Please leave a comment if you've had experience with batteries going bad in such a short timespan. I would think it would at least be good for another couple of years.

Well, that was true back in the day. These days, 4 years tops, and with your temperatures there, 3 years is probably not bad. Yes, some will make it longer, some shorter. I just replaced my 4 year old battery. It was shot. Those of us at a certain age can remember getting 6-7 years out of a battery, and a good battery was under $50! I hate sounding old........the good news is some stores have eliminated the prorated system completely, and just warranty the battery for 2-3 years period. After that, you buy another...the prorate was always a gimmick, as they charged you an inflated list price on the replacement battery...

Ford uses a battery management system. Normal driving the battery isnt charging much. During decelaration it will charge at maximum. They do this to save on fuel economy. This system can be disabled and the old fashioned charging style will resume. This will cost about 2mpg or less loss. Connect a voltage gauge and monitor.

Great job!!!! I have a customer that asked me to replace his starter tomorrow. He said he already purchased his starter. Before I replace it I will definitely check his battery! It will be less money for me if it is the battery but I don't want to replace parts that don't need to be replaced just to make a few extra bucks! I guess that's why I have so many satisfied customers 😇!

Hopefully it is my battery taken it out to have it checked if so I too shall be buying a new one. Thanks for sharing your story and video!!!

If you do a lot of short distance driving, the alternator won't give the battery enough of a charge and will lead to premature failure of the battery. So in that case, it's best to use your battery tender to maintain the charge on the battery.

  • @ritterjon

    @ritterjon

We do a lot of short distance driving to and from work. I figured that would also play a factor to its premature failure. With our 2013 Fusion we never had an issue however.

I know you are not going to like what I'm about to post. I had to replace my battery in my 2010 Chevy Silverado a week ago. It lasted over nine years as I purchased the vehicle new in September of 2010. If you have a volt meter. Make sure you are getting a good charge from your alternator. You should see a good 14 volts with the engine running after startup.

I have a 2018 Explorer that will be 3 years old in August or 34 months old. I have had a few issues with getting warnings that the electrical system is going into an energy saving mode to save on the battery. The vehicle has almost 11,000 miles and almost 3 years old so it’s not used much. Just lately I was about to go on a trip and the car sat for 3 weeks prior and I had the doors open cleaning the interior for a few hours. The long and the short of this is the battery drained the system probably below its norm and the BCM went bad according to Ford and the vehicle airbag light came on and they replaced it and things are fine. I have heard about other having the same issue when the battery goes below a certain voltage and the lights start coming on and things stop working. Don’t cost me anything since it’s still under warranty. But others have paid $600 plus and their vehicles needed programming after the install of the BCM.

Since the 70s batteries no longer gave warning like the old days. They used to slowly die. The new batteries are lower weight - they might have good CCA (cold cranking amps) but will fail / not charge / not hold a charge . Have the battery load tested at a trusted dealer or parts supply. A good replacement battery will be better than OEM but still will not give you the 6 plus years your folk's battery did. SPRING is coming so looking to some good tractor videos. Take care.

Same problem here. Only difference, I drove to an appointment. When I came out, no start. Nothing electric would work. Tried to jump it from another vehicle but would not take charge. Called dealer who said they had seen this before, actually had one in for the same problem at this time. Called tow truck. When he arrived he asked what was the problem, I said no start nothing electrical works, including lights. He went to his truck and retrieved a jump box. I told him I tried a jump. He told me that didn't work on these new vehicles? To my surprise he hooked it up and bam! It started. It's still at the dealer under warranty now being diagnosed. We own a 2014 Camry xle that we have did nothing to. Just change oil and tires, nothing else. Not loving my Ford Explore experience.

kentucky windage222 If nothing electrical works, then that more likely indicates either a very low or dead battery, and/or bad connection(s). The Ground, a Fuse-able link, the Positive. So a jump start, would probably not help either. Poor Connections can slowly drain the battery and not charge it properly, until it gets too low to do it’s things. Leave on a radio, headlights, or something while the car is not running, and then it’s too low to work properly at all, and not enough to jump even. Md

@@nochannel376 Yeah, we haven't had it but about 2 months. All the connections on the battery look very clean. It just went dead or drained over the 45 minutes at appointment(nothing on before without running or left on while parked). I had just drove about 30 minutes to get there. I'll know in day or so hopefully from the dealer service dept. It was scheduled for the next day anyway. 🤣 For 3 recalls.

