As a small car owner, I would be more likely to upgrade to a small crossover than a larger SUV. Honestly, the space is more than sufficient, the price is affordable, and the fuel economy excellent. Performance is good enough for me. Too many cars are simply overpowered today anyways. All that HP is unnecessary, regardless if you like it or not. Europeans drive much less HP cars than we do and they manage. This car can do 180-190 kph. What's the beef? Our speed limits are 110 kph in Canada anyways. One plus of the small engine is the fact that this is one of the most fuel efficient crossovers. That's important to note. Thanks for the review!

Good answer. Most people are not car journalists and don't get free cars to drive. So high hp and hardcore off road capabilities in a luxury package is just not worth the big price tag. We just need a car that is functional and can handle the occasional snow blast.

I just got a 2019 back in January coming from a Jeep Liberty sport. I was so disappointed thinking my hrv wouldn’t be able to hang like my Jeep does. Boy I was wrong. Thanks for this video!!

We love our HRV, we already own a 2014 CRV so the HRV was the perfect car for us. We wanted fuel economy, solid iihs rating and room for taking the kids short distances in the city. Highly recommend!

it is a beautiful chilled out drive... here in Australia we are all about being chilled out and cruising in a comfortable ride.... so for me its awesome to get to work on but also perfect to get me to the beach or down the highway to visit friends

I own a 2017 Honda Hrv ex 6 speed manual transmission in the same color for almost a year now and let me tell you, I absolutely love it. The 6 speeds are very rare to come by.

I bought the 2016 HRV EXL Navi with beautiful red exterior, black leather interior... Would highly recommend this vehicle....

Nice review buddy. You almost took out the jogger and a seagull on your test drive but thats not a bad thing. Looks like a fun compact Suv. Like the front fold down seat to put your feet up and the flexible headrests. I want one!

M Ave Did you ever get the HR-V?

I've had mine for a year now, and I love it. I have the EX 6 speed manual, so the smaller engine isn't an issue for me. Just drop it down a couple of gears, and she goes. Perfect for the dog and hauling thing in the back. Comfortable on cross country road trips. I average over 37mpg. It's finished off nicely for an entry level vehicle, but not so nice that I have to worry about dogs and kids messing it up. I know it's not for everyone, but what car is. It's a good compromise between a large gas guzzler and a smaller car.

Hopefully they'll use the K20 motor found in the current gen civics if they do a refresh. The R18 with AWD is a bit struggling especially merging into highway traffic.

Pretty nice complete review. We have a 2016 model bought new in Dec 2016. It has been completely reliable, only 80,000 km on it but great. Fitted with Michelin X ice snow tires its a fantastic winter/driving in snow car. the rear seat configuration is brillant and works perfectly. There's enough space to haul 8ft long lumber. Your comments on the front seats are mostly right on. I find the side bolsters on the front seats are good to keep lateral movement but the front seat cushions are short, not overly comfortable for tall people on long trips. In these days of high gas prices i can live with the sluggish acceleration and to be honest we never use the sport mode!! Great highway car, excellent speed control. Excellent trouble free vehicle after 6 years!!

