Well if you take into account that all cars have grown in size, then proportionally the Mini is still pretty much a Mini. Take the BMW 3, or the VW Golf, or any car, they are much bigger then they used to be. The reality is that proportional to current cars the actual Mini is exceptionally small, in a very similar way that the first Mini compared to cars of its period.

if a modern mini came out the same size as the original I think few people would buy it. They would consider it as the Smart car

True, and I bet it would be a death trap.
The more I study these 2 cars, the more that the Mini;s superiority becomes evident. Even the interiors of the cars are worlds apart. Mini quality is BMW grade! The Fiesta interior is economy car grade.

Ok but the fiesta is cheaper and can compete with the mini where it matters lol
I just bought an R56 Cooper S as a cheap runabout. Didn't realize how awesome it was going to be. Puts a huge grin on my face, now the Porsche sits idle watching the Mini leave everyday..
I've had my Cooper S for about a year now and for new cars I'm totally hooked. Small, light, fast (compared to other cars especially here in the US) and handles like a dream.

Alex has it been reliable? Any issues?
What an amazing pocket rocket. I'd probably go for this over a Fiesta ST, which I love. The Mini looks so much fun!
Finally! A review of this car that isn't hard to watch. Thank you. Subscribed.
The Mini F56 is the best. Greetings Roland
You really put some really valid points, your review was outstanding, congratulations.
I like this new Mini. Comparing it to the original is like comparing a machine gun to a bow and arrow, they may get the job done, one is just a bit faster. Today owning a really small car, like the original Mini, is dangerous especially in a big city with big cars; and everything else is big when you're in the original Mini. So as a new and slightly improved Mini, I like it, its 'sportier' and sounds like fun to drive and own. Would I buy it? Probably not. But it would be in my top 5 hot hatches to buy.
No comparison. The Fiesta ST is an economy car with a turbo and suspension upgrades. The Mini Cooper S is a premium compact sports car.

Great review! Currently the happy owner of my 2002 Mini Cooper S and I personally love the new mini shape!
I ordered one before they came out. I drove it 5 days and gave it back. It's not a mini anymore. It's bigger and drives even bigger. They took all the fun out of it. The luxuries are nice but I'll take the fun of my old one any day.
Brilliant review keep them coming
This is a great review! Congratulations, very complete and objective.
Another Great vid xcar, keep up the good work
Have to say, what an amazing review! Straight to the point and interesting to watch. Ford Focus ST and Subaru WRX have been my only contenders for my next car, now I want to take the Mini S for a spin. :)
Excellent review of the F56 MINI, especially to see how it sits against the Fiesta ST
Great review as always
Your videos are great, there is a real balance in your conclusions. Keep it up!
Wow. Credit to the presenter. I'm a Mini owner and I hate this new 2015 model. But this guy opened my mind to a new way of thinking about it. It actually became a decent amount more appealing after hearing his reasoning
Totally correct point made at the end of this video. I was born in '86. I have been a passenger in the original Mini but it is not something I know and love. The first 'new' Mini on the other hand is the one I've seen around in my youth when I started to get interested in cars and the Cooper S was always a super-hatch to lust after.
Top tip, if you (like myself) have one of these and don't like the rev-matching gag purely for experience's sake, hold down the traction control switch for several seconds until it says DSC (dynamic stability control) is off. Also, you cannot turn off hill-start brake assistance. I'm not a fan, but it is safer and easier. I love this little car.
Fantastic review. Thanks.

