I ran into the same issue doing this yesterday. Not a 5 minute job at all. Used a grinder to cut off the outside shock loop and used the vise grips in combination with the 8mm socket to take the stud out with that large metal shock inner sleeve/bushing. Once I had it out, I was able to pound it out on a bench vise and cleaned it up and re-used it with some anti-seize to prevent it from sticking in the future. Thanks for posting the video.

A drywall cutout tool might also be a solution to removing the rubber shock loop. Removing the shock from the bushing should then be possible.

Good video, I had a real fight and the same issue with my CX-5. I suggest to anyone doing this job to order a brand new stud, nut and washer for both sides. Those studs never broke free from the shock.

I got the nut off, but can’t get the washer off or the stud out, how were you able to get the old shock off?

I ordered a new nut and stud from Mazda and cut the shock off with a saws all

You are the man!! I appreciate you making this video. 5:00 visegripz i hope that works! Unfortunately i dont have a vise to put the bushing in. I used PB blaster, lots of propane heat and 4lb hammering 🔨 🔥 I hope i can get it w/o any other issues.

I just did my CX-5 yesterday. Thought the same thing, 20 min job no problem … 6 hours later I had to take a grinder and chisel to get the bushing off it was so seized up … the other side mount is about to goo too it’s corroding bad , like you said live to fight another day. I’ll deal with that one when that side breaks lol

These methods are ideal but using heat near a pressurized gas tube could be dangerous!

I just replaced the rear shocks on my 2018 Mz3, and was confronted by seized studs. I watched a video on utube and tried to unbolt them, but no dice. After looking at the whole picture, I realized that I could unbolt the knuckle from the rest of the suspension and tilt it out far enough to remove the bottom of the shock. Reassembly was the reverse of removal. Two hours total, the second side went way quicker. It helps to have access to air tools. Hope this helps someone!

I thought I'd find comments from CX-5 DIYers. Same shitty setup. The top rear shock mount is aluminum and turns to powder. (Good luck if you can get a replacement in the Northeast this past Fall..) Then onto this "5-minute job" (I said the same thing to myself! hahahah) Not sure wtf the boys in Hiroshima were thinking when they designed this...maybe they're still pissed about...well..you know. Ended up going to my local Midas where I think cutting tools came into play..I don't need to know.

Guys i just did this. Just go to main dealer and buy replacement stud. 14 euro. Pure hardship cutting the shock bushing off the the stud itself.

I have a cx5 and I’m taking an angle grinder to that inner sleeve. I don’t have torch so I’m cutting it. It’s definitely it 5 minutes. I thought the angle grinder would cut quickly but nope.

I have a 2019 Mazda CX-5 I had the same problem with the same kind of bolt I thought it would be easy peasy!! Looks like I’m headed the same way but it’s beyond my skill set. Does anyone know of this bolt can be replaced with a bolt with hex head on it and do you know the exact size of the bolt. I would appreciate the help.

Me and my brother is stuck on his Mazda 3 (2016) and the metal bushing is stuck on the bolt at the bottom that’s seized. Any help?

You have a broken coil spring this is causing shock and mount damage. Usually on the passenger side.