We just leased our first ever new vehicle - a base model AWD HR-V 4 months ago, and we love it for it's primary purpose-city driving. Plan A was to lease a FIT to get us through the infant years of our new family member, but the ceiling was too low in the FIT's back seat and we moved onto plan B- leasing a 2019 HR-V. I love that Honda skirted 2008's pain in the neck Head "restraint" litigation, with reversible head "rests", and my neck is much happier. While shopping, I was trying to match my all-time favorite vehicle - 1999 AWD Toyota RAV4....which has a considerably smaller footprint than a majority of modern crossover vehicles. What modern consumers may not realize is that a smaller footprint is often beneficial in off-pavement driving. Remember the small footprint that paved the way for "Trail rated" badges now glued onto Jeep's mall crawlers? Does the average ATV clear a beverage can/bottle? A small footprint can often compensate for lacking ground clearance-unless you drive a factory slammed AWD Impreza. I appreciate the reviewer's thorough demonstration of AWD wheel lock up on uneven terrain. It's not perfect, but it looks like it could get you un-stuck. HR-V drawbacks: 1 For descending steep mountain roads, I have wanted a lot more engine braking than is afforded by the CVT in my HR-V (yes, i have downshifted, and tried sport mode). It seems like the vehicle waits until the driver applies and holds significant brake pedal pressure before engaging meaningful engine braking-which I don't like for slippery winter driving, when applying brakes can be the best way to break traction on all 4 wheels and initiate a skid. I'm not talking about an ABS application for stopping, I'm talking about a driver controlled descent, down a sustained, often winding grade from 20-50 MPH. Riding the brake on a sustained descent is not great for your braking system - the brakes should assist the engine, instead of engine assisting brakes. Maybe the paddle shifters in the high trim model supply more engine braking? The similarly equipped and priced Crosstrek also uses a CVT and lacks Subaru's Hill Descent Control feature. 2 As the reviewer pointed out, the car doesn't appear to be capable of clearing winter debris. If you can look past the front bumper's flexible black plastic wind fairing, the rest of the vehicle looks somewhat capable of clearing winter debris-to me. I wonder if the front fairing can be trimmed or removed as to avoid catching passing debris? I bought the Honda damage plan, as I'll be driving mountain roads in the winter. If it survives three winters intact, I'll be secure about calling the HR-V a "High Performance Vehicle" and owning it. Subaru's Crosstreck has +1" of ground clearance and +2"wheelbase

11:03. The three vents are awesome, because if you close one or two of the vents it blows more cool or hot air if you like. Then if you want all three open the air is very well balanced. The only drawback is the driver dosen't get that luxury lol!

The small suv or crossover buyer wants to save $$$. That's one of the main reasons I have found. Also not everyone needs all that room offered in the large offerings. There is obviously a need/want for them. They're selling very well in the US. The HR-V was Honda's best selling vehicle last year.

The Honda is a perfect car for someone looking for cheap point a to b transportation with AWD. It's not fast, sporty, luxuries, or fun to drive but it gets the job done as good honest transportation.

Rondal Childers having the 1.5t raises the price and maintenance costs, I would rather see the 2.0 from the base civic.

By the way. I am considering this size car because I liked my old Santa Fe but I just need something a bit smaller now. Having an extra six feet in my garage with a 14' car like this is a plus.

Very good and honest review. The only weak point - and it's common with most reviewers out there, is you don't mention the foot comfort at the pedals for a tall driver. I'm 6ft (183cm) and could barely place my foot on the pedals, let alone hope for some comfort on long drives. Same with the Mazda CX-3 (actually Mazda was worse). The only small crossover that could fit my foot at the pedals with some comfort was the Subaru Crosstrek (which was also surprisingly roomy inside). If you are tall and want a Honda, go with the Civic, it's a different platform and has good space at the pedals for tall drivers.

hi! thanks for the comments! I'm 6'2, 225 and didnt get any problem with the pedals. It's also depending on how you place your seat for your perfect driving position and that's mostly different for everybody!

Its about space, functionality and cost. What I ideally want is a CRV size with the adjustable seats for an all in cost with taxes of $30,000 CDN. I'd buy that today. However, the CRV is all in around $33,000 minimum while and HRV can be had for $27000 all in.

Excellent Review! Have had this for one year but recently got an issue where I had to change the traction motor. Now there are some new issues with it :(

One of the things that have bugged me for a while is that the car jerks. This is most noticeable when the car switches from EV to engine (I have the hybrid Japan variant called the Vezel) The other thing: Replacing the traction motor has caused the car sometimes to not accelerate but revs high. This usually happens twice or thrice in a 20km drive. This is pretty weird and has made me want to switch the car with another.