@@kentuckywindage222 Sounds like the Alternator is not charging it properly. I think a basic test for this is pulling the ground from the battery, when the car is running, if it dies, then its alternator related. If the alternator does not charge properly, the battery slowly or quickly goes dead. If it is a new enough battery, it will re-charge, re-build, or re-place the missing charge capacity, so that would explain the wait a day and it works. The whole no electrical thing, is a bit different of a symptom, with what you are saying about good connections. I don't think we talked about battery or alternator condition.

@@nochannel376 No we didn't. I think if I were to have this problem again, I would use a multimeter to check the battery and connections. Then use a jump box like the rollback driver did to start it and check the alternator. Sounded to me like a dead draw. But I'm an old school shade tree mechanic(charge the battery and leave it unhooked to car to see if it holds charge then hook it and see). I'm not up on the new cars. The days of getting gas and fire, crossing the solenoid and pulling cables are out dated.🤣😂 Seems like this is a fairly common issue with 5th gen Explorer's.? Also wheel bearings are another common issue.? Higher miles I can see but our 2014 Camry xle v6 has been absolutely great. I am anxious to hear what Ford garage has to say. Unfortunately modern batteries tend to die quickly especially in severe climates. The electrical draw from all the fancy electronics on the new cars coupled with the cheaply made batteries tends to kill them quickly. Plus if you tend to make a lot of short trips the alternator can't keep it charged. I know you have mentioned in the past that the garage has no heat and that you have a block warmer for the tractor. You might consider both a block warmer and a battery tender for the Explorer. Keep us posted on what you end up doing. Been missing your videos. How is your weather now? Are you in any danger from the flooding up that way?

  • @ritterjon

The garage will be heated next year. You are right about the short trips to work and the severe cold climate. I'd quit too if I were a battery. I replaced it with a new one with 200 more CCA. I hope it'll make a difference. Too many gizmo's and gadgets on these new cars. We shouldn't be affected to badly by the flooding. Farmers will have a hard time getting into their fields but at least Spring is finally here! God bless

Your Video would of been more helpful to me, if you had demonstrated the issue, and we could see how the vehicle reacted. I read all the comments, so it sounds like hindsight, but I would of wondered on the age of the battery, even though the vehicle is only so old, because you got it used, people can switch things, like batteries, before selling the vehicle. I pulled up your video, because I watched a lady trying to start her 2016 Ford Explorer, and it was acting crazy, headlights, flashed on and off quickly, brake lights also seemed to flash, I should of taken video to show, loud clicking sounds, sometime I recall from the past on some vehicles when there is not enough power to turn over the engine. Other noises, like the vehicle electrical system starting, then shutting off very quickly. I could see and hear this all from across the parking lot. I went over to see what was going on, and the lady said her car was not powering down right, so maybe the battery was drained. When she tried to start the vehicle when I could see into the vehicle, the dash went dark, which also reminded me of other vehicles that would do the same thing on low battery power. But also when searching this issue, before I had the make, model, and year, of the car, people also referred to the security system, and that sometimes the get stuck in a certain mode, and you have to reset them, with some process, outlined in the owners manual. Then they gave some examples. The lady said she had AAA, and was going to call them, after she lined someone to pick up her family, in another location, because she was not going to be there in time. So basically, I pulled up your video, to see if your vehicle was going to do all this low battery crazy stuff, so I could confirm the issue, and possible solution. But since we did not see that, the video does not really describe that happening, and none of the comments really make any reference to those symptoms, this may not be the whole or sole, or exact issue, with this lady’s vehicle. Since you asked for comments, I felt I could comment, thanks for asking. Mike Dee

