20170520 Violent Straight Line Winds - Squall Line
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Extremely violent straight line winds from a squall line that approaches from the south. While I was filming this the same gust of wind picked a trampoline up from the back of a house down the street and threw it over their house, across the street and into the volleyball net.

Wait, some people here are skeptical about these being straight line winds? If you ask me, this certainly looks like it exceeds severe status, even if it doesnt cause MASS DESTRUCTION like some people think it needs to have to be considered straight-line. While straight-line winds are no laughing matter, a storm that exceeds severe status is really the only criteria needed for it to be considered straight-lined. Especially at around 2:23

Yea agreed, and video always doesn't show the real scale. I've serviced those trees out in that ditch for the better part of 10 years and I built that fence myself. The fence posts are 6x6 not 4x4, and they go 4ft into the ground. So what kind of force does it take to snap 4 posts 6x6 solid wood?! It was a lot more force than it looks like!!

Yes straight line winds can tear down a brick wall. Seen it happen with my 2 eyes.
If you get another bad storm please record it because I love watching storm videos!! 💨🌪⛈
A squall line is a line of severe thunderstorms with high winds, hail, lots of cloud to ground lightning and very heavy rain. These storms also produce tornadoes.
Just an average summer storm where I come from.
Nice video... always exciting to see strong storms. But it doesn't look like much more than 50 mph...which is strong, but generally not damaging.
not sure if these are really are straight-line winds, at least not by NSSL's definition, but if they are you were lucky to be quite far from the point of the microburst or downburst that caused them. if these were confirmed to be straight-line winds then they must've just barely made it past the 50mph minimum. usually winds at that speed -at least- break tree branches and knock over most freestanding objects which i saw little evidence of here.

Hmm... they said it caused damage and if you ask me, those sure do look like atleast 50mph. Those look like genuine straight line winds.
Hey Seth, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) :) Cheers, Felix

+Stormguy5297 I had an active period of storms this summer, but other than that it's been relatively quiet for severe weather in my area. I also didn't have any severe weather last year with the exception of a tornado outbreak one day.

Typical strong summer thunderstorm winds for us. Nothing fearsome.

It would to me honestly
They usually form ahead of cold fronts.
@SethEden

In this case it was an air blast caused by outflow displaced by a cloud burst. The squall line itself was indeed a cold front in a volatile atmospheric conditions.
That is strong wind oh my god

I know right people don't usually realize the camera tends to make things look smaller plus those trees are way down in the bottom of a 10ft deep ditch behind the fence! :-D

Mr. TornadoMan215 This is not a tornado. I would have heard the sound of a train and felt the pressure drop. I've been hit with an EF0 and this was not even close to that kind of power. An EF0 would have knocked those buckets over and displaced the columns for that patio covering from their footings and the shed would have been damaged too. I know this because I surveyed the damage when the EF0 hit and that is exactly what I saw.

Seth Eden I never knew straight line winds where this powerful! How high where the wind gusts in this storm?
@SethEden
6 жыл бұрын
Mr. TornadoMan215 Oh yea straight line winds can actually be stronger than an EF0. The upper bound for straight line winds is probably around the level of an EF1....unless your in a hurricane/typhoon situation. I estimate the winds here at about 60mph perhaps gusting to 80mph. That may be a low number but a micro burst like that even at 80mph gust carries a punch like an air blast and that is what snapped those fence posts like match sticks. Tornados also have a punch-air blast but usually quite a bit stronger because of the engine that powers the rotating column of air. (The thing that makes the freight train sound)

Mr. TornadoMan215 quick side story about air blast, most people don't know that an air blast is what created the massive mile wide meteor crater in Arizona. An air blast also leveled a forest in Yosemite valley when a rock the size of an office building broke off from the cliff El'Capitan and shattered against an out crop of granite turning it into a falling mass of gravel. The mass it the foot of the cliff and the resulting air blast out in front of the mass leveled the forest before the mass of gravel settled.
