2015 Ford Taurus SHO PTU transfer case fluid change

I have been wanting to record each fluid change for a while now and I finally got around to doing the PTU (or transfercase) this time so I hope this helps your next PTU change out!
I left the video detailed as possible so it ended up being super long but I wanted to make sure that each step was shown in full (mostly un-edited) so that there are less unknowns for the people watching.
I will be recording the RDU (rear differential) fluid change next as that is the last item on this car's fluid list.
I am very happy to receive suggestions and your input on the quality of the video, I went with no music or un-necessary text and tried my best to verbally explain each step so feel free to leave a comment on how you found this video :)

I just recently did this on my 15 SHO! A couple things I did to make it easier, I used a gearwrench 90t locking flex head 3/8 13 inch long ratchet to clear the hot components and you want one that locks otherwise you'll be fighting trying to get the square to line up. It also gives enough leverage to crack the fill plug loose and not over tighten when reinstalling. I used a 6 quart EWK fluid extractor pump and it took a bit but it definitely has suction power. I used a half quart of Amsoil 75w 140 and just filled the ptu till it was slowly dripping out the plug. Also the exact same tool set up can be used to easily service the rear differential which I think is more forgiving than the PTU. I did mine 30k miles ago and recently did a check up on it and the Amsoil 80w 90 I put in was still the same color as when I changed last time and almost no metal on the plugs magnet. If only ford put a drain plug on both the headache of servicing would at least be manageable but it is what it is though. Also I do use the amsoil easy pack bags with a hose attached to the top and it makes refilling both gear boxes a breeze 😎

Good insight! My purpose with this video is to get all of the SHO people around to have at least my method to work with as shops can charge a bit.

A drain pan (under the car) might be a good addition to your fluid change regimen. Much better than polluting your yard!

I use alcohol and paper towels on the asphalt and underpan of the car after the change, usually there isn’t much to collect but good point! It would save some paper towels.

It takes almost 16 oz. Half a quart. Great that you do this every 5000 Miles. Ford now recommends 30000 Miles. My shop charged $150 plus oil for this job. Luckily you don't have a PTU with a cooler. Those are even harder but they have a drain plug. It's filling them that the issue. I do most of my own work are my cars. But it way easier to pay a shop to do this then getting my arms burned. LOL. Btw. Good video

Do you have the air flow cover on the bottom of the engine? You should get that as to directs air past the PTU to help cool it.

you don't need to change tpu every 5000 miles? it's good at least 30,000 miles

I have semi-stubby hands and it's not an easy reach but if you can get a shorty ratchet it should fit pretty easily. You still get roughly 30-35 deg turn at most.

This doesn’t ever need servicing per ford maintenance scheduler

Power Transfer Unit also known as a transfercase in fwd based awd systems, my transfercase is done this way, not all SHO transfercases have the same ports unfortunately so this method best suits most if not all of the models with the v6 awd.
