2017 Equinox Radio Not Working But A New Tool Saved The Day!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

These 2017 Equinox Radios appear to have a known failure to them and the repair cost was kinda shocking. I just happened to receive a new tool from TOPDON that helped me fix this Equinox for a fraction of the cost.

Brilliant work. I like to think this extra step is required to make it difficult to falsify VIN data, but the fact that it sends clients back to dealerships to replace a simple radio is suspicious. Crooks everywhere, ha ha.

I spoke with topdon about file editing on scan tool and they are not even thinking about that feature for now, and the funny thing is the new autel im608II stoped having that hex edit feature also, wonder why autel got rid of hex edit on the new tool. This is good stuff. Thanks for showing something very valuable especially when new parts are hard to come by in reasonable means. I have had very good luck fixing the standard radios in the Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep when the Radio Volume doesn't work or it skips channels. Its the little chip in the top right corner of the board where the antena plugs in. A light re-flow work and its back to working order. No security pins to deal with.

I had to reflash all modules & replace the radio with a new one, hopefully this will not be the case in your situation. You see videos where someone is claiming every scan tool on the market is the best to the point I have no idea which one to buy. You need to go into your windows download options and click "always ask" -- so anytime you download something, you have to pick the file path yourself, rather than it happening automatically. That way you can organize where you want to put it at the time of download; rather than having to go find it and move it around after the fact. At least that's what I always do.... I would think there's a way to do it in the scantool also, being that it's probably android based. It's pretty weird that the Topdon has a "thinkcar" file. Thinkcar, thinkdiag, Thinktool Pro are all Launch scanners I believe. So to see their name in Topdon's software, it just shows how much they've either copied the software or are licensed users of it. etc. Not sure how that works, but it would be nice to know the distinction. Is Topdon just using their software and putting it into better hardware? Or are they just using it as a base and then adding more software to it? I wish they would answer these kind of questions, but this stuff is always kept secret for some reason.

I've swapped radios in my Cruze (another GM "global" car with a "silver box" radio). I was able to mess with the eprom with just $15 worth of parts from eBay. (Details in Cruzetalk forum). Note that you don't have to program in the VIN, just wipe the old VIN out. It will reprogram itself to the first car it's installed in. Also note that the eprom also contains station presets (probably where "fox and friends" comes from) as well as EQ settings (premium vs. non-premium sound). As such, you're probably better off copying the whole eprom. Otherwise, you have to make sure to get a radio from another car with the same RPO codes. (I ended up copying the whole eprom as the radio sounded like garbage with the wrong "tune" for the audio.) As it is, my radio sets codes because it can't talk to an external amplifier that my car doesn't have. But unless someone is looking with an advanced scanner, it's not a problem. It ranks right up there with codes set because I swapped my brake lights for LED.

  • @russellhltn1396

Come to think about it, you probably need to match sound system RPO codes anyway. If you tried to put a non-premium sound radio into a premium sound car, the radio probably wouldn't talk to the amp.

Friends don't let friends use the Mac 😇. There might be different programs (new version) running on the MCUs which would explain the coding differences. I don't think it makes a tut of a difference. As long as the VIN number is changed the whole thing should work. If the difference ends up being an issue, you can desolder the Bios from the donor and replace the one on the recipient radio with the one from the donor. The programming tool I have gives an indication if the clamp is contacting correctly. Those clamps are really picky. And watch out for pin #1. Beyond Compare is the bomb!! We use it at Microsoft all the time.

Seems to me, the fair and only correction for this known defect, should have been lifetime warranty to the end- user paid by GM corp.. i do not consider simply compiling repair instructions that say" replace head unit" is honorable..considering that gm charged 32,000 dollars for that product. Anotherwards, gm knew an entire model years worth of mpus, and processors were garbage to begin with. Gm toyota and others bankrupted takata air bag corp..why dont they back us up even more and sue the pants off that semiconductor, or circuit board manufacturer.
