Yeah. When I look at Sakamoto san performing here, I can tell that he’s thinking of David... it’s quite beautiful and ironic that a film depicting the little seed of friendship struck between members of these two nations formally at war is actualized through Ryuichi and David’s friendship and respect for one another.

I have wept bucket loads over many years and I still do now. The last scene when Tom Conti visits Sgt Hara in prison. The last words 'Mr Lawrence, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence '

I don’t remember the ending … I just remember bawling my eyes out over 25 years ago.I can’t watch it again. Love the theme song though.
He's a master of leitmotifs. It's just one musical sentence, yet Mr. Sakamoto is able to infuse it with such intensity and variety of emotions, just like how the greatest of poets have a thousand lines in store just to say: "I love you."

Buon viaggio Sakamoto-San.
That scene when Celliers kisses Capitain Yonoi is just one of the most beautiful, intense moments I’ve ever seen in a movie. And it’s in a large part thanks to this song.

Rest in peace, maestro.
He is so beautiful, even at this age.
No matter how many variations this song has, it still give me the feeling of sadness and beauty. Such a talented composer. Thank you, Mr. Sakamoto
I have never seen the movie Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and yet this music feels very nostalgic and dear to my heart...
The best ending of this movie, where humanity triumps over war. It always makes me cry! "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence"!
RIP master Ryuichi Sakamoto😪😪😪😪😪😪😪
The movie and the soundtrack to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence has become one of the defining elements of my life. There's also an underlying philosophy to the original story written by Larens Van der Post (aka The Seed and the Sower) that brings equal measures of sadness, peace, and joy.
Rip 😢 David is waiting for you. Thanks for the music ❤️
Literally what it was like to lay down one's life for a brother by kissing the enemy
So beatiful . Favorite song ever!
This is one of favourite songs ever. Also the guy that bangs those two stick things together…that’s the definition of ‘looks easy but really isn’t’. Getting the timing absolutely perfect would be very daunting.

34 years ago, I first heard this beautiful work… in a C64 computer game called International Karate. It used the sid chip and was programmed by Ron Hubbard. It resonated deeply with me and came across as bittersweet. I was 8 at that time. 32 years later… Apple Music shuffled this music in suggestions for me… and I was surprised! I immediately recognised it and of course it all made sense. This was a movie composition! So happy that I discovered this beautiful piece. I still have to watch the film though :-)
It's such a wonderful piece of music - to me, it seems to capture some of tragedy of war; the pointless waste of it all, particularly when thinking of the war with Japan in the Pacific and SE Asia. Sakamoto is such an outstanding composer.
Incredible, rip dear love xxx
On the list of most loved movies this one is right at the top for me, the first time I watched it I was so emotionally touched, I couldn't sleep the night after, hard to ddescribe the intensity of the characters, the beauty of Ryuichi and David, the cruelty of the war, the hidden passion, all of it, sensational and unforgettable! RIP David and strength to Ryuichi in your fight against cancer, we love you and your talent
I’ve never seen the film I just love watching this pianist and orchestra before I go to sleep it’s something very special about him and always plays the piano
What a breathtaking ensemble! ...performed by the genius composer Maestro Sakamoto himself and Brussels artists, it reached the thorugh state of sublime beauty!
It's só Beautiful: you can hear the story, Gongratulations Sakamoto San 🪷
Masterpiece.
Excellence in Beauty. Perfect 4 the as well brillant movie.

Simply Special
I don't see any of this information in the comments below. If this sounds familiar to some people, this song was recorded with David Sylvian under the name of "Forbidden Colors" . David Sylvian wrote the lyrics along with Sakamoto. This was played at the end of the movie during the credits. This was the first time I heard this song. Bowie was very much alive when this was written. At first it sounded like Bowie's voice, but after a moment I knew it had to be Sylvian. (I do miss David Bowie.) If you are not familiar with David Sylvian, you are in for a treat if you research ALL of his music. He has this silvery baritone voice with tremendous skill on pratically every instrument. He was this young blonde beautiful front man for this fantastic progressive Brittish group called "Japan" in the 1980's. From his solo career he collaborated with the likes of Ryuichi, Robert Fripp, Bowie and numerous progressive Masters. His Solo albums are just amazing. He is one of my favorite all time Musician, Composer and Singer. He deserves more credit than he has been given. This song is on David Sylvian's "Songs from the Beehive" along with other incredible songs. The lyrics match the power and sadness of this music. Put together with the movie, it will make you cry. I urge you to check him out.

it was a beautiful and heart warming arrangement of this classic....I could almost hear David Sylvian singing the words forbidden colours in my mind...it made me cry
That was pure and honest magic.
A beautiful soundtrack to a wonderful film. I still remember buying the LP in 1983.
Really emotional piece of composition that identifies two males from two powerful nations who have love for each other but cannot express it during wartorn times. Very powerful.
Breathtaking performance of a breathtaking composition.
Thank you to maestro Ryuichi Sakamoto for amazing song... This song has a deep story behind.... 👏👏👏
my favorite composer. amazing.
I remember I couldn't watch the movie for the second time, because I knew I would cry my eyes out, without fully understanding the emotions of the characters, as a kid 😭. This movie eventually brought me into a decade of mesmerising artists, music and great people. Thanks 😊
Beyond Awesome. It makes one believe Unicorns do exist and Magic is Real. This score transcends time, space, parallel universe and the soul. Thank You for your Genius Master Sakamoto.
Beautiful

Bella, bellissima, meravigliosa.
Gorgeous
I dedicate this melody to my greatest lover Andrew Fortune who died several years ago at the age of 47 discreetly in Thailand...we all loved him for his kindness and honour and courage to fight for life... I have always loved you Andrew...and nobody never replaced your charm and kndness...may this song that you loved be yours for ever....isa...
This voice brings me a deep sense of loneliness, silence, desolation, and wilderness, as well as longing, sadness, calls from far and near.

A powerful film with an amazing soundtrack ! .
教授 ( Kyoju means Professor , Ryuichi Sakamoto called as in Japan ) seems to tribute David Bowie who passed away earlier in 2016.
