You missed the very first thing is crack loose the fill plug before draining. If you drain it and can’t fill it ..not good.

I agree with what you're saying however it's not really a common problem on Subarus especially if they're less than 10 years old. So I wasn't really concerned as it was low mileage as well. But good advice.

Yeah. I injured my left hand and couldn't get the fill plug off for a month and half until my hand healed... now I'm watching this video to make sure I cycle the new fluid through correctly

It also makes it drain faster.

Dont be so obsessed with scanners, temperatures and official Subaru CVT. I did my partial fluid change 3 years ago. Without scanner, without even lifter, using single 5L AISIN CVTF canister. It drives happily since.

It can be done without a scanner however when showing people what to do it is my duty to show them to the best of my ability and knowledge the right way. Thank you for commenting glad that your car is working fine.

my 2010 Maxima with the CVT has an external filter. Nissan told me not to change the filter. I’m at 150K and changed the fluid at about every 50K. In fact, Nissan did the first two, and they called it a flush, when it was actually a drain and fill as you did. I did the last drain and fill - I changed the filter.

Yeah it's definitely a good idea to change the filter if it's accessible. I don't know why they would tell you not to change the filter that doesn't make sense to me. As long as it's something that is serviceable it's definitely better to do it especially knowing that the cvts from Nissan aren't the most robust or reliable. Good on you for not listening to them.

Just goofed up and drained the CVT fluid instead of the oil. Just wondering are able to do this without a jack and stands? I know itd make it way easier but i dont have 4 stands to lift it up! Thanks for your time!

I would like to see the procedure you would have used had you not been able to remove the fill plug after having already removed the drain plug...

Honestly my friend I've never had that issue. If the cars get past 10 years then I usually crack the fill plug first to make sure that it will come out however it's not a common issue with the subarus.

Will be doing this soon to my 2012 Subaru legacy, also want to drop the pan, clean the magnet but not sure if I should replace the oil strainer/filter, reached out to Subaru and they told me that it’s really rare for them to drop the pan and replace the strainer. What do you recommend ? Mileage on my car is 80k and this will be the first time this car is getting the service done. Thank you !!

If you have a CVT my friend there is no point in dropping the pan it is going to drive up to work quite a bit more and really not serve much of a purpose. It would be best to just do a CVT service prematurely you'll probably end up getting more dirty material out of the transmission that way.

@@JimmysAutoClinicyea it’s a CTV, so you recommend just doing a simple flush and refill like in your video ? Also thanks for getting back to me, love your content please keep it coming 🎉🎉

Remove the fill plug before draining, as you would the rear differential?

  • @JimmysAutoClinic

You can remove it. I find it doesn't make a huge difference but it definitely doesn't hurt either.

Also…is there a filter under the trans pan that might need to be changed? Or is that optional?? I’m wanting to change my own fluid, that’s why I’m asking…thank you!

  • @JimmysAutoClinic

As far as I know there is no filter on the cvts externally or internally under the pan. But there are different models and I suggest contacting the dealer with your VIN number to find out whether your transmission has a serviceable filter.

Hey my friend. We use a autel scanner and I also have an X tool scanner. Most scan tools have the physical capability but your software may be limiting you. Depending on what scanner you get you can call the manufacturer to ask them whether the particular product will do the job that you need to. Unfortunately most scan tools don't give you that sort of information unless they're expensive sadly.

you're not "swapping out" the fluid by doing a drain and fill. you're replacing about a third of the old fluid with new fluid
