2017-2019 HONDA AFRICA TWIN - STARTER SWITCH FIX

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've had my 2017 model year Africa Twin since 2019 and it has done a total of 11000 miles , mostly dry. Here's a 15 minute fix to get rid of your starter button issues.
There is a known fault, which is not subject of a re-call by Honda. Basically the starter button unit, over a period of time, has bits of Carbon inside the switch, causing" arcing " of the contacts when you press the starter button. This causes the engine to start and almost stop immediately when you go to start it . Sometimes you can rev it to 6000 rpm to keep the motor spinning, but not ideal.
Various Honda AT forums say its a simple fix and it is!!!. It will take about 15 minutes to split the switch and give it a clean. I used a combination of blown air, brake cleaner and good old ACF50.
Put it back together and starts like a dream. We are December now and the bike did the start stop problem right on" q" for the video, before i attempted the fix as per the Honda Forums.
The switch is pretty robust, BUT just be aware of the power feed cables to the Red starter switch and don't pull on the unit too aggressively or else you could snap these wires.
I am no qualified mechanic so please don't slate me too much. It certainly has worked for me this quick fix.
It really is a simple job that any of you can do.
Ride safe.

Thank you for your useful video. I have 2016 AT and had the same problem. One of my friends did a similar cleaning but he also dismantle the red switch and used some lithium grease to prevent from corosion. On the other hand, when I switch off the bike (mine is DCT) first put it to neutral and then ignition off from the red button then back to normal position of the red button. You will hear the fuel pump feading the hoses for next start, then turn the ignition key off. This works much better. I hope the info will be helpfull.

Brilliant, thank you. My 2016 AT owned from new, just 5000 miles, been playing up for months. Thought it was the cold !! Today, total failure in the middle of nowhere, only starting after 'fidleing' blindly with it. Found and followed your video and 🤞 instant 100% improvement. Hope that's it for now. Thanks again 👍. ****9 June 2024 Update ****- I used electical contact cleaner when the problem started again. Seems if water gets in the switch the contacts suffer 'white corrosion'. I found using ACF or WD40 attracts dust and grime, causing contact issues again. Hope this helps.

I took a ride to Mexico this winter after trailering from Minnesota to Big bend national Park in South Texas. On the way back it rained from Texas to Iowa and then snowed the rest of the way home on an open trailer. After setting for a month my bike developed the same problem

2017 AT 1000 4190 miles 6 Speed. Jumping in here to ask for help. I recently purchased this bike, it's in impeccable condition, couldn't ask for a cleaner machine. That being said, I started the bike this morning to let it warm up, while I'm putting on my jacket and helmet the engine stops and will not start, it was at idle maybe 4-5 minutes. Battery is strong, display lights up, headlight is strong but nothing when I press the starter button. I'm at a loss, completely baffled, I disconnected the battery cable to hopefully "Reset" any settings but still nothing. If the "Starter Switch" is corroded or bad, would the engine quit running?

Hi Mark . When I had my AT the signs of the starter switch being in need of a clean were …… difficult to start and when it did you had to rev it to keep it from stalling , I was putting my helmet on during this time and then when I was about to set off the bike would stop …. Eventually it just wouldn’t start … hence a KZread search !!!! I’m not a mechanic but I would give the switch a clean like the video as it only takes 10 minutes .

Following up on my 17 AT. Being new to the bike I didn't realize when you turn the key switch to "On" the fuel pump primes and a few other noises occur. It was not doing this and should have been. What I thought was a corroded on/off switch turned out to be a bad fuse in the "Eng Stop" circuit under the seat. My friend and I both checked the fuses but it wasn't until the fuses were checked with a Circuit Tester that we figured it out. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. Bike runs great, enjoying every minute!