Nice review. We have an HRV in Thailand.. Fewer safety features (no front collision system or side cameras) and no nav.. Also no AWD available. However it's a great car in many ways. My main problem with it, and I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the video, but the suspension is very poor. Something that is sometimes difficult to know during a test drive, but on bumps, rough surfaces, or potholes the car is jarring and not relaxing to drive. Cheap leaf suspension in the rear! As I understand it the Subaru is better in this area, but I'm not sure about Mazda. 2 upgrades that would make this car excellent - 1.5 turbo engine & upgraded softer suspension.

well, i had a 2012 nissan juke, so it was definitely one of the earlier starter models. And i was super interested in the hr-v until i did more research. a lot of the things the car companies are doing when they introduce these new crossovers to the market is install the older systems on it. They take what they had before, and because its not quite an suv, and no one would really call it that, they tend to add the features their older vehicles had. I compared the features the hr-v had to my sisters 2012 cr-v and it was nothing close to far. my new 10th gen civic has many more upscale features than the hr-v does. and another thing, when they introduce these crossovers, i feel as though they are testing the interest of their customers first They want to see how many people are buying the car because of actual interest in the concept, so why waste money on parts that may not even be sold. the first jukes, including mine, had engines that were nimble for their sizes but could pass to be their engine because of the concept, suv sedan crossover. Correct me if im wrong, but i read or heard from somewhere that the engines in the hr-v were very similar to the engines in their past civics. idk, those are just my thoughts. sorry if im wrong about any of them. i just got my civic like a month ago, so still getting used to the honda world. lol

I am in Los Angeles. That future missing in USA models . I ask many dealers. IT'S NOT AVAILABLE ON HRV TOURING.

you can't have it both ways. If you want to load up your friends in tow and they gear, you need a Suburban or large van, and you would get 15mpg. This thing is built for one person and maybe 100lbs of their stuff but you get 40mpg

HRV had a 100% digital dash in 2016, basically before any other brand besides Tesla

Nice review. When you are testing performance did you cut off the ECON mode or not ? It's important because the ECON mode is to avoid too fast accelerations. I had this "problem" on a CRV in the beginning.

Hmmm it’s quite interesting the confusion. But to summarize why people are buying such cars. Here’s why. I’m actually one of those who’ve driven a normal “powerful” SUV. One with 6 cylinder engine. And here’s my honest opinion. Number 1, when I drove that 6 cylinder 3.5liter engine SUV. Let me tell you, that thing is POWERFUL. It can really haul and tow giant things. It can really carry all your equipment and seat 5 nicely. But the gas. The gas!!!! That thing is powerful but a HUGE gas guzzler. In today’s world. Energy is really really depriving. It is estimated that oil will seriously break and become very very scarce by the year 2050. Not too far away. In fact in 30years. Do we really need cars that really use a ton of oil reserves? In my opinion. Only if you really haul a lot of stuff than by all means go ahead. But for the majority of people who need a dependable car. Can seat 5 when you need to. And is very good on gas. Then something like the HRV is great! Even more so if you are using the car for work. Groceries. Or every day driving! The gas will go longer than typical suvs and I think the 1.8liter 4 cylinder engine is plenty for a car like the HRV. To me 1.5liter and up is plenty for every day driving. Number 2. The space in these crossovers are insane nowadays that you can fit pretty much more stuff and sometimes even more than typical SUVs because of smart designs. Honda’s Magic seat and the way they fold flat down is a HUGE plus. You can haul a lot of stuff and sometimes even more than typical SUVs! A BIG BIG plus. Number 3. The designs on these cars. I actually hated them. I never liked the curvy ness to them but I learned that it’s like able if you know why they are curved. To improve gas mileage and aerodynamics. They are also more compact. Easy to handle in the city. Easier to park. And easy to drive. I don’t mind big SUVs but They weren’t always a favorite to me :( if those big SUVs did 3 things good Such as gas mileage, Compactness and still good cargo, and ease of use. It would be a winner. In the end, the above. Those 3 things THAT is the reason why In my opinion. The HRV is a BIG winner. I was actually looking into a HONDA FIT at first. But seeing how the HRV is a tad more roomier. More ground clearance. Has good gas mileage and is overall a dependable good car. Now the HRV is on my eyes. It’s a great car!

