    Lol it's funny how this comment is from 6 years ago, and we are still at the same prices if not more for roughly the same amount of range in electric cars, not much advancement unfortunately. I thought we'd have solid state batteries by this time, but I think that's another 10 years down the road.

    Been driving a Bolt EV Premier since October, almost exclusively using it for ride-share and have been pushing this car to the limits in the Bay Area. Just crossed the 10k mileage benchmark and It feels as solid today as the day I picked it up. So far I’ve had to replace a tire I blew out, and found it in stock a mere two blocks from the location it happened, costing me a whopping $130 to get back on the road. This car is a beast; eats the steepest hills for breakfast and it’s passing maneuverability in freeway traffic is unreal. Has a better turn radius and center of gravity than my 5 year old 330i. Until the other shoe drops... I still can’t believe it’s a Chevy.

    I have drove only a few EV's in my time - once long time ago, converted EV but cant remember what it was, test drove the Kia Soul EV last spring and more recently this past fall the Bolt. I was impressed with Soul EV but did not like the low range. Looking at the overall ride quality and experience to compare to Gas cars - not looking at the range comparison, I was very pleased with the bolt, ride quality was great compared to the 4U Soul we have now. It is 7 yrs old which we have been very pleased with and looking to replace it and I think the Bolt will do a fine job. With some planning it will take us to all the places we used the Soul to go to. Mostly for the wife to work and and back and all the short trips we do. Our longest trip being 200km one way so charging when we get there will do the job. Even in winter based on the reports I have seen on needing to run the heater getting 250km on the highway. I am in no way up to date on all the facts but I think Chevy has done a good job bringing this product to market in the price range they have and I am surprised others of the larger groups did not do a longer range EV, like Nissan Leaf with there 2nd gen, I would be looking at it if it would do my needed 250km winter trip in one charge. Not putting by money on a Tesla, just too long a wait time. I am no Chevy lover - just someone looking for a practical car that is clean to run a getting me to where I need to go in my travels and saves me money to do it. Best Wishes to all in this New Year

    I was so excited for this car and loved everything about it until I sat in it. The seats were so terribly uncomfortable that I couldn't sit in it for 10 minutes let alone survive it through my 2 hour commute. Maybe when they start using the bolt as a "platform" for other EV's, one of them will be reasonably comfortable.

    Excellent video, I liked the humor and pacing! I'm tempted by these cars. I have a friend who drives/leases a Volt and loves it. He says the quality is as good as Toyota. It does seem like a car one might want to lease, rather than buy. An ICE car you could buy and drive up to twenty years with normal maintenance, these electrics don't have that track record. My Corrolla is 26 years old and still running awesome. If these come down a bit, they will be very tempting.

    If you have an EVSE (Level II charger) at home, then you'll never need to fast charge, since all the charging is being done when you're asleep. I've had my Chevy Bolt now for 7 months, and I just plug it in every night, and wake up and it's full of juice, ready to go 250 miles a day, if need be, but I'll never need to go 250 miles, so it's a moot point. The whole "Charging network" thing is really useless to me.

Yes you are paying less for it after the four year lease, but I don’t think the guy who paid $259 a month and drive a brand new car was doing too bad either.

    @@ryavco Eh, Bolts seem to be holding up pretty well. The oldest and most thrashed examples (owner was doing deep discharging and frequent rapid charging) are at about 8% degradation. One that sees normal use probably would only see 3-5% at 100,000 km. I think even high mileage examples that were well treated will probably still have more than 80% of their capacity. While some degradation is inevitable, it's likely that the batteries will outlive the useful life of the car in general.

    The whole tax credit is a bit of fool's gold as it does not necessarily apply if you don't owe that much in taxes. As far as other incentives go, it all depends on which state you live in. It would be fair to just say that the price is 37k and maybe you can offset that with a tax credit.

    Laura Bodycombe the car will be sold nationwide starting in September. However there are several dealerships that have bought Bolts from California to sell, for example I live in Utah and one dealership got hold of 12 Bolts. So check your local dealerships websites if you are interested, you might get lucky and find one with some on hand. When you check the websites look under SUV as GM classifies the Bolt as a crossover, that is where the car was listed on my local dealerships website.

