2017 Honda CRF250 Rally Review

2017 Honda CRF250 Rally Review
As a long term owner of the "standard" Honda CRF 250L I was very interested to see when Honda released the slightly more Dakaresque "Rally" version at the end of last year. At last I have been able to get a ride on one of these machines, and in this video I look at how the bike stacks up against it's CRF 250L older brother as well as in it's own right....stay tuned!
Many thanks to HGB Motorcycles in Ruislip for making this review possible, check 'em out at www.hgbmotorcycles.co.uk/

I noticed on the forums that there's an 'Africa Single' logo sticker that's been made for it by some industrious types. The more I look at this the more I like it. I've been and had a look at the Himalayan and it appeals very much but I reckon this bike with a similar power output will be more reliable. I tried the taller heavier bikes and whilst the height wasn't too much of a problem, the weight when combined with height certainly put me right off. Consequently a lighter bike like this is more likely the way I'll go especially as a high powered bike isn't really all that important to me. I haven't ruled out the 'L' either. A dual sport bike just makes sense for me right now especially now I live out in the sticks. I do think they missed a trick with the lights, two stacked vertically would have been far more 'Dakar' than the wonky gas mask replica, but having said that, it's quirky and that's generally OK by me! It's testament to the quality that you found very little to criticise. I'm sure the untidy brake cable loop is a function of the long throw suspension and the way it's routed down the fork leg. Stick on a rear rack and a Giant Loop Coyote bag and the world is your smoked herring. Certainly, the trails of the North Yorkshire Moors and Northumberland that are right on my doorstep beckon strongly!

This is the best review of the Rally on KZread. I purchased one after watching this, and I have to say I'm very happy with it. Power is fine, just have to keep the revs up a bit (around the 5000-8000 RPM range ) and she fair flies. I did find the gap from 1st to 2 nd gear a little tall (for trail riding that is) so I fitted a 13 tooth front sprocket. That changed the performance dramatically! Now it fair hammers and second gear is very usable in the tricky stuff. Revs bumped up another 500 RPM at highway speed (100 kph) to 6500 Rpm, so not revving too hard, and has plenty in reserve if needed. Great review, and great mini adventure bikes.

I have been looking at numerous reviews as I am looking at purchasing a new motorbike (dual purpose) after selling my Yamaha XT600E a couple of years ago. Your reviews have been extremely helpful into narrowing my choices down to 2.....the Honda CRF250 Rally or the KTM 390 Adventure!!! Both seem like perfect options for what I'm looking for but am leaning a bit towards the KTM but need to do a bit more homework with regard to service spares and back up service here in South Africa. Keep up with your excellent reviews...!!!

I just bought a near new condition 2918 in black over silver. So far in love with it, but the suspension will be upgraded. I've had several big bore dual sporters but happy to slow down a bit now at 55yo. Very comfortable, just enough squirt, great road manners and pretty capable off road out of the box. Some knobbies and stiffer springs will make it great.

Also worth mentioning the petrol tank cap that is the "normal" big bike kind of kit. Nothing wrong with the L or M cap which s in chrome and styled differently but some off-roaders complain for some reason. Wish Honda will make an upgrade kit for us L or M owners with the bigger capacity tank and maybe a performance kit to get it to the new engine performance. I was hoping they'll make this a 300 to say the truth. Could have been easily done since they have the cbr with a 300 already.

Own one of this, my first bike ever and actually trading it for the regular 250L. Where my buddies and I ride, its mostly rough trails and man, those fenders are weak on the Rally (don't DROP IT!) and shes an heavy lady with also an higher center of gravity! After 5000km in one season on it wich 4000 of it were offroads, I can answer pretty much all questions about it if anyone has some! And I must say, more offroad capable you say? Gneh, really not sure about that one...! Its a great bike for sure but not the good one for my actuals needs. I've brought it in places it has never been designed for. + 330km range (easily achievable) + nice look + comfortable seat position + those headlights make you really highly visible on the streets + winshield really useful during windy/chilly days + higher ground clearance than the standard L -- have to be gentle with the bike and make sure to never drop it in rought trail (fenders are too weak) -- stock tires are ''off road looking'', nothing more -- seating position not agressive enough for trail riding -- bike is quite heavy for offroad riding

Went for a test ride last month, it's an ideal bike for beginner riders for pretty much any terrain (easy to handle, very forgiving throttle response), lightweight, nimble even with a heavy rider, comfortable. Seat height is great for persons with average height (the suspension compresses nicely). Great for commuting. Things I didn't like: lack of gear indicator, the side compartment is flimsy (it popped open when I mounted the bike), budget side stand. Very positive experience overall.

