I have a 2015 v6 accord sedan. I replaced the original starter since it was not engaging and I had to hit the start button 2,3 sometimes 5 or 6 times. Replaced the starter with what I thought was the original part from Bosch. Had the same issues. Bought an actual Honda branded starter part # 31200-5G0-A04 and everything is back to normal, hasn’t had any skipping/ non-engaging behavior at all. Had the service bulletin flex plate bolt shift done and didn’t help, Dealer wanted over $900 to put the proper starter in. Starter was $309 from a reputable eBay seller and it took me about an hour. I took the battery stand out, really not as hard as others have said, two bolts underneath that don’t need to come out all the way since the stand has slots not holes for those two bolts. Obviously much easier to take the radiator hose bracket off instead of the battery stand. I was just following my Haynes manual. Gotta say, cars and their manuals ain’t what they used to be. The plastic clips that hold the front air intake on are giving me grief since I removed them twice since the starter was changed twice. I have one of those universal clip kits but they seem to be either too small or too big.

this fix from Honda is absurd, let's just weight the roulette wheel to hopefully hide the damaged teeth due to poor engineering of the starter/ring gear clearance and hope these cars have too many miles for a judge to order a recall. Worked for Honda in the past and I'm ashamed of how they're handling this.

I have struggled with this problem for a year. I have performed the TSB and put a rebuilt starter and still the same problem. Don't not put a aftermarket or rebuilt starter you need the latest starter oem from Honda 31200-5G0-A04. Ending with A04 seems to have solve the problem. It's been two weeks no issue

I worked on a 2014 Crosstour, when trying to start, the dash lights went nuts when pushing the start button, the starter tried to engage, but just slammed the pinion gear against the flywheel, like it had a bad solenoid. However, ended up being a bad ignition relay. Look in the fuse panel under the hood, drivers side, near the brake reservoir. There are two, blue relays. Try interchanging them. (Notice they are the same serial numbers.) If the problem goes away, change them out. Found on Amz. prime $14.00. I changed to starter anyway, because I didn’t know how many times the driver had a misfired, but did not do the flywheel trick. No need in THIS case. Very specific to this symptom. Going 2mo.’s np.

What purpose would that serve even if you spun the flywheel two or three position, eventually the starter will still hit the bad teeth marks correct, unless the flexplate is slightly warped, the converter is free-floating the only thing that holds the converter so the teeth will line up with the starter is the flexplate, seems logical to try to bend a flexplate toward the converter, but that might cause an imbalance in the flexplate, it is very time-consuming and very very expensive or replace replace the torque converter and flexplate and the starter, there has to be a simpler fix,

Just bought a 2015 crosstour (same engine and all that as the 2015 accord, it's based off the accords) and when I called Honda with the vin they said mine did not have this problem. Twice when I first got it it didn't start but it didn't sound like grinding. A month later it just did it again with the engine warm and it was grinding, so clearly I have this problem too. But just a starter isn't going to fix it? I have to get under the car and turn the flywheel and somehow that's suppose dto solve the problem? Iw orry how long it's been doing it and if it's ground anything down in there. 101k miles

I have had start-up issues on my 2013 EX-L v6 since 2019 intermittently. At first I would press start button and no sound, but engine wouldn't start & only the power would come on. I'd turn off the power (no foot on brake). Then second try, the brake pedal would be very hard to press - wouldn't really depress much at all - but enough so the sensor would allow the starter to engage. It always start second try. Would be months between with daily driving, 2-3 starts a day. Then I started to hear a grinding/whirring noise when I tried to start the car. First time I thought I hit the button even though the engine was already one. Nope. Grinding/whirring noise, engine didn't start, power came on. Usually would start next time I tried. Then sometimes 2 tries. Each subsequent time it has happened I get the grinding/whirring noise. Friday it started fine in the morning. When leaving work I had to try 4x. When I arrived home. I turned engine off, then turned it back on. No problem. This morning the grinding noise. It took 2 tries. Drove to a store. It started fine at the store to return home . Could be a dozen or more starts again before it happens. I hadn't taken it to a mechanic because it's intermittent and might not happen for them. But I think I'm going to take it to Honda dealership and have them check it. Hopefully the TSB gear wheel rotation & new starter will be enough. Already have over 75K miles on the car and need expensive timing belt replacement. Very disappointing in a Honda. Should be a recall.
