2015 Honda Accord Sport - Extend the Factory Head Unit to the Trunk

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you want to replace your factory audio system with an aftermarket solution, you have to keep the factory head unit connected to keep the upper display (including the backup camera) working. If you want Apple CarPlay or Android Auto this is a great solution for keeping your upper display working.

    RIP Terry, thank you for this! I just did this to my 2015 sport and wanted to share a few things, that may hopefully, help others. First, it isn't necessary to de-solder the needed connectors except for the H (video cable) connector (which is very hard to remove, just like Terry mentioned), just take a dremel and cut the pins off flush with the board, there is more than enough of the pins left to solder on wires. Also, as far as the H-connector goes, my donor radio came with a cable that was too short to make it work. I went to the salvage and went out and looked at one of the junk cars, the cable that plugs into the back of the radio for the video connector (imid display) has the same end on the harness that plugs into the upper imid display. So, if you are able to get them to cut the harness, you can find that connector in two places, if needed. Second, all microphone cables are not created equal for this application. I had a strong suspicion that I was unable to get the H-Cable to work due to poor shielding on the microphone cable. I tried four cables before my suspicion was validated. So, I can save you some money, time, and headache. I ended up getting the screen to work using a GLS audio mic patch cord from Amazon, ASIN: B003JJQMD8; this may be the cable Terry used if you try to read the writing in his video. On the first three cables, the screen would either be all white or would flicker and sometimes show an image. Lastly, I was able to bend the mounting brackets from the donor radio to make the mounting bracket in the trunk. I put a rivnut in an existing hole on one side and used a coupling nut attached to a screw that was sticking through the package panel from above. This was a lot of work, mostly because of the trouble I had with the microphone cable. I'm still glad I did it, I love having carplay and better sounding hands-free calling. I used the SWI-CP5 to retain my steering wheel controls, I did have trouble getting it to program. Everything worked, except it would not answer calls from the steering wheel controls. I contacted PAC's customer support, which was phenomenal, but we still couldn't get it to work. Turns out my Kenwood unit dmx907s needed a firmware update, that fixed the issue.

    I have a donor JAE MX48 twinaxial donor plug, but the attached original twinaxial used by Honda is too short to solder, so I will need to disassemble the male plug to solder it. Since it’s propriety, and JAE doesn’t sell it, has anyone figured out how to open it? Very good take on posting that all microphone cables are not equal! I’m planning to use RG-108 since it’s an RF cable and should have more than enough isolation and speed capability.

  • @joshsmith0314

    @joshsmith0314

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Hssengship I actually ran into the issue of the cable on the male plug being too short, after multiple cable trials. You can cut it along the narrow, long side (with a dremel cutting wheel) and pry it open to get the board out and friction seems to hold it in place once it's reassembled and placed in the plug. Or, it looks like mouser might have it under part # 656-MX48002HQ6R200

    Great questions. I realize now that I forgot to show the other harness that I had made about a year ago. It's been in the car so long that I had forgot about it. That harness ties in the aftermarket head unit, steering wheel control and factory head unit by connecting the vehicle male 24 pin main connector to all three. So I have two harnesses only because I did this in two steps. If you're going to do it in one step, a single harness will work. For your aftermarket head unit, the only thing it needs from the vehicle is Constant 12V, ACC 12V and Ground. It will get SWC from your Steering Wheel Controller. Your Steering Wheel Controller also needs Constant 12V, ACC 12V and Ground. Plus it needs A22 from the main 24 pin main. It's a pink wire that is SWC Vol +/- Channel +/-. And it needs C9 which is a light blue wire from the C harness which is the HFL wire. I know this might sound complicated but it's pretty straight forward. I HIGHLY recommend the you go on driveaccord.net and look me up. TMVB is my user name. You can find my thread that has the wiring diagram. I really recommend you go there and download the wiring diagram before you dig in. It will make this a lot easier.

    I have no idea how to add Lane Watch. But I suspect it would be difficult. People think that the Honda uses one wiring harness for all trim levels and if you want a feature from a higher trim (Lane Watch, heated seats, etc) that you can just buy the component and plug it in. The reality is Honda makes wiring harnesses unique to each trim level. So there are no connectors on a Sport in the right door ready to plug in a Lane Watch mirror. I'm sure it can be done, but solving the wiring harness will be the biggest hurdle.

    Ahh - now I get what he was trying to say. He was saying female connectors when he meant male - that was throwing me off. Haven't heard from the couple of guys that are pursuing sourcing the connectors. But even if they do, my opinion is buying the male connectors isn't going to be useful because you'll have to figure out how to populate them with pins and wires. I would reach out to the eBay sellers that are offering used head units and ask them if they have the males connectors with wire pigtails. I know of at least one person that was successful in getting the male connectors that way. BTW my eBay seller was nav4pro and he was easy to deal with. I'd recommend reaching out to him/her and ask if they have the male connectors for sale.

    I've sourced a few from salvage cars over the years. I've also asked the sellers if they still had the car and could snip the plugs, some said yes.

    Kenroy Harris Requested to follow you. Swavey83. Would like to know how you did yours since I'm about to do the same with a Joying head unit. Have you bypassed the factory amp by chance?

    This video is gold!... Thanks! I just ordered all cables and donor radio to put my factory radio in the trunk. You laid out the blueprint perfectly.

    Luis Salas hey man I got this all figured out.. I think. Except for the illumination from the new deck to the climate control. My question is what wire does he tap for illumination. Is it the orange wire on the climate control harness?

    Matt Pesh I believe the D connector should control the illumination. I haven't hooked mine up yet.

    Go to his blog in the first video. Some guy says that pretty much any wire to the climate control will work for illumination. And he uses the Gray wire in the middle of the climate control which he says works fine.
