2017 Lincoln MKZ | CarGurus Test Drive Review

Shop new Lincoln MKZ listings: goo.gl/1qNAzr
As Ford’s luxury brand, Lincoln would love to find favor with Americans who buy German and Japanese luxury cars. This year’s redesign marks the departure of the old split-wing grille on the MKZ and the arrival of a new face to reflect that of the Continental concept, as well as a simpler, less futuristic center console, Sync 3, and an exclusive new V6 engine that produces 350 hp with front-wheel drive or 400 with all-wheel drive to get the MKZ to 60 mph in under 5 seconds.
The 2017 MKZ sedan offers a 2.0-liter inline four, that new 3.0-liter V6, or a hybrid powertrain in a redesigned car that hopes to re-define “entry-level luxury.” The 2.0-liter four gets a 5-hp and 5-lb-ft boost for this year, which cost it a touch of efficiency. Our reviewer loved driving the four and the MKZ’s price, but isn’t sure whether he’d recommend the Luxury package. We look forward to finding out whether the new version of this sedan can better compete with vehicles like the Acura TLX, Lexus ES 350, Infiniti Q50, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. I own the 2017 V6 fully loaded without a heated steering wheel, the revel sound, and the panoramic roof. I was given a 2019 loaner since I lease the reserve model and got to see some of the new features and particthe amazing sound. I am not an audiophile, but holy cow is that system amazing. If you like classic music and better clear highs it is there. Mine without the new Revel system $2500 extra it appears, has great sound and enough base, but there is something magical about that sound and you have to have listened to the same songs side by side to appreciate. 75% of the songs sound much better, and 20% blow your mind. First, everyone needs to stop complaining about the Push button shifter. Car review people are holding this car back because of not being use to it. Once you get use to it, you never EVER want to go back. Con/Complaints: The newer versions have the auto hold feature always on which is a dream on the legs. The 2017 you needs to be buckled and then must remember to push the button on the other side of the console which is not convenient. It could be a bit quieter in its class, but we are talking a bit. The heated steering wheel in the 2019 is way too hot and there is no way to adjust. Like the reviewer say pulling out with a V6 gives you some lag. This is my only performance complaint about the car and wonder if I have AWD in the newer 2019 which is improved if that might be taken care of. I didn’t get an AWD loaner and on the four cylinder. The USB adapters in the front don’t work almost at all. This was the case with the 2017 and 2019. Crazy angry at this. However, you can run wires from the back to have tablets hiding under the center console charging. I love putting my tablet under there. Huge bonus for us tablet junky men without purses. There is a DC adapter down there and I use spring loaded chardginf cables and pull from there. That is a bit of a pain, but not a deal breaker. There could be a little more space in the back for leg room if the driver is tall or sits back to stretch those legs. The back up camera could come on a little faster. Takes 5-7 seconds. You can get around this by buckling after hitting reverse. That needs to be fixed and think it did in the 2019, but I am not positive. I didn’t notice which makes me think they fixed that. Pros: I car always gives you crazy power at 350 horse power and the sound is quiet. I don’t like hearing the engine. It feels very modern and I love the slopped design of the center console. Too many pro reviews complain about this, but I would bet if they spend a month in it they would not only get use to it but find it so ergonomic and refined. All this talk about cheap this and that is BS. All the knobs and the menu on the dash is intuitive and feels great to the touch. Only the autohold button is out of place and the USB in the mini compartment and the pull is center compartment don’t really function in both the 2017& 2019 and the nautilus. I don’t know why they are supplying crap power to those two ports. Engineering mistake. Very comfortable seats and only better after a year. Rear seat are very comfortable. Heats up and cools really fast. Doors feel great opening and closing...very smooth and solid. Space for the drivers left side is very generous. The cup holders down below are nicely designed. The power seats and telescopic steering wheel move fast and smooth getting in and out. Everything on the steering wheel is where it needs to be and the adaptive cruise control is great. The 2019 goes a step forward, might have been the nautilus, but it has a camera in the front that helps auto keep move the steering wheel with minor adjustments. Wow for long commutes or traveling. Steering wheel feels great to the touch. Stealing is solid with FWD except when pulling out from a dead stop turning. There is some annoying lag. This is the cars weak performance issue. The car works well with both android and iPhones-we are a split family with both companies. Mirrors tuck to help you know the car is locked and you also have a button if you are in a tight space sometimes backing out. The center arm rest I’d GREAT and the reason for the cockpit design like my fist car in HS back in 93: Cranberry metallic Mitsubishi Eclipse. Great view looking out toward the front for a sedan. It is no Sienna, but you get the point. Tons of front leg room to all sides and depth. Very comfortable seats and head rest. So,I’d lumbar support. The 2019 had more bells and whistles with the seat (20-22 points) I think, but I didn’t get to try them. I was soooooo focused I the Revel Sound Shstem. Whoowa Having your phone, or Alexa at home, turn on your car and warm it up while you are paying you bill etc. is great! You just got to remember. Same with the heated and cooled seats. Nice to have cold seat when coming out of the office in the hot summer. You can even have the windows come down then come up and turn the AC on. Or just the windows down will do on most cases. Did I mention the V6 ...her that one and pay for the extra gas. I consider it an essential safety feature being able to get out of a blind spot or someone coming into my line on a dime. Don’t get hit, hit the paddle and move forward super faster. The blind spot detect and the sensors in the tech package make parking and getting out so easy and safe. The blind spot is very, very desirable because the view in your blind spot could be better as the author explained. The trunk has awesome space. I am not a wheel rim guy, but damn those 19” rims look sweet! Not a big fan of moonroofs but those can also open to air out the car and I do like the extra light at night. The Lincoln lettering is so cool when approaching the car and has saved my shoes a couple times from spills and puddles. I wish I could have gotten the pearl blue. If you get a chance to see how many colors hide in the magical color in 2017 get it. I got the silver. Looks great, but the Pearl blue was out of this world.