I bought 2019 Toyota CHR in Jan, Just running about 399km in a month, the vehicle was out of control and has been written off, I don't really know what is the problem, but I think something wrong with the power train or accelerator with the speed increase, I do not recommend Toyota, the quality and safety of it no longer as good as it was.

A nice car in so many ways, but that engine....lordy.....I felt like I was driving with the emergency brake on. Seriously??? Why put so much attention too detail, then kill it with an enemic engine? Forget performance.....driving round town was like driving in wet concrete. Ended up buying a Fit with a manual. Great review from a great Canadian neighbor!!

The running gear quality in all Honda vehicles is unbeatably robust because Honda uses much better metals. I know that since i've owned two HRV's and driven them in some extreme corrugated and muddy tracks in Oz without a single failure. They're not beefy vehicles like the Toyota Land-cruiser but they can handle punishment very well...

I found the seats way too hard and for my long torso the padding was in the wrong place and made the seats very uncomfortable. The seats in the civic and accord are just fine so it is something about this car.

The Honda Vezel came DOHC, so this car didn't need to come SOHC for this trim level.

If you want to go fast, buy a mustang! In today’s congested roads, where are you going to go 100 mph? Don’t you love car commercials…….. where they show their cars driving along on open city and country roads! Keep dreaming! This isn’t la-la land. Wake up and smell reality. As for the Honda HRV. If you know how to DRIVE and use those paddle shifters you can make that car fly. You need to think out of the box. Honda gives you a great vehicle, but your skills as a driver will take it and many other makes and models to the next level. I owned a 1956 Chevy, the seating height and visual appreciation of the environment from the driver’s seat is almost the same as the average SUV, if not better. Remember the first mass produced cars by Ford? You sat high with a clear view of the road. As cars became faster and faster the cars became lower to compensate for the centrifugal forces that could cause them to flip over. NOPE

The suspension just feels horrible if the road surface is uneven compared to many cars. So uncomfortable. It is a Honda, so it is very disappointing. The side mirror seems a bit too big and is blocking the driver's view of pedestrians crossing the road. The chrome ring around the air-cond duct is very annoying. During sunny day, it is reflected on the side mirrors. Simply annoying. If you want to feel the performance use the S Mode, but remember to switch off the Eco mode. For some stupid reasons, you can have both Eco mode and S Mode on at the same time. Remember to off the Eco Mode even in S Mode. I feel the same as you... so puzzled, why people like this car?

CVT transmission kills this car stone-dead as far as sales in the UK goes. Nissan and their unreliable CVT have finally killed CVT off I think.

Only Nissan CVT sucks... Honda CVTs do not fail as easy as Nissan´s.

Experience in the UK on many brands of CVT, from Ford, Subaru, Fiat and others, plus the Nissan/Jatco debacle, ensures that CVT transmissions are viewed with justified scepticism by potential buyers and are virtually unsaleable used without a substantial all-risks breakdown warranty. As an automatic transmission fan and an owner and driver of a power-splitting heavy duty transmission [Fendt], I would not touch these push-belt CVT's with a barge pole. I don't need the worry or potential aggravation.

Nice come on “bait and hook photo” showing a HRV climbing a driveway incline. Can you tell me where that image is? You are wrong about passing the big trucks! You can easily pass them in the “S” mode with the use of the “Paddle Shifters”. You just have to know how to use these features. I have done it easily so many times! This car can easily outrun so many “V8’s” This reviewer does not know what he is talking about, and he is giving the HRV an unsubstantiated review. Stop giving the public misinformation.
