2018 BMW M240i xDrive Review - The B58-Powered Bargain!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

B58? Check. ZF8? Check. Rear-biased AWD? Check. At today's used prices, the F22 M240i xDrive might be the performance bargain no one's talking about.

    There are ways to address the issues in the shortcoming in the steering. M lower control arms will give you two degrees of negative camber (for better turn in) and replacing the hydraulic bushing on the forward thrust arm with a poly bushing, takes most of the (intentionally engineered) "slop" out of the steering. I am very pleased with the results I achieved from these modifications and always encourage every F22 chassis M240 owner I encounter, to also undertake them. (not even that expensive) As you correctly identified, the steering input is by far the biggest performance shortcoming of the car. BMW wants to sell M2's. This car is an M2 that went to college and got married but still knows how to party.

    Seems like some suspension geometry changes to the front end could really help with front end grip and feel. Adding some caster and camber can work wonders, maybe some new coilovers while your in there. I would do that, after market exhaust and maybe a tune would really make a big improvement. If you do it right and don't go to extreme with those modifications it could still have great driveability with minimal impact to reliability. It amazing how some minor adjustments can make a good car into a great drivers car.

    I've driven the M240i xDrive, M240i RWD 6 Speed, M2 LCI and M2 Comp. I would say if you don't track the M240i xDrive is an amazing daily driver. It does fall apart on the track and is not meant for 10/10 driving. It needs better brakes and brake fluid to handle the track, along with better steering feel, but that's where the price difference of the M2's come in. I personally didn't enjoy the m240i rwd 6 speed, the suspension felt too floaty.

    Great video man! Curious though - you said the 2015 M235i was pretty underwhelming and was a 7/10th cars and those are mechanically identical besides the addition of the B58 (and of course xdrive). People say the Supra is more involving than even the M2 and then M2 is supposedly far more involving than this. Does the xDrive actually make it better overall? Or did you just have lower expectations for this one? I'm looking at manual ones so the trans tuning doesn't matter to me.

  • @Zygrene

    @Zygrene

    Жыл бұрын

    Besides the lackluster engine/trans/steering, I wasn't a fan of the M235i RWD because of the open diff. It doesn't really want to slide. At least with xDrive, the 40i feels controllable.

    Seems like BMW didn't get the performance power to weight ration memo. Call me a dreamer, but I can only imagine what the M240i xDrive could do if it dropped 500 lb. Kind makes me drool just thinking about it.

  • @johnmitchell2269
    @johnmitchell2269 Жыл бұрын

    Is the AWD needed and worth the extra money and weight? On bigger cars I can see the appeal, but surely any RWD 2 series is just fine? Fit an LSD and traction/handling won't be an issue. In terms of value for money though, any used B58 engined car is quite desirable imo. Such a strong, refined and reliable engine. Can get 500hp on those stock engines with just a remap and 3 inch downpipe. I've always found the Audi S models (like the S3) to be a bit meh tbh. It's also good to see a yellow BMW, because 99% of the ones I see are blue/silver/grey/white/black.

    For the 200kg penalty, I don't think the XDrive is worth it if you don't live in a snow in winter area. I'd rather have a lighter RWD car with this chassis. Also put a mechanical Quaife or Wavetrac LSD on these things and they reallh come alive.