Ok, I have a 2013 Escape and have had all kinds of battery problems for day one. A couple of times I have come out to a dead battery from over nite, can never trust this thing at all. I did find that after I shut the car down, the system pulls upwards of 7 amps from the battery and slowly drops that load over a 15 minute period to eventually the current draws is some where around 100 to 200 ma draw after 30 minutes. My battery voltage upon the average start up is about 11.5 volts. Have now gone thru 4 batteries of different capacities which does not make much difference over time. Also, have to do a battery reset procedure every now and then just to be able to listen to the radio for more then a 5 minute period with the car shut off. So now I place the a battery trickle charger on the car over nite thru the colder weather. Thinking about putting a 100 watt solar panel on roof to keep her topped up thru the day time.

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer. Between my auto mechanic and myself we found that is the battery but not for the same reason as many. It turns out that the keyless entry began failing. You don’t notice it much but it began cycling in some flashing rhythm and it would do this all night and drain the battery. For now we pulled the 10/11 fuse and that has been a temporary fix but that also keeps me from opening my trunk. If anyone has a clue on a better hack or fix, please let me know.

The batteries they put in cars today are the light weight batteries that do not last long. This is to cut down on the weight and “improve gas mileage”. Also, you live in a very cold climate, which in my opinion is hard on a battery. It’s funny how batteries “always” fail in the winter. Interesting note, I have a 2012 KIA Optima Hybrid that has the original factory battery still, 7 years old. Maybe I should have it tested.

It is cold here, no doubt about that. If I were a battery I would have quit a long time ago. Lots of bell and whistles with a short commute to work have all combined to for the battery into retirement. I got a new one with 200 more CCA. I hope it helps. The battery in my truck almost last 10 years. Every vehicle is different. God bless.

Batteries should last at least 5 years . For a problem to exist in only Ford Explorers means that vehicle is sucking power when the engine is not running . I think . I'd put a load checker on that battery to check it out . I also would check the voltage on the battery while the engine is running to see if the alternator is working properly . Voltage should be over 14 on the meter . Last if you're going to get a new battery than don't get a Ford battery . My brothers batteries in his truck lasted 13 years . Diesel engine has 2 batteries . My truck also has 2 batteries and they have been good for 8 years so far . Knock on wood . LOL Even if you do all of that checking , yes I would still get a new battery . Hate having no confidence in a battery . Don't get a Ford battery .

I replaced the battery with a better one. The old one had 650 CCA and the new one has 850. Hoping that will make a difference. My Explorer is my main vehicle (2016 Platinum), bought it last October and I too have battery issues. Mostly dies when I'm cleaning it and I have to keep a door open for vacuuming. Dies every time if the doors are open longer than 10 minutes. I do have a battery minder and I didn't think I'd have to use it in the summer, but it looks like that may be the case. I work in a Fleet Department and I was told to buy a battery with cold cranking amps of 750 or more. Do you think that will solve the problem? Older vehicles I've owned I can play the radio for an hour and it would still start. The Explorer not handling 10 minutes is quite a surprise especially with no radio playing and the headlights set to off.

  • @ritterjon

I don't know much about how many cold cranking amps your should need. I do know the more the better. Also manufacturers put the cheapest batteries they can at the assembly plant. They also put the cheapest tires because I had to replace them at just 25k miles. I love the vehicle but wish it came with some quality tires and battery. I just love the 3.5 Ecoboost though. So much power, it's fun to drive. Hope you get your problem resolved.

That likely an ACDelco, but hey battery manufacturers don’t really make “new” batteries these days thats why they taking the battery cores. But I agreed these so called “new” they ain’t new, just rebuilt ones don’t last long. I personally believe the way Ford designed their cars run on too many modules those regular batteries don’t last long.