Love this review!
It took me a while to get my head around the modern MINI, but I've slowly come to like it. Critically I've come to realise what's actually changed. whilst the practicality side of it is compromised in relation to it's Ancestor. What has happened is BMW have managed to keep the driving dynamics of the car so that it is still a huge smile generator when you drive it instead. Not long ago I tried a Cooper S which I'd had my reservations about but when I put it into sport mode, I actually truly FELT the car stiffen up, the steering became way more direct and heavier in my hands, and as I drove it down my favourite stretches of road I slowly came to absolutely love it!, the turn in is brilliant and the body roll is minimal with the adaptive shocks and feels playful whilst being encouraging with the way it manages to hold the road. The gearbox was a joy, it was light and everytime i accelerated there was always a very encouraging surge from the engine. My only complaint will always be the price, it's definitely a premium car, but the price range is far too close to a 1 series BMW and unless it's specc'd up I don't know if it's justifiable.
I brought a 2012 cooper S and totally love it, so much fun.
Love it, might need to grab a Mini S!
Would take it over a golf, and I love VWs
Loved the video!
Good film, thank you. Very good presentation.. You argued the Mini's case very well. You/me.. we'll never change the mindset or make reasonable the views of the haters.. let them hate. THIS IS A REALLY SUPERB LITTLE CAR.. AND I WOULD BUY ONE WITH MY OWN MONEY.. BUT for sure, Madam is going to try one, she's due a change. I would naturally suggest an "S", but I bet we end up with a "D" Whatever.? WF
Remind me quite a lot of Top Gear. :) Great video as always.
I prefer the Fiesta. I picked the ST over a Cooper SD because the drive was a little nicer when giving it some and a bit more fun to drive. No comparison in refinement and quality though, the Mini is a lot nicer in that respect.
I never really like the Minis ever until i started my driving lessons the other month, My instructors car is Cooper D 1.6 TDI and i love the way it drives and everything about it. In the past i wouldn't even consider getting a Mini but now it's a car i really want to own especially with the 2.0 Turbo engine, The only thing i don't like is how high of the ground it is but that's easily fixed
Xcar has a fair point about the new Mini in this video. The car might never be better than the original to drive but with customer demand, entertainment, economy and safety it's the best that it can be.
Nice review.

***** Assuming you mean the first modern model like my '02 JCW... The 2015 model IS a bit "long in the nose," but I like the electronics and engine management. That said, my '02 has two "electronics" issues I need to have fixed. The LED display in the RPM gauge is dead, which is a drag because of the temperature and "miles left" readings, and my gas tank shows "empty" when I restart the car with the engine warm. With those two issues in mind, one wonders if additional electronics means additional issues "down the road."
+XCARFilms I really like this presenter. He reminds me of a young Richard Hammond. Almost like Top Gear of old, but with a younger/refreshing twist. Almost like the Mini's evolution. Good job. Keep it up chaps.
I agree with what he says at the end about how many people are only familiar with the mini that came out in the early 2000's.
people just don't like charge. i think this the best mini yet, its about time they scraped the old engine that should have been gone with the supercharger both had too many problem Cant Wait to buy one
Fiesta ST still the God of 1.6l hot hatches
Interesting perspective to like it :) Only how I damage my car on downshifts?
love both the origial and the modern mini.. thanks bye!
good narrative!
Is there a way to turn off the rev match feature, similar to turning off hill assist?
I had a 2006 Mini until a few months ago and it was my favorite used car I have ever owned. Test drove a new one and what surprised me is for how much bigger it is on the outside, it's not that much bigger on the inside. That's what makes the size of the 1st gen new mini so impressive- the ratio of exterior size to interior room. Still, the new one was definitely faster and fun to drive, so now I'm thinking the decision is between a 17-18 Cooper S or a 18-19 Fiesta ST as they are priced about the same. I'm leaning Fiesta but it's a hard call.

@buildmorefarms100 I did end up getting a Fiesta ST and I love it. Cheers.
As a dyed-in-the-wool Original Mini Fanatic, I hate the new car for all the reasons the journalist mentions here. That said, this is the first really, really accurate assessment of the merits and de-merits of the new larger F-platform Mini. It's also the most articulate criticism of my personal distaste for the car. I still think my '07 Mini Cooper S with 83K on the clock is "bags more" fun than the new car. But BMW had to update the car-they are in the business of selling premium automobiles-so the new. larger format fits in with the family neatly, riding on the 1-series chassis. But I still find it sad that the refinement of the new car has given it a kind of generic look and feel-compared with the old car. And kudos to the journalist for noting that the MINI has "bags more" character than the Focus ST, which will look dated in short order I'm afraid.
Well I'm definitely in early 90's as he described, but I still wish they were a bit smaller. They seem to get bigger every year.

