2017 Mazda CX-5: Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode Info
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
A quick video discussing Mazda CX-5 electronic parking brakes (EPB) and the procedure to put the system into service mode. It is important that you put these systems into service mode prior to doing any work on the rear brakes. If you compress the rear brake caliper pistons without doing this, you can damage the calipers and the EPB motors.

I just wanted to give a big thank you! For posting this information on KZread, just did my brakes today, and did not know about the e-brake service mode 👍
Nice and clean procedure, nicely explained and nothing's missing. Thanks!
I know this is an old video, but I have to let you know you made this process much easier. Thank you immensely.

You're welcome!
Thanks for an easy to follow, straight to the point video. I've watched half a dozen on how to engage the EPB service mode, and they were all confusing/wordy/too long!
Thank you for your video.. I just finished brake job for 2018 cx5 my daughter’s car I was struggling on caliper compressor ... Now I am 100% confident with your video!
You're a lifesaver. Was working on my 2018 Mazda 3 and this was the trick i needed to get that blasted piston compressed. There is no telling how many times I rotated that damn thing and it was not compressing.

Thank you! This was a very well done and clear video. It worked like a charm on my 2007 Mazda3 Touring 2.5.
Excellent step by step video . Thank you from a Brake tech in Australia!
This was the first video that popped up for the question that I asked for resetting the parking brake as other people said before kept it easy kept it simple and got to the point fast without making a big production out of something stupid thank you

Excellent job. In 3 minutes I went from pre-warned and hesitant to understanding this Mazda's electronic maze and game cheating design. thanks for breaking the enigma code!
Hats off to you for this helpful tutorial! I appreciate your effort and know how!
Thanks for sharing this practical video..Changed my cx 5 rear brake flawlessly..saved me from buying piston compression tool..

Just saved 350 dollars just for labour. Saved that money to buy new rotors and pads on all 4 wheels. Thanks Sir. ✌️👍🤜🤛
Wow! Very professional and to the point. Great video.
I've changed a lot of brakes on my older vehicles over the years but never heard of this operation before. I couldn't figure out why my caliper was so tight. thanks for sharing.

@@Addi_Teacha509 Sorry to hear that. But now that you have the pads out, won't the electronic release still work?
very helpful had no idea how to put brake in and out of service mode thank you.
BANG,BANG THANK YOU MAN!!!!!! Thanks for posting this video, my brakes started vibrating after a hard braking I had to do. I think the rotors got warped as per mechanic and thanks to you!!!! now I can do it on my own. BY THE WAY MY CAR IS A MAZDA 3 2017 6 SPEED MANUAL AND THIS STEPS DO WORK ON IT!!!!!! Thanks...

Thank you! You saved me today. Very straight forward.
Excellent, excellent video. Thanks for posting. Clear and to the point...but more importantly, it works! I know your title states 2017, but it also works on my 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve.

Well done champ. Great explanation and direction. Keep it up.
Thank you, I tought i had to call a tow but you saved my day!!
I looked everywhere to find where the notches were supposed to be " 12 & 6" on the piston. I had rotated piston before learning about maintenance mode. Everything went back together fine, except i couldn't get the epb light to turn off. Thank u so much
Nailed it my man! Thank you so much! Don't understand why people could dislike this video, but screw the haters!
Thank you for doing this video. It doesn’t get any more straightforward. Much appreciated!

Perfect! DO not rotate the piston. just compress it after you put the EPB in the service mode.
Excellent thank you best tutorial I’ve seen on this works a treat.
I have no idea how I got into service mode, could be cause I just installed a new battery; but this was helpful to fix it! Thank you!

