2018 BMW X3 | CarGurus Test Drive Review

Shop the new BMW X3: cargur.us/l3cyL
Fans didn’t originally like the idea of BMW building cars for use on dirt and in the woods, but the company now offers five X crossovers, and that number will soon grow to seven. Hardcore fans might find the latest BMWs a little softer and less communicative than the cars that preceded BMW’s “sport activity vehicles,” but the new X3 can still offer a performance driving experience-and the 2018 X3 will be the first BMW available with a factory-installed trailer hitch.
The 2018 X3 offers two engines, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque or a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with 355 hp and 369 lb-ft. Reviewer Cliff Atiyeh had plenty of fun with the four, and while he observed more body roll than he’d prefer in a performance car, he found the cabin quiet and comfortable. He also appreciated the iDrive system’s speed and logical control layout as well as the 360-degree camera system’s great views and parking assistance.

My thoughts exactly, the new X3 seems like a larger luxury SUV. Very nice indeed!

AWD should be standard in every SUV , I’m happy that bmw is making steps in the right direction , and the HUD is the best in market 👍🏻

This is one of the best quick reviews I really like how this guy talks and how they did the video. A couple of notes on the X3..adaptive suspension is a must otherwise the car is for soccer mom's. Also the car comes with sesatec fake leather..you have to pay through the nose for real leather. The seats especially back seats are too damn firm..they have very little cushioning and there are no optional better seats. The 2018 X3 has extremely loud wind noise above 50 mph. This wind noise is a deal breaker I have driven several 3.0 and they all have the wind noise. Closing the awesome moonroof cover helps a little. Finally the X3 is filled with a hard plastic dashboard and hard plastic door panels. Despite a gorgeous design the lack of soft plastics is ridiculous in 2018. Good news is they have an excellent infotainment, the best auto transmission ever and the 4 cyclinder pulls hard and revs. Sport mode is where the car belongs all the time. All in all they came close to a winner it's a beautiful design..but the greedy bastards cheaped out some items. If they ever got all that remedied I would recommend it, even with the insane pricing packages.

What is the longivity of x3 turbo engine? The turbo I mean. How much to fix or replace?

Still the best vehicle in it class. X3 is the best driving and info system. MB GLC looks luxurious. Audi Q5 amazing tech. BMW might be boring, but it does everything well.

Surprised by the reviewer's view that the new X3 doesn't handle as old BMWs or the Mercedes equivalents. Other reviews that I've seen say the X3 is one of the best handling cars in its class, good enough to go toe to toe with Porsche Macan.

Really depends on what optional packages are on it.nthe M40i version has adaptive suspension and a six..that will run with the Macan. The base 3.0 with base suspension wallows like a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The difference between abase X3 and the M40i in real life is about $15k which is an insane premium but that's just how it is. Practically two different SUVs.

Your specs at 0:54 seconds indicate the xDrive30i has 358 lb-ft, I think you meant 258 lb-ft. Good review nonetheless.

personally I love that BMW has a more modist look without all the crazy technology, its too much for me! I bought my 2018 used for about $38,000 it handles just like my 2007 3 series, only difference is the steering is lighter which I which it was heavier. Overall I would choose it over an Audi, volvo or merc.

Cliff the guru didn't study up too much on this one. That was not the larger optional exec pack instrument panel just the standard. Not that well equipped actually for $57k.

Most of this is lifted straight from the 7-series released last year. So according to you tech from a $120k car is not that great apparently.

  • @keweenawbee

Well, no Exec package so no 12” digital gauge cluster display nor hexagonal Icon Adaptive LED headlights. Pretty sure the 7 has those. On 2nd viewing though I do see a bit of ala carte on this one. Too much phony plastic & garish chrome on the X lines, I much prefer starting with the more modest M-Sport trim. The new X3 requires quite a bit of study as there are 2 primary models, 3 major trims and 3 secondary trim levels, each with their associative minor exterior appearances.

Drove a GLC wasn't that impressed. However, the new Audi Q5 is a really good midsize as well, it's really a toss-up between that and the X3 and it'll come down to personal preference.
