2017 Hyundai Elantra Limited Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K UHD!

Hyundai's Elantra looks and feels like the Sonata's Mini-Me. With an attractive exterior and modern interior, this Elantra is a leap ahead of the last model. But when it comes to top picks in the segment I put the Civic a hair higher. Join me as I explain why.

Hey alex. your one of the best reiewers out there . I have had my 2017 Elantra for a year now. SE with pop and tech packages . little over 14000 miles. 0 problems. one big requirement for my new car was a real automatic transmission. that eliminated lots of cars! No more cvt for me. Nightmare ! over ten thousand dollar repair quote! I like this car just fine and LOVE this automatic transmission !

What car did you have that needed a new $10k CVT? I had bad luck with CVTs as well, so when I was shopping for a new car the last time, I decided I wouldn't consider any car with a CVT. I ended up with a 2018 Elantra SEL.

***** But for the sake of gas mileage, they're going the CVT route and since people are buying, I won't be surprised if this becomes the norm and the traditional automatic will go bye bye and instead of repairing CVT''s when they break, they'll just sell you a refurbished one and deduct the core when you return it, like they do with rack and pinion units.

Toyota still uses traditional automatics. I think the Prius is the only one with a CVT. It doesn't seem anyone has figured out how to make a CVT as reliable as a traditional automatic which is why I think Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, and Mazda are staying away from it.

Hey Alex, long time follower of your videos including The Mountain Garden. I was hoping you could begin to include a demonstration/explanation of the Driver Assist features in your videos. There is considerable differences in these systems, and it's become a huge point of differentiation for my personal shopping. For example, the Hyundai Elantra appears to be able to keep the lane like the Honda Civic, unlike the Fords that only correct the lane departure. For the Adaptive Cruise Control, perhaps an explanation of speeds active, and smoothness/reaction times. Thanks for making some of the best review videos out there!

After owing an elantra 2017 se MPG sucks. I get 25 average to as low as 24. Too much hard plastic, boring inside , manual e brake that eats lots of space, not a very dood ride, noisy and the worst, base models have to theft deterrent!!!! Mine got stolen so easily by just putting a screwdriver and turning the steering wheel back a forth until the lock inside broke. You'll be surprise that on 2017 there are still cars without that feature. The good about the is that it's been reliable.

I own a 2017 Elantra. They have a 2.0 Atkinson cycle variant of the Nu engine. I would stay away. Mine, and according to many reports the dealer told me they get, is they make a loud ticking/tapping noise when cold. It sounds like a diesel. Dealer reported Hyundai said it was normal because the metal shrinks in cold weather. I have never ever had a car do this in cold weather and I have had my fair share of bombs. I bought it used so am only covered up to 60000 miles. I said to Hyundai ok if this is so normal cover my car to the full 10 year 100000 mile warranty. They just keep giving me the run around. I mean if there is no issue with the car it would not cost them anything to give the full powertrain warranty. I have no confidence in the longevity of this engine and unfortunately it looks like they are putting these in more models like the Kona. Also I think these engines are in the Kia Forte and other Kia models.

sedans are where I wonder how you get out of the boot... seems like you'd get stuck more easily in a sedan boot than a mini?

Cars with trunks have release levers on the inside since generally the only way out is through the trunk. A car with a hatch doesn't need one since you can just climb over the seat if necessary

suezotiger ah ok, I've not had a sedan in years. I don't know if it's required in Australia to have a latch. Alex seemed to get stuck pretty good in the mini a couple of days ago :p

Hyundai Elantra sells -43.6% in April 2016 and -34.2% in 2016 compared to 2015. I have always a question: a lot of cars receive good comments from auto reviewers (like Mazda 6, CX-5, or new Elantra), but the sales number are extremely poor compared to Corolla, Camry, Rav4, CRV these boring models. For example, Rav4 has been on top SUV sale for 6 months surpassing CRV and Escape, but on all kinds of auto reviews, this vehicle is below average. I do believe the normal buyers are the car reviewers share different opinions.

+Dahis39 Not entirely true. Most buyers want an Appliance and are too psychologically 'young' to experiment with other makers.

+Chris Sorreda What in God's name does "psychologically young" mean? So does a 40 year old that buys a prius have the mind of a 16 year or something?

The reason why the new Elantra isn't selling as good as last model is because Hyundai drop the ball with this car. They made the car with a "weak" engine, cheap hard plastic door panels and not as value friendly as before. The new Civic, Mazda 3 and Cruze really put out great competitive cars at great prices while the Hyundai Elantra just felt comfortable doing subtle changes that didn't take them above the competition.

The Elantra is more bland but it's very mature, not as futuristic as Civic, which has a wide rear-end that takes some getting used to. Like you said it depends on your personal style, Honda did take some risk and I think it will pay off. Hyundais Elantra looks more grown up, and they will sell a lot of them. I've test driven both, I slightly prefer the Civics interior & available turbo and Apple Car Play

If you're financing through Toyota Financial services, know that we are no longer allowed to use our credit cards to pay for our carpayments, RIDICULOUS!!!! If you want to use your credit card, you can only do it through Western Union which charges a 27 dollar fee, depending on your car payment and as much as 80 dollars if you want to pay cash. Terrible idea to charge your customers such insane amounts in order to pay their bills. Because they're afraid we will accumulate points. That is your only option if you want to use your credit card. WHY?????
