2015 WRX STI Power Slide Compilation

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've done my fair share of controlling slides in rwd cars, and wanted to try and understand how 4wd would react when you kick out the back :)

Sketchy stuff man! But very stylish haha, nice drifts. I have a 2021 STI myself, I've had the rear break loose just a little a few times when I have taken off at a turn with the diff setting biased to rear. That was in the dry. But it felt natural, just like a gentle slide around to straighten me out. Scared to ever try that in the wet on a public road haha.

I've got mine of the same year and i also want to do it in the dry. Got any tips to pull it off?

The diff can’t be set to rear or front biased; it can just be set to more or less locked.

@@SonikJesus That’s pretty much correct- you are right, I should not be saying “biased”, that is incorrect. However, a more clear explanation that comes from Subaru for the “auto” settings is that it does adjust the split of the “initial torque”, before the diffs kick in and start making adjustments based off of traction. So when in regular auto, the initial torque split is roughly 40/60 front to rear. In auto +, the initial torque goes to all 4 wheels a bit more evenly (hence why it feels a bit more under steer like in auto + and does better taking off in the rain) and in auto -, it allows more of the initial torque to hit the rear wheels, better for acceleration in the dry and giving the illusion of a slightly more rear drive feel when accelerating. But yeah, all 3 diff’s are still working at all times to maintain traction. It just effects the initial way the torque splits between the front and rear diffs when getting on the throttle.

Bit of initial understeer there but nicely powered into oversteer 👌

Been curious about this too. I wont be doing it again until I upgrade my swaybars. I am going for a neutral setup with enough to kick out the back at will, I NEED to learn this. Only thing I havent experienced and its good to know how to react to it.

Your car looks like its packing a lot of power already. You probably can get it to kick out very easily with a little power over. Personally I think its pretty hard to maintain the slide in AWD. It makes more sense to me now why a lot of WRC cars use the e-brake so often to get the appropriate angle because your front tires are pulling you so much through the turn. Wait till it rains and find a big empty parking lot where there is nothing for you to hit! hahaha That way grip is limited and you don't need to be going super fast in order to experience the back kicking out. You'll also get to feel what I mean when the front wheels pull you forward hahah rwd feel so much easier to maintain a slide. The catch I think is pretty easy. The steer wheel almost naturally follows and is pretty hard to descriptively write what that feeling is like when you need to stop the wheel from turning more. the hard part i think is straightening out smoothly. When you feel your rear tires gripping again, you need to be faster than the car in this reaction or else you're going to go in the direction of the counter steer and swing the other way.

Nice skids! You really just gotta floor it in AWD cars to keep the traction low

confidence is key brother.. when turning, pop the clutch to get the wheels to start spinning n either send it or feather it round the corner.. youll get there

Thanks! The hand work is tricky to get right at first. I started when I was younger and just let the steering wheel slide through my hands and caught it when I felt like it was a good time to catch it. But definitely this was a bad habit I had to beat. I think the next time it rains, I need to do it in an open area to get a feel for maintaining the slide. I wonder if that really is possible to do in an awd. Of course it wont be the same as rwd, but we can try! :)

I'm actually just on auto - for this. 4wd slides are super weird feeling. When you try to maintain the slide or give it more angle like you would on a rwd car, I can feel the front wheels pulling me while im trying to get more angle out of the car haha maybe I would feel less of that if the center differential was set on manual and to the rear.

Brian Frazell 15+ STI AWD System provides 41:59 torque split. Meaning that 59% of the power is going to the rear wheels which allows it to slide the back out while still having great control

hahaha start off in a BIG empty parking lot! One with no parking lot lights in the middle of the area that you can possibly hit hahaha and give it a try the next time it rains! Keep your eyes on where you want to go. Start small with a jab of the throttle to get the rear loose and catching the slide with the appropriate amount of counter steer :) Personally, I think its complicated to explain and more so something you need to feel to understand :) gotta start somewhere though! :)

hahaha i would have needed a lot more speed and road to do it dry. power over in the wet just bring the grip threshold lower to a more manageable speed. Even on track, for me to manage to get the rear loose, I'd have to lift off the throttle mid corner at around 90 mph to get the rear to swing around hahaha
