Ford Ranger. Indeed my Ford Ranger [yes, I've got one] has just had its fourth birthday. Your version will probably be different in a few significant ways. Firstly your steering wheel will be on the wrong side. Secondly you will probably not be getting the 2.2 four cylinder diesel. Thirdly, and with a bit of luck, you may get the option of upgrading the six speed automatic to the 'new' ten speed in some higher spec versions. Its a good truck with the only drawback in Europe being the poor backup by Ford with parts supply. Ours are built in South Africa. There is a brand new design due by next year, but you will probably NOT be getting that model in North America if what I've heard is true. Not for a few years. We shall soon see.

Ridgeline all day long. Fits my family better, especially child car seats. Really appreciated that car seat video you did on it. I traded in my 2013 f150 v8. Loved it but too much gas, my wife was scared to park it, and didn't need towing. Ridgeline is easier to drive and actually feels faster than the f150.

It is all based on your needs and wants. Like you stated, it fits your child’s car seats better. My children are older, so I have no need for the child car seats. We go off-roading and I throw lumber and other things like cement and heavier things in the bed for home improvement projects. So the ZR2 works outstanding for me. The ridgeline didn’t fit my needs or desires. Also, it was plain ugly. But, what doesn’t work for one person, works for another. 🙂

Fuel mileage on the diesel POOR, I had a 1986 Isuzu Spacecab with 2.4L TurboDiesel, with MANUAL Overdrive transmission & got a documented 40 mpg on a long distance road trip of 3,600 miles, (ISUZU TurboDiesl was only offered 2 years, was not available for sale in California.) The diesel came from GERMANY, don't know heritage, it lasted until 2004, the death blow was a leaking oil cooler which was integral in the oil filter assembly, 2 dealers had the part on factory BACK ORDER for 6 months before I gave up.

30mpg highway is pretty respectable for a vehicle of this size and capability, especially considering it doesnt even have the 8-speed transmission.
