Tesla Germany gave me the chance to spend a few days in their top of the range Model S, a fully loaded P90D with 539 hp and the Ludicrous Speed Upgrade. Here's my indepth road test on the autobahn, the beautiful city of Heidelberg and my favourite driving road...

I live in the State of Texas here in the USA, and it makes me angry to know that there is not one single Tesla dealership or charging station in the whole state. It is because Texas's economy is dependent on oil

+rbagel55 You actually got 10 Tesla charging stations, 5 stores, and 4 service centers i Texas. www.teslamotors.com/findus#/bounds/49.38,-66.94,25.82,-124.39?search=store,service,&name=us supercharge.info/

well, its complicated. Tesla only take orders for there cars through there website. The stores they have are showrooms. In states like Texas they aren't allowed to help you buy the car on the website, arrange test drives. uk.businessinsider.com/texas-says-no-to-tesla-2015-5?r=US&IR=T

+rbagel55 You should try and live in my country. Which is also corrupted by the Oil industry. Everything is impossible. Electric Cars is utterly destroyed for the common man here They tax The Tesla to over 100% to almost 300.000$. 100% C02 tax on electric energy and gasolin. Even Windmills gets the Co2 Tax. Electric bikes is only allowed below 250 watts.
All of a sudden, gasoline/diesel based cars seem so dated.

+Cruzer I've been thinking that way when I first sat in a Tesla model S several years ago. I drive my gas car and it is still fun but it really feels antiquated now especially after experiencing a Tesla. I know there will always be petrol heads but its a shame Battery/electric technology has been so demonized. It's amazing tech and though the vids here on the Tesla cars are cool, you really have to sit in one and drive one to really understand the difference.

+ShawJohn31 I don't know any real competition of Tesla as of yet and when other companies will try to compete it will be too late for them, they'll be far behind Tesla. I wish they could make cars for cheap so they could be massively used.

+Cruzer nope, the Volvo XC90 looks great as the S90 also, the XC90 is avaible as plugin-hybrid and the S90 will be shortly avaible as plugin-hybrid. Theres an petrol engine on the front wheel supported by a battery / generator-powered electric motor at the rear wheels.
I cannot even express how jealous I am of driving on the autobahn going that fast. Anything more than 40 kph over the limit in Canada and they will impound your car in a heartbeat. Great and thorough video as always!

@TheGetawayer

+Michael Simpkins No, just because I want more top speed honestly👌👍
A point reviewers often fail to make is that most owners plug the car in at night and wake up with a full battery or whatever the required charge level was set to. So no time wasted at gas stations. Of course road trips can take longer because then you have to charge mid journey but not so much longer since you need to stop for food and bathroom breaks anyway. Unless you do a lot of road trips you will on balance save time in a Tesla against a conventional gasoline or diesel car.

+Dogphlap Price That's true and like I said for normal commuting, there's nothing to critize really. It's just those more extreme scenarios like high speed driving ( forbidden in pretty much all countries ) and long distances drives, where the Tesla has it's down sides. In most countries other than germany, they really don't count :)

Great review Guido! I am really starting to love these Teslas! It was interesting to see how it did on your roads! I still really want to review one too but haven't had any luck as they don't really do press loaners here in the states too much. It's great to hear that it still handles pretty well too, I was worried it would feel heavy in corners. Excited to see what other reviews you have in store for 2016!

+subaruwrxfan I am a tesla owner and used to drive a BMW Z4 which is almost half the weight. Thus, I can tell the difference: you do feel the weight indeed, but it is still so much more fun to drive the Tesla especially on twisting mountain roads. Not sure what the reason for that is, but I guess it has to do with the completely effortless, amazing and instantaneous "shooting out of the corners", it really feels like a fighter jet, not a car. I love this thing! The BMW was completely boring after driving the Tesla which is why I sold that outdated gas guzzler.
The beginning of the end of the internal combustion engine.
I was very tempted to skip ahead to see if you weren't impressed - but I didn't because I knew you would be. To better put things in perspective. Imagine you own a house with solar panels. Imagine your daily commute is no more than a quarter of the range. Imagine you have a simple timer in your garage so that after it's plugged in it charges at the off peak time 11pm to 6am. 'Fuel Cost' ? Negligible. Gas Station visits ? Never. Oil changes ? Never ? Brake Pad or Disc replacement ? Unlikely for a Decade. And they sure are fun ! Why do you think people have so much fun goofing around in Golf Carts ? Great Channel - you and Chris Harris are the two best on KZread !