    Funny thing about the seats... Lots of people complain about the seats and the interior. Having driven over a dozen now at an automotive auction in the course of two days, I must say that while the plastic does very much feel like typical GM meh, the fit/finish is fairly well done. Seams are even and small, mothing creaks or rattles, and it all feels at least assembled well, although from poor materials. And the seats. They are thin, but they seem relatively comfortable to me. Granted, I take the time to ajust the seat to fit properly, but they do a decent job. Would I road trip this car? No. I have an old Grand Marquis and a minivan for that. Would I commute in it? Yeah, yeah I would. Not sure where everyone is grabbing at this "the seats are garbage" thing from... And, yes, been in them for longer than two minutes. Drove most of them in the auction lanes. Sitting in long lines and waiting for your turn at the block take a while.

    sask squatch the general limitations for EVs in cold climates are first the regenerative braking will be diminished until the battery warms up, the car MIGHT have diminished power output until the battery warms up (this would require VERY cold conditions to be noticeable), the battery will lose more power if overnight if not plugged in, and the batteries max range will.drop until the battery warms up.

    So considering the reputation of GM / Opel ( as it comes out with the rather boring name Ampera-E in Germany )....should you still buy one? And will Opel actually still sell them when they are taken over by the french? So many choices but those prices are really putting those cars far from being cost effective.

  • @davetravels9273

    @davetravels9273

    Agreed, it is a bit too expensive for what it is (even if GM is losing money on each one), especially in Germany. The one I would be interested in is 42k Euro or 38K Euro after incentives! Also, we drive even less in Germany and this car is not practical for longer trips, so I would much rather get the more efficient and cheaper Hyundai Ioniq. The refreshed e-Golf uses too much energy, maybe the next one. For now, I will stick with diesel, but in three years maybe the choices will be better. Oh and the new Leaf comes out in September...

    This won't be changing much if you consider that the Nissan Leaf has been out for 7 years and they "only" increased battery capacity to 30kwh and refined the vehicle in the meantime. This is the current technological standard for current "mass production" EVs with the next step being 45-60khw at the same price if not higher. They should think more about range extended models like the i3 with 100km EV range instead of going 400km fully electric for now. No normal person can afford those cars and 100 km for daily commute and chores is more than enough. I do 30k a day tops and it has been proven that people don't drive much more and a range extender can fight range anxiety. Hybrids show that it works but you have to carry a lot of weigh since they are mostly full sized engines plus batteries.

  • @dansanger5340

    @dansanger5340

    Nissan Leaf doesn't manage battery temperature like most other EVs do, which has led to premature degradation of battery capacity. Considering that the battery is the most expensive part of an EV, I wouldn't consider a new Leaf until they fix that shortcoming.

    I wouldn't either but not because of what you just mentioned but because of the warranty time. The tech seems to have been working good enough so far though.

    Depends on the feature set. If it has DC fast charging and a Premier, its an awesome deal, if an LT Trim. Make sure it has the fast charging and some of the other packages.

    I recently drove it and loved it... Now it's pretty ugly and you are better off using your smart phone navigation..lane departure was confusing and seats are narrow, unforgivable given that there are at least 2 inches of gap to the door. They are very comfortable thugh. the interior feels modern and pleasant... Trunk space is small, no spare as its standard with Evs. There is plenty of head room, maybe too much, so it could have been sportier and less of a brick without sacrificing interior usable head room. I'd say Bolt's price point will have to be significantly lower if GM wants to sell any when the Model 3 is in full production. Nice review btw.

    Yes It will cost a little, but the Tesla Modle 3 will come with super charging as standard. On the Bolt, quick charging in not standard. There aren't even that many quick chargers for the Bolt to begin with.

    Cutsie valueless comments aside, the reviewer tried very hard to not be too positive. Five foot ten inches with two inches of spiked hair in the back seat? Come on! I agree with the, no doubt, Consumer Reports-inspired front headrest position, but at least we didn't have to hear about the vaporware to be called Model 3 thank you very much.

    my everyday driver get 30+ mpg even in the city for cheaper and runs on gas. charging station are not everywhere and I can make a 400 mile trip if I don't abuse the gas. This bolt can make that claim it is to limited in range. I'll wait for the tech to mature.

    as a clean sheet design why keep this FWD?

  • @717dash_cam

    @717dash_cam

    Because GM has this thing about only giving AWD to cars of the Buick and Cadillac families. Throw in additional potential weight and output needed for AWD and your range is easily back under 200 miles ideal driving, much less if you are more spirited with the throttle or in mountainous terrain. They would have to seriously increase the battery size and capacity, which would likely push the price take closer to 50 before not so guaranteed tax rebates.. for a car that will "sell" in minuscule numbers, it just wouldn't have been worth it. In my area I have seen 3 Chevy volts, maybe 2 Nissan leafs, a few Model S, an i3 and an i8 over the course of the time the leaf and volt have been on the market, and I'm in a city.

    So I can get a leaf with all that premium stuff you mentioned for less than 30 000€ whereas I'd have to pay about 40 000€ to have those features in Bolt. I think I'll go with Leaf.