Kinda sucks, but I love my Lincoln MKZ 2.0T, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's super classy and unique looking and I've had more compliments in the first year of owning this car than I've had in my lifetime. Love it. The front grill and chrome trim and rear end are just all top notch sexville. Thank you, Lincoln for making such a beautiful car. Hopefully you come back to making cars again, instead of all out of budget SUVS. The MKZ was very affordable.

Wow! What a very engaging and entertaining review! I love all of the camera angles and 'picture in picture' overlays you use. It gives us, the viewers, a better understanding and visual of what you are trying to portray! As far as the MKZ goes, I appreciate it's very clean and sophisticated styling. Also, the center stack looks a lot more high quality and luxurious this time around. I am not a huge fan of the rear fascia (I feel like it doesn't complement the front end design all that much). It looks sort of like two different vehicles, from front to rear. On the bright side, though, this vehicle under cuts most of its competitors when it comes to price. All in all, Lincoln did a fairly good job differentiating this vehicle from its brother the Fusion. Keep up the impeccable work, Michael Perkins! -DriveAndBeDriven "The Quest To Record The Best!"

While yes the CTS is far and away better...even so than the Germans. This car is not there yet when it comes to that level. STILL from a value proposition I would take this car. Who cares if it is not RWD but the older crowd. It is very nice and I like the dash layout and the over all styling. People forget that there are people that just want a smooth quiet and isolating drive. This is not a bad choice for just that.

I like the new Cadillacs too but ur a bit off in ur assessment here. MKZ is def a sporty luxury sedan with superb engineering & great value. It's new 3.0T EcoBoost is incredible in every way. Most get the AWD so dynamically its much more than a fwd luxury car & not chasing Audi or BMW as Caddy is trying an partially succeeding. We have 2 - MKZ AWD EcoBoost & are totally happy. Try one you wont be sorry!

I wish Ford did not discontinue this majestic mid-size car. Realistically, their Lincoln division is only selling ~20k Corsairs and ~20k Aviator in the U.S. annually right now. MKZ achieved similar sales numbers. Even without a refresh, the MKZ will still be competitive in the segment. (I can't say the same for the Ford Fusion, which may be why Ford shut down the production line entirely.)

Cars coming off a lease are in very fine condition and must pass rigorous inspections before they are put out on the sales lot. If the car is badly beaten, mechanically or otherwise, they get sent to auction, or even maybe a used car lot. Dealers will do all the mechanical work and factory services. Dealers wouldn't even accept the car and put it up for sale unless it passes multiple hundred tests. And it's people like me the hell would rather have someone else take the devaluation on the car. I would rather pay 23 thousand than 45 thousand. Also, I just purchased a '15 MKZ. Had 30K miles on it, but the dealer replaced all the brakes and a bunch of other little odds and ends. The main problem that I saw, (and only I see these stupid little things, is the LIghted Lincoln step sill was scratched to hell on both sides, and I ordered up brand new ones and put them in my self. Plain and simple. Four clips to pop. Anyway I love my MKZ, in perfect condition, a real head turner, and I didn't' spend a small fortune for it.

This was a good review but the biggest issue with this car is that the Fusion exists. They have made some significant strides with the MKZ but the Fusion is still just a much better bang for the buck and the cars are too similar to overlook it. And when you add all the really good stuff to the LIncoln it quickly approaches 60k dollars. This isn't a 60k dollar car, no matter what options it has. Good value for 45k or less. It shouldn't max out over 50 though. And it's starting price is honestly about 5k too high.

  • @JBM425

The one thing to keep in mind with an MKZ is that it is actually slightly less expensive in base/Premier trim ($32 to $36K depending on the dealer) than a fully loaded Fusion Platinum edition. It's arguably as well equipped or in some ways better than the Fusion Platinum, and definitely better than the Fusion Titanium or SE Luxury models. The MKZ Select is only about $1,200 extra over the Premier but also opens up more options; the Premier has few to no options. Another thing with the MKZ is the Hybrid version does not cost any extra than the 2.0T, whereas there is a significant extra price for the Hybrid on Fusion models (around $1,200-1,500).

Got the 2017 Platinum Fusion AWD in July 2017. Evaluating incentives, zero financing, my $ 41,500 Fusion probably came to about $ 35,000. That’s after subtracting the value of the various incentives. I’m an older driver with diminishing driver skills and wanted every safety feature. The blind spot monitoring, lane keeping, and cross traffic monitoring are must features. The self parking let’s me park in front of a store, without having to find a large space and walking back. The adaptive cruise control is the only feature I haven’t used.
