2017 Honda Ruckus vs. 2017 Yamaha Zuma 50 - Adventure Scooters in the Sierra! | ON TWO WHEELS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Retro scramblers in the Rockies, ADVs at Laguna Seca, Groms in the office… Zack and Ari love taking motorcycles out of their intended environment. And in this episode of OTW, the guys haul a Yamaha Zuma and Honda Ruckus into the Sierra Nevada to compete in the Adventure Rally (www.advrally.com)-an organized off-road event for big-ass adventure bikes. Can the scooters hold their own, or will they stall out as soon as the trail gets steep? Watch the episode to find out!
--
How do you measure the quality of your adventure? At organized events like the ADV Rally it’s easy-the success of your day is determined by waypoints visited and points accrued. But while most riders at this year’s Rally in the Sierra Nevada were on full-size ADVs like KTM’s 1090 Adventure R and Honda’s Africa Twin, the On Two Wheels duo opted to saddle up on something a little smaller, cheaper, and significantly less powerful.
More specifically, they entered the competition on 49cc scooters from Honda and Yamaha. Yup, Zack and Ari were the guys who showed up to a gunfight with butter knives. But after riding retro scramblers through the Rockies and ripping ADVs around Laguna Seca, the boys have learned that it's usually a lot of fun to take a motorcycle out of its element. Plus, they wanted to prove that adventure is in the throttle hand of the beholder, and that you don't need a $20,000 bike to roam off road.
And as it turns out, the scooters killed it. Sure they were slow (so slow!) and their low-slung frame rails touched down regularly, but the scooters' maneuverability, balance, and low weight meant the guys took them everywhere anyone on a “real” ADV went. And even farther, actually, thanks to the fact that Zack and Ari were able to hoist their rides over a downed tree that would have been a definite roadblock for a 600-pound bike.
Does off-road scootering have a future? If this episode of On Two Wheels is any indicator, it certainly does. And Honda seems to think the concept has legs as well, given the fact that it saw fit to mate long-travel suspension and spoke wheels to a CVT transmission and step-through chassis to make the X-ADV adventure scooter.

I can vouch for the 49cc Ruckus. Did a 5,700 mile trip through the northeast USA and Canada. Most nights just bounced down a logging road to camp. The look on people’s faces when they saw a Missouri license plate on a scooter in Quebec City. Great machine.

He's obviously faking it. These scooters are not underpowered like that. Unless the camera angle was made to make it look not that bad there is no way it would not be able to take them up that hill. I've rode mine up VERY steep hills and yes it will go slower but it will go.

@@ChoLovingVampire They're at high altitude though, also from experience my Zuma didn't climb hills as well as it did when it had a bunch of k's on it and the clutch had bedded in right.

But the old school isn’t limited with speed like these 2, it can reach a top speed of 50 mph full power with no mods, and i get a 90miles per tank (1.5 gals)... great video it brings memories back!

I had a Kymco Super 8 150 that i bought brand new in 2012. I loved that scooter. I eventually removed the side stand and moved the battery into the under seat compartment. Even with the tires from the factory it was a beast in the mud and dirt. It was so light that I could just pick it up over trees or rocks and with the battery moved it had plenty of ground clearance. It was even better than my DRZ400s and much more fun. Scooters are the way to go if you never want to go over 55 mph.

This is nothing. In '86 I rode a Honda Spree from S.L.C., Utah to Paradise, CA... on the highway! Saw only one cop the entire distance. He stopped me, said I was nutz and let me continue. The cop took a photo for me. If I could post it here I would as proof. I sold the Spree and got a Honda MB 5 which I drove, also on hwy, from Paradise down to Ensenada, Baja, Mexico. 33 years later I'm now on another Honda. A Shadow Sabre 1100! Lots quicker! ;)

A few years back I rode a bone stock 50cc Ruckus 7,330 miles across the US and Mexico. Solo. It took me three months and was the adventure of a lifetime. I camped most of the way. The Ruckus was bomb-proof. I started in Pennsylvania and rode into Mexico...then from Mexico to California. The goal was a 10,000 mile heart shaped route spanning Canada, US, and Mexico. I got hit by an RV in California and broke my arm...then proceeded to ride for 3 more days with the broken bone. In the end, the pain was so intense I rode myself to an ER and the x-ray confirmed the Journey was over. Was it worth the broken arm? HELL YES.

Awsome video. From bald mountain to dinkey creek. Then to China peak. That a crazy long loop. Bald mountain watch tower is alway a plus.

That was a damn fun episode. Lifting the scoots over the first log but getting defeated by the second log, so much unexpected drama :P

That's the coolest, most appropriate little JDM support/transport truck at the end of the video. It looks like it's got good ground clearance, too...