It is something beautiful to me. The style and the simplicity. The fact that it isn't same old fossil fuel is the most beautiful thing of all, can you imagen not having wars for oil? +TheGetawayer the problem with that is that Tesla is doing changes to the car every week. If you test a Tesla that have driven so long it's probably around two years old and since then Tesla have make a lot of changes. They still have a lot do to come up to BMW, Audi and Mercedes in the same price range but they are working on it.
Just imagine our cities if all the cars were electric, not only would they be far quieter with lack of vehicle noise but the air would be far cleaner and wouldn't stink (something you really notice if you don't live in the city) driving might actually be a relaxing experience!

Test drove a Tesla about 7 months ago. Absolutely amazing car. Doesn't compare to anything else I've ever driven before. It's a completely new experience. Very nice review just subscribed, tesla is the best ^_^
Yesterday I drove a Model S and it was a mind blowing experience. Its as you said even at low Speed in the City. Reasently I saw a Lambo in a 30 kmh Zone in the city and that looks and especially sounds silly. The Tesla is in the City like a flying carpet. I found it a very special experience!
It will not come as a novelty to you but... Yes, an excellent review. In fact, I will be the owner of a 90D (not a P90D...) starting next tuesday, and have been following Tesla for quite some time. Mine will be a post facelift though, unlike the car you tested. I love how you distilled the essential technical aspects of the car right from the beginning (chassis, drivetrain), and your unbiased review as a whole. I just wish that you expanded a little more on the ecological aspects which are more complex than the 10 seconds you allocated to them, but as a whole, I wish I were able to +100 :)
amazing video.

Great video and really glad you reviewed this car -- especially with a more real world commute on the freeway and in city traffic. The autobahn is just a wow, wow for the rest of us to wish for (thanks for doing that!). I love a great sports car with a manual transmission as much as the next car guy, but, like you pointed out, you just can't deny the crazy torque, comfort, quiet, low maintenance, little to know breaking, zero emissions and beautify of the Tesla. And it's really a practical hatchback without looking like one, which is brilliant. Once the cost comes down and range and charging time improve (which is happening pretty quickly) we'll all be driving eCars like this one. My only complaint is that the Model S is a bit too large for me personally and I am looking forward to the Model 3, which at $35 - $40k (U.S.) will be a game changer to the auto industry as we all know. I still may buy a good used Model S when the price drops a bit more, though.

Thanks for the fun review! Completely agree. It feels as if the internal combustion engine is dead after driving this car. It handles great. Great video! We are in the next realm of automotive transportation. Can't help but think the benefit of a small generator built into this cars structure that runs on gasoline or diesel to charge batteries when no superstation is readily available or handy? What an incredible machine it is and love the 0-60 or 100 times! Very impressive! Mr. Musk thanks for stirring the pot!

I like tech and gadgets but I think the art of building a quality interior console is something that needs to be cherished. Digitalizing everything is a bit boring. That matters much more to me than some pointless accelerations ;-)

Just a remark from a seasoned Autobahn driver. You really must check your safety distance (easily calculatable as current speed v/2 in metres). If you go 240km/h, you should keep a distance to the person in front of you of roughly 120m. Working in the field, I've seen many horrible accidents that happened only due to the fact that people were not keeping their distance on the lane. It's not primarily excessive speed that kills you, it's not being observant and not keeping your safety distance. It's tempting to go up close to left-lane-snails, but is it really worth to risk your life? Also, as a side note, if you are going on the left lane quickly and see a pack of 2 cars on the right lane, it's smart to slow down a bit, as this is a standard scenario where the backrunner might change into the left lane (see 7:50, 8:35 roughly). I've also seen many crashes because people often pay no attention. One may be the best driver in the world, but most people on the Autobahn are just not as considerate as the few who are. Stay safe and continue making these great videos!

Great review. Thanks. I have a Boxster S and a GT3 RS. Debating between a Spyder and a Tesla Model S for my daily driver. Hard choice, since your only downside on the Tesla was slow high speed acceleration. But in BC, Canada, won't be an issue! Keep up the great work!

+TheGetawayer I drove one in Vancouver last year and quite liked it. I have three friends with.Model S's. They all love them, but they are not real gear heads. That's why your review was so important. Have you driven a new Spyder yet? Cheers.
Superb +thegetawayer ! Honest comparison between Models S and Luxury petrol cars in Europe. People are now able to make up their own choice. I choose the Tesla ;-)

+Pascal H Thanks Pascal !
Awesome review as I expected. The P90D looks very attractive, it's a very good choice if you're in the market for a daily driver. Some companies let you charge your electric car for free...imagine go to work from Monday to Friday without spending a single dime on petrol and have that insane accelerations, really makes me think about the future. In order for me to be happy I need a gas guzzling car that roars like a thunder but I wouldn't mind at all combining both worlds, Electric & gas guzzler. Oh man...I already wanted to drive a Tesla, now I'm even more curious!!

+David Araújo Thanks buddy ! Yes, it's impressive. A smaller car from Tesla would be very attractive for many people, I think