They do but Mini want to be where the money is so that they can carry on making cars for those who love them like me.
This is the first time I hear from a media who can make the exact point on "MINI getting bigger". Yes, the real group of customers that will grow and sustain the future sales are those who don't have real experience with the classic Mini. And for them, MINI is not a cheap economic cars like the Fiesta, 107 or even those Japanese K-Car that are "closer" to the classic Mini in terms of size, price segment and purposes. MINI is a branded fashionable item with driving fun.
I prefer the classic mini's but this is a great car.
How does the cooper S compare to the jc works?
Are you guys going to do XComments again?
As a car enthusiast born in the 1990s, My opinion of the Modern mini is a conflicted one, In many ways I am torn by the BMWness and bloated size by comparison, but I have no context to appreciate the original mini other that most of what I've read. Because of my age I simply cannot experience the original mini with a fully open mind as all reference for me is from vehicles far newer than the original. What I think you captured best about the mini is summarized in the end. To me and my generation the mini is a different car. One defined by character, iconic silhouette, and practicality(or lack there of depending on your pocketbook). I like the mini, and the new mini looks to be just as exciting . . . except for that front grill, its too exciting the way it is.
Really want a Cooper S just can't afford to pay £17,000 for one that is two years old let alone 20 grand odds for a newer one. Might get a Fiesta ST or and a Cooper S R56 version in the mean time while i wait for prices on these to drop if they ever do. Excellent little Car Though just bit expensive
People really need to get over their classic Minis and listen to this guy. If you dont like the look then the drive alone is worth some praise. There will never again be a car like the classic Mini for the reasons described in this video so stop complaining that its too big and expensive. Its a premium hatchback that rivals the Golf and Astra type cars, so its still the smallest in its class if you ask me.
I still can't get too excited about these things, and not because I have any sort of affection for the original version either. They're just so wilfully stylised and funky (apologies for using that word in this context). For me, choosing a MINI is too obvious. It's almost an admission to the rest of the world that you have no imagination, kind of like choosing a Golf. You buy one because you heard they were good from someone and you'll be able to sell it later without losing too much. Sensible? Yes. Boring? Very much. Not only that, but from day one they were adopted by estate agents and used as mobile billboards. And doesn't that fly in the face of the whole 'cool' image they're supposed to have? Hmm. Enjoyed the video though!

well the golf is a fantastic all-round car, that's why people buy it, you can't go wrong with it. the mini is all about style not practicality, and even though it has good driving feel its metrosexuality if not gayness is too extreme for most people.
as a classic mini owner. i still hate it.

Tomislav Culak It still has the original shell. The one thing that makes it a mini. Very few people say the new minis are better. That's a very unpopular opinion.
I thought heel toe was to protect your gearbox/synchros, rather than the clutch. If anything higher RPMs would shock the clutch-plate more no?
@iulianpopa8766
10 жыл бұрын
No, think about it. When downshifting without rev matching, you're dropping a fast spinning clutch on a 1000rpm flywheel, that can't be good for the clutch.
The answer is yes as usual even the old version R56 :)
Why didn't you demonstrate the rev matching.
I owned a 2004 JCW Mini and i didnt like 2 things, 1. The suspension was as hard as concrete 2. The plastics inside the cabin rattled like armageddon was coming down. Do you think the new mini has improved these things?
@darexdarex
10 жыл бұрын
It's a known fact and mentioned in every single review that you'll watch or read, that the answer to both questions is "yes". Build quality is vastly improved, and suspension much less punishing.
90% as good to drive as a Fiesta but better appointed (in terms of options and interior items), insanely economical and ultimately a bit more practical because of it's slightly larger size. In other words one of, if not THE ultimate daily drivers out there. Yeah, I'd buy one!

the mini is still smaller than the fiesta actually... roll on the clubman!
What is the intro song?
Fiesta ST is an economy car...I like the Mini much better.
Yes
Great review, as always!
You are the only person in the universe that i've heard say that the Fiesta ST is a very serious car.
Phil Collins?
I would prefer it to the fiesta, but I might be biased as I used to crawl around these one’s predecessors when I was a child visiting the BMW Welt.
Why not make a mini more along the size of the up? But with a little more power? Then the name might actually mean something...
Nice!
The 370z has the rev match system too
just watched this brilliant Mini video again & I've noticed something different, all I'm going to say are Eye brows.
The front grille holes (intake?) look terrible :( I like my R53 Cooper S a lot, but the new ones are a bit too bulky. I always get a good laugh when I park next to a new Countryman :D They're huuuuuge! The new engines and tech features seem really nice though and performance is pretty good. I really didn't like the new ST at all when I test drove it. Big, clumsy, plasticy, wobbly, exterior is decent though. But the only hatchback I have to compare is my own, which is very tight in comparison.
What about turbo lag in the Cooper S?
@DANIELCRAIGO