They need to make a 600 class bike that is still light and agile. Couldn't replace my ccm644 with one though. The Honda weighs around the same with half the power and lower spec suspension. I fitted a 25 ltr tank and upgraded the seat a little for longer trips. Just need to sort a screen now. Keep up the vids👍

Interesting review Mr Flyer Sir. Would you make similar mods for the exhaust and power output as you did on your 250l, or do you feel the improvements to the rally model are enough to rule them out. I fancy a small second bike for the winter and the 250l, or the rally may be ideal.

  • @TheMissendenFlyer

+Mash M Actually no I wouldn’t, the Rally felt as fast as my L as stock - I may add an exhaust but that would only be a vanity thing to make it louder, power wise the Rally is all there out of the box.

After watching your videos/reviews for a few years now, I notice you do seem to have a thing about white van drivers, I am a white van driver, I am also a white CB1100 rider and a Honda CRV driver (the family car). I also used to be a subscriber to your channel and stumbled across this review, merely because I am interesting in purchasing the 2018 version of this bike, I enjoyed watching your review of the bike and it has helped me further in deciding whether to continue with my purchase, so I thank you for that, but I don't understand your comments about white van drivers, I guess us bikers (you included) also get our fair share of negativity from other road users. Anyway, thanks for your review of the bike. Kind Regards, Paul from the UK.

I took this bike out again today for a final ride before I decided to buy it or not, it was a not for me decided it was not for me due to the lack of go in the thing. A surprise of the day was then taking the Honda 500x out which turned out to be a peach of a bike with lots of go where you needed it. Green lanes on this would be easy with a set of suitable tyres they are used by the Honda off road academy for the beginners. So what to choose🤔 got to check the new Benelli TRK502 out tomorrow . You really have to look at this bike and what you get for the money. Check it out.

I think it’d be a great bike for me. I don’t give a tinker’s cuss about styling. When you’re in the mountains of Mongolia, where I live, it’d be the most stylish bike for thousands of kilometres. At the moment, I ride a Honda Transalp 600v which is a bit heavy and cumbersome for serious off roading but it’s probably nicer for long road riding between mountain ranges.

It's nice that they improved the exhaust make it lighter and sounding better, a bigger fuel tank, ABS, and a nice dash with a tachometer. BUT...they made it taller and heavier, not nice for me on offroad situations. and in full honesty there's too much plastic to break from a fall offroad too. and a plastic skidplate??...nah If it would be me I would still get the standard CRF250L ABS and spend the rest of the money for a proper rear shock and a front spring. great review BTW. The review I've been waiting for :) Glad you liked it. Just for clarification: would you recommend spending the extra bit of cash (a bit more than just a bit actually, when we're talking about this end of the market, 14,62% more to be exact) for a Rally instead of an L? Also, would you yourself trade in your L for a Rally (with paying the difference)? And most importantly: would you say it's worth getting the Rally instead of a considerably cheaper option of getting a used L? I know, tough questions :) So I'll throw one easier in because I'm nice like that: have you had any issues with the seat height and stability when stopping? Think you could have a problem with it on rough offroad terrain? Thanks for making these videos btw, I wouldn't get mad if you decide to skip answering these questions, you already make the youtube motorcycling community much more informative :) Cheers!

Hi Leuff always good to talk to you! To take your questions directly..."would you recommend spending the extra bit of cash" - Yes, definitely worth it. " would you yourself trade in your L for a Rally (with paying the difference)" - No, the differences aren't huge enough now I've heavily modded my "L" to make paying the extra worthwhile. " would you say it's worth getting the Rally instead of a considerably cheaper option of getting a used L?" - if you can afford it then yes, the Rally is a much better bike all round, I was very surprised how much I liked it more than the "L". "have you had any issues with the seat height and stability when stopping? Think you could have a problem with it on rough offroad terrain?" - No I've not had any serious issues, I'd be lying to say it wouldn't be better if the seat was an inch lower, but if I was that concerned I would get it lowered (not hard on these to swap out or mod the "dog bone" suspension link).....and thanks for the kind words - all the best - TMF
