2017 Giant Trance 1 Review

Спорт

My first impressions of the Giant Trance 1. This is the aluminium frame in XT Spec. I didn't realise until the end of the video that the bike had carbon wheels. They truly do make a noticeable difference to the way a mountain bike rides.
I didn't do any research on the bike beforehand. This is just a realistic first impression of the bike. I also filmed the Anthem and Reign on the same day and those videos will be uploaded shortly. Enjoy!

For those interested in buying this bike, it is an awesome machine. As he said in the video wheels are definitely a highlight. The full xt drivetrain is awesome too. I changed the bar stem and saddle and tha's all. Went with a 50mm Thomson X4 stem and a renthal fatbar 780mm bar up front and the steering is definitely better now. I found that my rear shock felt stiff like reviewer mentioned in the video. I later found out you need to cycle the shock up and down as you add air to equalise both sides of the chamber. Much better now.

Andrew Tolmie Great comment, I've heard the 2018 Trance has a softer setup on the rear. Hoping to get hold of one very soon. 👍

Great job! I've made a review of the Trance Advanced 0 and it's interesting to see your opinions on this model and the differences between the two specs.

Just picked up my New GiaNT - Trance 1 in the '19 model yr today! Walked away from Specialized. Gave my '2000 Rockhopper Comp A1 to my Son as his entry into the game. Loving my choice after comparing Trance 1 to the very respectable S Stumpy option. Looking forward to my journey! 👉🏽Giant Trance 1 w/ Rock shox front & back 120mm. Plenty Gooood for me! Imo

Great vids! Subscribed :) Quick question. I'm looking for my first full susp bike. Is the Trance much slower (harder) to pedal around town compering with Anthem? Every now and then I have to pedal into the town and would like to keep up with my brother who's got Cube carbon hardtail. Or the Anthem is really just worth getting if someone is planning on doing XC races or something? Cheers

Edgar Klava thanks man. I would go for the Trance all day long. It pedals just as well as the Anthem in my opinion. The suspension has 3 settings front and rear. Stick it in the harder setting, pump your tyres up to 40 psi for the roads and you'll be a flying rocket 😀 when you are off road the trance is miles and miles better. Make sure you let your tyres down again though 👍

great review, I have mine on the way now ! I'd love to know what camera setup you have ? Is it a simple chest mount for a GoPro or do you have a gimbal ?

Thanks, great choice, you'll love the bike. I use a simple chest mount with a Zhiyun Rider M gimbal and a GoPro Hero 4 silver. It all seems to be working very well together so far.

How would you compare this bike to your stumpjumper, I am after my first full suss after a season on a hard tail. I am a former roadie. I want either the stumpie in 29 flavour, giving me the chance to have essentially two bikes when I get a set of plus tyres and wheels, or the trance. I would be be getting either in alloy, I prefer alloy bikes. My trails are mountainous which require loads of technical climbing and descending. Many thanks great channel.

Good question and a tough one to answer. I honestly would be happy with either bike but it's difficult to explain why I think the Stumpy is the better bike. The Stumpy just feels like the complete package. If you want both 29 and plus then you only have one choice I guess. It could be to do with sizing. I've only ridden Trances that are probably a bit small for me as they are demo bikes. My Stumpy is an XL but I also rode the large which didn't feel good at all. Always demo if you can even if it costs. Every time I get on a 29er after riding 27.5 wheels I'm amazed how good they feel. Sorry if this doesn't help much. The Stumpy just feels so good to ride and I can't pin point why exactly, it climbs effortlessly and ploughs through everything I throw at it. Thanks man

Its about an hour and a half south of Perth. Only really one trail that takes half hour to ride that's not too exciting. There's a place slightly closer called Turner Hill that's much better. I've got a couple of trail reviews on both coming out soon :)

Hi Leigh, I just bought the Trance 1 (not advanced) as a) my LBS had an ex demo up for grabs - and b) I am not sure if the carbon was worth it for me. Anyway thanks for the review.

Thanks Leigh, had it for just a month now and I am trying to come to terms with coming from a 3 x 9 with 26 inch wheels, wide bars and a dropper seat! Had my Camber for over four years so this will take time. But I am intrigued -people say the Giants have narrow bars? Mine feel soooo wide! But I got to say riding today in the snow/ice (not much left but can catch you out) it's a real confidence booster. FYI my only gripe is the dropper seat cable came dislodged at the seat end so I had to take a crash course in learning to re-thread into eyelet but all good now. I moved the handlebar lever as it was totally in wrong place for me.

I've been out on a few rides and I must say I am impressed so far. I don't know if it's because it is a fair bit lighter than my previous bike but the Trance just wants to fling itself down, around and off everything! It's a very eager feeling bike, it just wants to GO! The only thing I didn't like was the stock dropper lever, it broke immediately and, long story short, I had to cut it off with a hacksaw.

Great stuff. I think the carbon wheels make such a difference to the way the thing accelerates. I agree with you on the dropper lever, i hated it. Thanks for letting me know, love it!

hi. Planning to buy a new bike. choosing between the devinci troy, norco sight, and giant trance. just wondering if the trance is "poppy and playful" though it has a relatively long chainstay.

oh and after watching the whole video you mentioned that it was quiet poppy but if you are to compare it to the given bikes what do you think would be the best for me?

Doge Doug It is a poppy fun bike. I haven't ridden the other two bikes you mentioned so I couldn't really answer your question sorry. Can you demo them at all? The 2018 giants will be out soon which will make this bike a lot cheaper and an absolute bargain.

I've got a custom Trance SX (160/140 travel). It's pretty burly now and I'd say it's more on the stable end. However, I have made a review of the 2017 Advanced 0. It's more playful, but it's limited in certain ways.

Seems like the Trance is a fair bit lighter than many carbon bikes out there, only 12.3kg.
