    Have a 2014. The clips on the sides were really hard to access from the sides. I found it easier to first release the bottom clip so there is a gap on the front and then release the side clips through the gap.

    If the panic button makes the horn sound but it won't work by pressing the steering wheel is it definitely the clockspring? Is there something else in the steering wheel it could be?

    Thank for sharing!! In my Forester 2015 the horn AND many functions as cruise control, radio control and also functions related to the satelital switches were out (off) at a same time. Does it suggest a total clock coil failure or a missconnected connector? Jorge from Rio de Janeiro - Brasil

    Hey good question. So run through some of the suggestions in this video. If the horn is not working because a bad clock spring then it's possible your steering wheel controls are not working for the same reason. This is a common issue on these Subarus. Let me know if you need any help 👍

    Hello. I have a '99 Civic whose horn only works sometimes... I hear the relay's clicking noises when I press the buttons on the steering wheel. I bought another horn at a junkyard, thinking it was the horn, but it turned out not to be, as both work hooked up to a battery... What could it be? Help would be appreciated from anyone...

    If you pull the airbag out then you should disconnect the battery for 90 seconds then remove the airbag. You can re hook up the battery once the airbag is removed for further testing. Disconnect the battery before reinstalling the airbag.

    Hello! Replaced old horn with a new one. I wired it up correctly, tried testing horn from steering wheel and it isn't working. I disconnected the wire connecting to the factory horn power line and touched it to the positive terminal on the battery.....horns blasting full power. Because of this I know the wiring is good, horn is good, relay is good, fuse is good (mechanic tested fuse). We also did a bypass relay switch - the horn is working. The problem exists somewhere between my stock horn line and the steering wheel, for some reason power isn't getting through that line to the horns. Also tried pressing my panic button, NO HORN only blinking lights. Any idea what the possible causes of failure could be if it's isolated to this area? It stresses me out.😓 Thank you very much in advance.

    I had the recall notification for the airbag to be fixed. I haven't really driven the car since then however im driving it more now and the horn is working intermittently. I did the steering wheel portion of the diagnosis and it seems to be only not work when the wheel is centered. Could the airbag replacement have been the culprit?

    I would take it back and let them know the horn is now not working sometimes. See what they say, they may fix it since they were in there last. But it could just be a coincidence. The clock spring is behind the airbag so they didn't need to remove it to change the airbag. But I would still see what they say, you may get it fixed for free.

    Hey Cedrick, I pay for a subscription to Identifix. It's pricy but it's for my business. I couldn't operate without it. One option many manufacturers have is a "weekend" subscription to OEM information and diagrams. Different manufacturers offer different options but you get complete access to everything. So for this Subaru you would go to the Subaru website and see what they offer.

    Thanks for the information. My 2016 Forester has this very problem: panic horn works, and horn works once in awhile when wheel is turned. The dealer wants $195 to diagnose and cannot tell how much it will cost to repair. How much do you think it should cost at the dealership to fix?

  • @leftward_hoe

    new clock spring itself is $200 from online subaru parts websites. the dealer will probably charge you more just for the part. then they want $200 from you to diagnose (what you saw being done in this 8 minute video). then they will want to charge you for labor (someone who knows what they are doing can fix this in under 30 mins). i've seen people various places online say that they were quoted $600+ to fix this by a dealership. if you're swimming in cash and like to pay for less hassle, go ahead with that plan. a third-party subie repair shop might quote you less, if you know of a reputable one near you. of course the cheapest (and potentially riskier) option is to just do it yourself. watch a handful of videos from different guys on youtube doing this repair and see if you're up to it.

    My girlfriend is having trouble with her 2010 outbacks horn. It honks fine no matter what the position the steering wheel is turned but also honks by itself when the wheel is turned. Do you think it might be the clock spring that needs replaced since it honks by itself when you turn the steering wheel but honks fine no matter where it's turned?

  • @ValleyMobileAutomotive

    @ValleyMobileAutomotive

    In your case I wouldn't think it's the clock spring. The clock spring is just a path for electricity to go through. The horn button provides a ground to the relay so I would look for a wire touching/rubbing on metal around the steering wheel or under the dash. The relay provides power to the horn so another possibility is a short to power inside the wiring harness from the relay to the horn (this is less likely). Or it could be the relay itself randomly making contact inside (again probably not likely). I would focus on looking for a wire touching metal. You can take the airbag off and look at the horn switch as a start.