Twin scrolling no lag.
Would take my ST over a mini anyday
this is why I own one.
Song at 2:44?
A Mini is not a car, is a Mini!
i owned a cooper s now and its a blast. Is not the fastest but it handles perfect on corners. Better than my ex genesis coupe and my friends focus st. The st is faster, but come on does ford is more reliable than mini(bmw)?
If still love to have a original mini in the garage
Cooper S is a better car in terms of premium & luxury of the brand but fiesta ST is better in terms of the drive and fun you have whilst behind the wheel
I'm still waiting what the electric Mini will be like. If they manage to put a bigger battery in it than the BMW i3 and the range is even 150-200km, I'd be fine with that. Too bad it'll very likely cost over 60k€ here.
Yes. Overall the new BMW Mini has grown about 50-60% in size - going by the 2019 model as compared to the 1959 original. However, the average human being has also grown in size, which has literally driven the corresponding growth in the cars’ size. Saying this, the MINI is still a mini when compared to other cars of the current era, on the road. Effectively, then, EVERY car model has grown in size.
i like the old whan still the most. but in the case of have a crash, maybe you wil servive in the new mini. instead of the old mini cooper. well i do like the mutch loved mini is evolving to the new mini's. part of thet i love the old mini more then the new mini/bmw.
...But it *IS* built in Britain so I'm happy
i want a 2015 mini but i cnt stand thoes big tailights. interior is luxurious
great
No no I must be in a parallel universe this mini is BIG?!?!?
He mentioned £14000 for the mini, but that's for the mini one.I would guess the cooper s he was driving with all those extras would be over £23000 where as the fiesta st would be about £5000 cheaper.
@v811gfg
10 жыл бұрын
I just went and built my own mini online and with most of the extras it came in at £24150 compared too the £17200 I got my Fiesta st2 with all the extras. Is it worth that much for the bucket fulls of character it might have, and as for the smile......... you drive a Fiesta st and then you will smile because you have nearly an extra £7000 in you pocket and a better drivers car.
Why is everything a debate with this guy? It's a car, not philosophy
There are plenty of other modern cars out there that are smaller and lighter then the mini that still compile with all the safety regulations, i don't get what is so difficult about bringing the car closer to its roots?
Yea Rev Matching. :)
I have test driven two different fiesta STs 2016 and all 3 cooper s minis (cooper s/cooper s with jcw kit /jcw auto full spec) and the cooper s with or without the jcw kit is more of a car than fiesta st can possibly be... And so so so many more things whi h u get in the mini than the ST. And interior is way way better and the cooper s is not only way more fun to drive but it is faster (obviously, cause its a 2L Turbo) fiesta is also fast, both are very fast with stage 2 and stage 3 but, the cooper s just gets faster and is just more car for your money....
Good video fantastic cars have had one of every generation all works shiploads more class than a Ford
You mentioned the size, it's German-ness and 'It's not as good as the original, it's just not a proper mini' and you briefly mentioned the price. However you didn't address the fact that the original mini was made to be a practical, light, economical car that still had plenty of room for your kids and luggage. This and the price is what made the Mini great. A car for the masses, a car that Britain needed in a Fuel Crisis. And as luck had it it was fun to drive. And you're not gonna find any of these qualities in the new Mini except for the handling. You can hardly fit 3 people in there. You almost can't have this as your only car because let's be honest when it comes to practicality you might as well get a Porsche. Sure sóme of the charm remained, it's a nice car and I'd like to own one as a second car. But you omitted the biggest complaints of the fans of the old Mini. It's a bit like the New Beetle. Sure it looks a little like the old one if you squint hard enough. But it doesn't capture the idea behind the original. It shares the name, but it's not a spiritual successor and that annoys people. It's just a shell around a car that has very little to do with the original. (And you forgot to answer the question you posted in the title. Whether it's better then the Fiesta ST.)
This guys sounds just like jimmy page haha
the new mini is not a real mini or as good as the old mini but the given that, it is a better mini for america which is where bmw really wanted it to succeed, dont get me wrong it is a good car but i personally prefer the old mini
The Mini Cooper S is an overall better looking car, interesting interior and dash too. I'd rather look like a bender in a mini than a chav in a Fiesta.
