2018 / 2019 Ford EcoSport AWD Review and Comparison

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Looking for an AWD Ford Fiesta with more ground clearance? There's an EcoSport for that now. Ford's smallest crossover is the result of Ford's South American and Indian market's demands to have a small, capable crossover but it fills a needed niche in America as well. If you're looking for an itty-bitty CUV that's comfortable, capable and inexpensive, this Ford's for you.

We have a 2018 with 120 thousand miles with zero problems. We use it for deliveries. We like it so much we went out and bought a 2020 all Wheel drive. Had it for 10 months and really liking the new sync system. And it’s really Good in snow

Price sells cars. I just bought a 2019 Ecosport SE with heated seat, a moonroof, navigation and AWD. It was during the Chicago auto show and was larded up with several rebates bring the purchase price down to $18,600. A subcompact with AWD could not have been purchased in any other brand for that price. An AWD Trax was about $900 more but came without the roof, Nav and heated seats. Hell, cruise control was extra. The Nissan may be cheaper but cant be had with AWD at any price. We traded a '15 Soul on this when it became known that the redesign would not have AWD. I think Kia miss the boat on that. I would have bought another but not with out AWD. PS The wife LOVES her Ecosport. She was sad about her Soul but forgot all about it after 10 minutes in the Ecosport.

Finally someone gave an honest review of Ecosport I test drove this thing and frankly its good, people bashed it like it sucks,,, looks bad, personally, I had no interest in this because of the over bashing this thing got in the internet, but after driving one,I liked it, it was practical, fun to drive, smooth unlike shitty CVTs, even rode and handled well, and the dealers are giving the Titanium AWD rebates and on road price of around USD 24,990 for the fully loaded version, and in that context, it felt really nice

I Love it!! These guys get to drive all makes and models, usually top of the line. I paid $17,000 for 4 Wheel drive. I like the vehicles with short wheel base in snow. I do not haul passengers except my dogs so as long as I am comfortable I am happy. Most critics do not like this car but I have read many comments from THE AVERAGE person that do!!

I really appreciate your review. I bought my very first brand new car. It is the 2018 ecosport s! I had a 2009 Chevy Malibu with 164,000 miles exactly. It had been wrecked once and where I'm 5ft 3 , too many blind spots. We went to our local ford dealer . I did the worst mistake, ZERO research! I was trying to get a 2017 ford escape. But, the sales guy talked me into getting a brand new 2018 ford ecosport s for 1.9 apr and no money down ( I did trade in my car). I didn't realize that the car was so tiny at the time. I kinda got lost in the moment and shocked I even got approved for a car. I have had buyers remorse but, I'm growing to love the Ecosport! I'm a mom with two kids, not to mention short! So,it works and I can see the dreaded curbs ;).

The Ford Ecosport is one of the only sub compact SUVs that has AWD, towing capability, and an automatic transmission (no CVT) at this low price. The only other option that I can think of is the Mazda CX-3 but the Mazda has hardly any cargo space. For me, the towing capacity of the Ecosport is what makes it stand out above almost every other vehicle in its class.

@Richard Favreau The first gear comes in handy when you want to pass someone from a stop. In sports mode it seems to be more usable because it holds it to a higher RPM. IN ECO mode, it shifts to the CVT pretty fast, which makes sense. Overall, it's WAY better than a standard CVT. I don't tend to use manual "shifting" that much. I do use sports mode when climbing a hill on the freeway. It's pretty much like turning off overdrive with the old geared automatics. My had milage is way above 42 on the freeway without really even trying..43-46 is the norm for me on longer trips. The adaptive cruise control all the way to zero is very useful in freeway traffic. Only available with the CVT. the manual has adaptive cruise but it's only down to about 25 I believe. It also lets you downshift and doesn't cancel cruise control being on. Overall, the manual is a little bit faster but I hear the clutch engagement point is a little vague and it's not all that short of a throw on the shifter. You take a hit in mpg with the manual. But you get auto rev matching with the manual. It's a good car to learn a stick with.

Guys it’s Echo-Sport because originally it was designed back in 2003 in Brazil and that’s where the name comes from. I don’t know what was Ford thinking with bringing it to the US because it really wasn’t ready. And this is coming from someone in South America where we have tons of these things.

Alex is right when you look at incentives this SUV comes out ahead. You can get a base model for under 21K with the 2.0L and AWD after the $1500.00 incentive and get 2.9% for up to 84 months also. If you lease there is a $3500.00 cash back and you can get it for less than $200.00. I don't know about anyone else, but I would rather have a new SUV with a full warranty than buy something else used , which would have a higher payment and may need tires, brakes and 30K or 60k service soon after buying it. This is for zip code 06111, other parts of the country may have the same deals, and some will be different.

Several channels have commented along the lines of "If we had to invent the car today from scratch, most manufacturers would design an SUV/Cross-over body style". The packaging within a given wheelbase is much better and the more commanding view of the road is also more popular with owners. Weight is not necessarily affected and torsional rigidity with a more boxy style is improved. People who have been in a vintage car from the 1920s say, often comment on the amount of room inside these old cars, that's becuause they are more upright and taller than a modern sedan. So we may actually just be going back to what a typical car was like 100 - 60 years ago packaging wise.