Thank you for this video. I just did all my brakes on the 2017 Mazda 3 and I thought I messed up the motor for the electronic brake
Superb! Very helpful. Thanks 😊
For anyone wondering this IS also the procedure for a manual gearbox with the E-Brake. Enjoy happy motoring.
Great video simple and helpful
Thanks for saving me time!
Thank you 😊 Great video!
Sometimes it’s useful to give a lot off instructions to not mess it up, but in this case I like the straight to the point instructions. Watched another video for like 20 minutes just to get no information at all. You get a like. 👍🏽
Thanks 🙏 for show us this video
SHORT AND SWEET ,THANKS YOU
Super helpful thank you!!!
Great info! Thank you!
Hey awesome video thanks for the info
Bro ..... GREAT VIDEO.
Solid video thank you. I stepped into an aborted brake job (inexperienced diyer) pistons were all the way out. Saved them some cash and a dealer visit

On a 2020, the instructions worked but the parking brake icon didn't show when in service mode like in the video. I did hear the parking brake motors actuate.
Thanks brother!

I try to be quick and to the point when I need to be. Try to switch things up between quick videos and longer, more detailed ones. No need to share my life story, or talk about my sponsors (I don’t have any) 😂. Glad you liked the video!
Great description - thanks! What should I do if I rotated the rear caliper out of the 12 and 6 o'clock position? Is there a way of determining which notch should be at 12 and 6? Maybe it does not matter.
@AKJeeper
2 жыл бұрын
Once you’re in service mode, you can rotate the piston back so one pair of the notches is oriented at 12 and 6 o’clock.
Can I use this tutorial for my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 rear breaks?
you can push the piston in by sticking a screw driver between the outer pad and caliper housing
Thank you
I did all this but the maintenance mode (P!) Light stays on but everything works as expected... Any ideas how to get the light to go out? Thanks in advance.
Awesome video straightforward
Thanks For Sharing👍👍👍👍

You're welcome!
Do you pump brake pedal several times to set pistons close pads before taking system out of service mode?
@AKJeeper
3 жыл бұрын
No - the EPB system winds the pistons out during the calibration sequence which occurs when you take the system out of service mode. When I do brake work on cars with EPBs, I’ll take the system out of service mode before touching the brake pedal.
Does this protocol also apply to 2019 CX5 AWD? What are the torque values for the caliper sidepins? Do you enable maintenance before or after jacking the vehicle? Thanks!
@AKJeeper
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this should be the same procedure for a 2019. Torque for the caliper bolts 17-22 ft/lbs. I usually wait until the vehicle is off the ground and the wheel is off before putting it into maintenance mode, but you can do that prior to all of that, if you'd like.
Question, what can happen if the rear piston is turned when retracting it (while in service mode). I helped a friend do his brakes and saw the notches in the piston so I figured it needed to be spun. I use a tool similar to what is in the video, (but with the adapter with pins that fit into the slots) and I slowly compressed the piston, but I could also feel the motor turning (so I went extra slow). Everything seems to be operating normally as far as the epb and rear brakes in general, but my friend is a little paranoid after reading you're not supposed to spin the piston.

I did the same thing not knowing better. Only after the fact did I come across this video. All seems to be working well. What now???😮
THANKS !
does anyone know the torque specs on this model. Both rotor and caliper bolts?
Thanks for the great vid, do you know if you need to be in service mode to bleed the breaks? or can it be done like a normal bleed?
@AKJeeper
2 жыл бұрын
Bleed as usual. Service mode is only for when you are removing the caliper and replacing the brake pads.
Have this exact car and taking it out of service mode did not work for me. I repeated the steps till I heard the pistons doing their thing, but the light persisted to stay on. So, I ended up doing everything listed but only pushing the Start button twice and that finally got me out of service mode.
When you press the brake pedal or depress the gas
getting parking brake malfunction after changing pads and following this.. any ideas?
I have tried to do this but the service parking light does not turn on, is this a sign to panic?
Quick question, do you pump your brakes after reinstalling everything , before or after resetting epb procedure? Thx

I also have this same question.
Just change my rear brakes. Did all this correctly also take it out but somehow the P light is on and brake lighting flashing
thanks you so much for the video
Great video. One question. Do you have to put the rear brakes in service mode to bleed them?
@AKJeeper
3 жыл бұрын
Bleed the brakes as you normally would 🙂 Service mode is only for when you remove the caliper from the vehicle, like when replacing pads. Hope this helps!
