    After 51k miles on the original battery on my 2015 GSA I started feeling the battery having hiccups especially in colder temps and finally shelled out the $215 for the OEM BMW battery. I was dreading pulling out the battery due to several items connected to it but it was absolute breeze after watching this video. Thanks for posting that

    It does not matter whether the battery was made in 16 or 17. The BMW batteries carry a two year warranty on the battery. The key thing to note is that the warranty starts when battery is sold or when a new bike is put into service. Not when the battery was manufactured!

    My #1 tip if replacing a full size battery, is to take note of the correct routing of the rear positive cable. The slack, to allow the battery to be pulled out goes down the back of the battery, even though it doesn't look like there is room. If you get any of the cable on top of the battery, then you cannot lift the battery enough to get the tab and pin of the outer cover in place. I noticed in the video, someone had trimmed the cover pin length in the past because of having difficulties getting it back in place. If the wire is down the back as it should be, with the terminal connector angled at about 3 o'clock towards the right hand rear corner of the battery, that cover goes back on so easily, if the battery won't lift up because you have some cable between the battery and the top of the battery box, then you will be very frustrated and wonder how the cover can possibly ever fit.

    @@FranksBmwAdv Modified, or not that pin on the bottom of the cover is half the length of mine for some reason, therefore easier to fit. The video helped me see what the problem with mine was, which helped me get it sorted, once the +ve cable was in the correct position, along with the terminal orientation, it went together really easily. It's strange your original battery was the shorter one and an older unit, but my 2017.5 had 3/2018 labelled full size battery in it from when I got it brand new in May 2018, I suspect the dealer had swapped it out, or something before I picked mine up. It appears either way the BMW battery is only good for about 4 years. I was pleased to see I'm not the only one that has trouble with those pesky grommets, every time I remove some panels and refit, one of them seems to escape at some point despite my best efforts. :) Thanks for the video, I've worked on a lot of bikes over 46 years of riding, but these videos save a lot of time figuring things out as all machines are different and there's usually a moment when it's not obvious how something comes off, or how it goes back, with a good video, your first time, is like doing it a second time which always goes quicker and easier.

    guess it would depend on how much it draws in power and you might need to use a relay might be needed if you're going to be using a switch to turn it on and off. For me the jacket and powered bag are direct to battery and are fused at the positive terminal.

    Thanks Frank, I honestly wasn’t positive about the location of the batt. on my 2017 GSA! (Yep, another Dad joke, “positive” comment on a battery video! +1 point for me, right) 😂. Also what top 2-3 mods did you do yourself that you couldn’t do without? I’m thinking I should install a USB charger for my iphone since I just have it on all the time when I ride. Even if just to see where the traffic is building up on my route. Did you mention you have a jacket and tank bag that are connected to your battery? Did you buy kits for those? And which jacket and tank bag do you use or recommend? …and would you recommend a newer version? Sorry for the 20-questions. Thanks again!

    Good Video. I need to change the Battery on my 2016 RT1200. Can I go ahead with out affecting the bikes computer? If I disconnect the existing battery it won't affect any of the electrics on the bike?

  • @FranksBmwAdv

    @FranksBmwAdv

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, my personal opinion is that car dealers and bike dealers will tell you it can only be done at the shop due to the chance of loss of data. I call Bullshit on that. Obviously, I'm not saying or guarantying you won't have an issue, I guess it depends on the bike. There are ways to jumper power to your system while changing the battery so power is always present at the computer, on cars they use ODB connection that keeps the car powered while changing, I have changed over ten batteries on bikes and newer cars without an issue. Use Extreme caution not to cross wires positive and negative, now that would be a major issue! Ride safe!