A Focus Hatch just makes way more sense. More space, better fuel economy, transmission options, and multiple engine options. In the city, AWD isn't really important. Small crossovers just don't make any sense at all. I never could understand our American car market. Always buying the product that is least efficient for their needs.

  • @watershed44

Gregory Kanniard Sadly many American consumers are easily manipulated and led by the nose....most consumers are told what they want to buy, they don't make a choice based on their own actual needs and wants. You see in the US that they will flood the car lots with certain high margin products and that is ALL. If you want something else you just cannot get it or the car companies make it difficult or impossible to order it.

  • @rustlesee

When the regular cars are gone, EcoSport is going to be Ford's cheapest, entry level vehicle and the pricing is insane. I saw nothing about the EcoSport that seemed $28,000 worth. I recently bought a 2020 Titanium. With rebates and dealer discount it was massively ($10+k) under MSRP, by far the cheapest AWD vehicle available in any segment. I agree that acceleration is lacking, although I think it has more to do with the automatic transmission than the actual engine (as alluded to in Alex's review). I know people generally dislike CVTs but I have no doubt having one would improve both acceleration and MPG in this car as well as how fast it "feels". I own a Fusion hybrid and the CVT in it has performed flawlessly. If Ford improves the transmission/acceleration, adds safety tech, and puts in a standard rear hatch instead of the swinging door in the next generation, they won't need to discount this so heavily (but I'm not complaining).

Earlier in the year I took a test drive of this car and I had to chuckle at the $27k sticker price. Reviewing the sticker details, the car content was primarily from India and China. Possibly the engine was from the USA. If the tariffs hit, then I would think the price of this car would also take a hit. The car may be cute, but that is about it. I agree with the alternatives mentioned in place of this car and to that list I would say that for $27k a fairly nice equipped Ford Escape could be had.

I saw this at the New York Auto Show and I was impressed with the interior and exterior. However, they did not have final pricing at the show. I expected it to be priced just a bit higher than a Fiesta at maybe $19,000-$23,000, but at over $27,000, the car just isn't worth it. Like the tiny Buick, this car is very noticeably narrow when you sit inside. It was clearly designed for Europe (as the Buick was designed for Korea). That's neither good nor bad, just different from competitors from Honda and Hyundai. Having driven the Fiesta upon which this EcoSport is based, I can say the chassis is extremely sorted and it's more fun to the drive than your average Honda or Hyundai or Kia. I have to say I saw 100s of these on the road during a recent trip to Maine. Did Hertz buy up all of the inventory?

The Buick Encore is sub $30k for most if not all trims. We bought a Preferred trim for $21k and my friend bought an Essence trim for $27k, people in the Buick forums are buying their Encore for less than $30k so it does compete with this vehicle. Value for money the Encore is the best vehicle in this class for sub $30k subcompact CUV.

To me, Subaru Crosstrek looks handsdown the best option for the money. Yes, it is quite longer than the rest of the competitors here, which may kill the whole purpose of getting a small(est) SUV, but to be honest, how big do u think that 174 inches can be? So... I would just take the Crosstrek and call it a day. Thank you very much

MLosUno , I thought the same as you. Ford’s explanation is that the pronunciation difference is to distinguish the vehicle EchoSport from the Eco-boost engine. Going further, they explained that the EchoSport may or may not be an Eco-boost model. Looking at this entire mess of a vehicle, the pronunciation difference is the only thing that makes any sense to me whatsoever. And I’m a Ford guy who loves his fully loaded and tuned Titanium Hatchback.

The AWD EcoSport is approx 400 lbs heavier than my 2014 Focus Titanium Hatchback but has my Focus 2.0 160hp engine re-tuned to 166 hp. The EcoSport is heavier and slower than a Focus Hatch AND it is slightly smaller in most interior dimensions. And I haven’t even mentioned the 1.0 liter 123hp Ecoboost, which I would not want to trust in a tight situation merging onto an interstate highway. This car could have gone a long way toward being a winner if one of the ST engines had been offered, Either the 200 hp fiesta ST engine or the 252 hp focus ST engine. And one other thing, from a design standpoint, the rear door which opens outward to me is just terrible. I haven’t heard too much discussion about it. maybe I am out of touch. I’d like to hear what other people think.

166 hp but needs 11.2 sec to 60 wtf - and then there is another engine that's more than 40 hp weaker… 1.0l engine in a car this heavy and tall is completely out of place, it needs to stay on max turbo boost all the time to move and will wear out quickly. Probably the worst relation from acceleration to fuel economy out of any car on the market too. Base version and base price with that engine completely useless.

Outdated with the lack of safety tech, but it's a perfect size with good clearance/angles. All the Ford products we have have seem to be just good enough, but not great. (like hand-me-downs from Europe Ford..). The 2019 Renegade will outsell this, and the ZF 9-speed might be something people will deal with. A CX-3 just might be a better vehicle, the Kona, HRV, & Rogue Sport AWD systems, clearance, & Transmission don't seem suited for climbing slopes otherwise it would be and overall killer. The Subcompact SUV market is just a mix bag. I always end up saying i'm going to buy a Crosstrek, Renegade, or CX-3, but we all know two of those are complete opposites. Don't SUV's need to be able to take you off the pavement? 😂 At least the Ecosport, Renegade and Crosstrek will. LOVE THE REVIEWS ALEX, you keep me informed!
