2015 Ford Edge Ecoboost Titanium Review and Road Test - Detailed in 4K

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The large two-row crossover seems to be a rare breed. With compacts getting less compact and folks supersizing their people carriers, Ford decided to redesign the Edge to keep it from going the way of the Venza and Accord Touring.

My mother rented a 2018 Edge titanium back in December 2017 with the option group 301A. Five months later, the transmission failed on her '04 explorer; however, she bought a 2017 Edge titanium 300A ("00" means base) that was a former rental vehicle in late may 2018. It has lots of room, high-quality materials and no Vista roof.

I like the interior & the around view Cameras. Too bad you couldn't get the Murano with the Edge styling on the outside because the interior of the Murano has no close match that appealed to me as much in this category. I like your comparison info at the end. Awesome job. Thanks.

Loved the review. No surprise as I depend on and enjoy your weekly reviews. However, I do have a few issues...or questions. First...what about the back corner/side vision? Like you I find the Nissan designs over the top. But this is especially because I hate poor or difficult corner glances for lane changes. How was this car's views? Second...I think, as I found while driving the VW Touareg, the screen location is to low in the Nissan. This forced me to have difficulty backing up and having to keep working up and down, afraid I was missing something both ways. I like Ford keeping the screen high so your glances between window, mirrors and back up camera all easy.

Paulose54 I like the Ford V6 better but the Grand Cherokee's ZF 8-Speed automatic is by far the better transmission. The chassis of the Ford is tighter and its lower to the ground but you have less room to add wider after market tires than you do on the Jeep. I'd probably get the Ford as long as your towing and off road requirements are low.

I saw your 2016/2017 Escape review and had to come back to review your comments on fuel economy on the Edge. The Escape actually seemed to get worse mileage than the Edge with the same 2.0L Turbo engine. That doesn't make sense, since the Edge is a larger vehicle. What's up with that? I was impressed to hear the mileage is so good in highway driving, which is what I hope to be doing more of in the next few years (although a hybrid version would be very welcome for my city driving). Although the mileage takes a bit of a hit in the Edge, I want a more comfortable drive for long trips, so the Edge seems to "edge out" the Escape.

I really enjoyed your review. My wife and I are considering a Ford Edge purchase sometime next year when the 2016 models are out. What do you think are areas that Ford should improve on with the next model Ford Edge? I personally wish they could improve combined gas mileage. I realize that's difficult, but would make my buying decision much easier as I commute about 30 miles 3 times a week in highway traffic that can be stop and go (Washington DC area highway traffic).

I've heard about coolant intrusion into the 2.0L ecoboost engines and I've also seen that Ford continues to offer this SUV equipped with the (optional) 3.5L V6 with the notorious internal water pump that is very expensive to replace. Only the ST model seems to be the most reliable with the 2.7L ecoboost V6. I was about to get an SEL with the 2.0L ecoboost, but because of the coolant intrusion I better go with a car equipped with a reliable basic engine as the 2.5L naturally aspirated found in the Ford Fusion and Ford Escape. They are slow but reliable. Fusion and Escape 2015 2017-up Very reliable years. 2010-2012 2.5L and 3.0L V6 rock solid engines.

Thank you very much for your top notch reviews, absolutely nothing compares. Based mostly on your reviews, our SUV shopping got narrowed to two options! A Loaded 2016 Ford Edge Titanium or an Acura MDX with Nav package. We do care most about: Quiet cabin, Comfortable ride, dependability and long term ownership costs and last but not least that extra seating row. This list was in order of importance. Due to our Canadian dollar pricing, the two options are very close in price, obviously the ford has a bit more tech stuff and a more modern infotainment system, but the MDX has, hopefully, the peace of mind our current Accord has. Which would you pick? Or is there a third option we missed?

While I do think that the Ford Fusion and 2015 Ford Explorer rip straight from Aston Martin and Range Rover respectively I think the new Edge's resemblance of the Hyundai Sante Fe is really just a coincidence. When I saw the front of the new Edge I thought it looked a lot like the Taurus. And the Taurus has had this similar look for 4-5 years now I think.

Great review. Only thing I would do is change the description from saying refresh. This isn't a refresh, this is an all new model of the ford edge. It shares almost nothing with the predecessor, the only thing really being the mid level engine the 3.5l v6. The 2.0 ecoboost is the all new version of this engine, and the 2.7l ecoboost is new as well. The chassis and body work share nothing with its predecessor as well.

You've done an excellent job "selling" this Ford Edge. Certainly better than that silly Ford commercial showing a professional woman driving around downtown Vancouver blowing through red lights, with the tagline "The Unstoppable Ford Edge". Ironic, since the previous Edge was known for long breaking distances. Did you have a 60-0 distance? This seems like a vast improvement over the prior version, and a very competitive choice. I own it's old sister car, the Mazda CX-7. Did you ever review a CX-7? What are your quick thoughts about that? Rumor has it that Mazda might revive it as a 3-row crossover.

Blind spots in both front corners (where window pillars are), as well as tall fenders make for uncomfortable turning. Seat shape is uncomfortable on long trips, the rounded edge makes backs of legs uncomfortable. Also a big future problem is that the way the door bottoms wrap under, they create a ledge (L'Edge haha) that collects road dirt and salt. I see this as a potential area for rot! Add to this all the things I've read about Eco Boost engine problems with carbon build up etc.. fuel ecomomy on this car is awful!. I have a Chrysler Town and Country van with the large V6 that when compared side by side to the edge on the same trip far outshine the Edge in fuel economy. This car is on my don't keep list! I have been a Ford Customer for many years, they have let me down on the last few vehicles.

@@gworld4291 it's a crossover vehicle with a 4 cylinder. Not a Ford Expedition (which I also owned).. comparatively speaking the Edge was bad on gas given it's year and the technology. Sure if it was a full sized SUV I wouldn't have that much to say, but it's not. Update I opted for a new Equinox, first Chevy ever. Very happy with it.

@SNC N Idaho we almost hit a woman in a Lowe's parking lot one night. It was dark and she was walking across staying in step with the blind spot. She was not seen until the last minute. Surprised Ford hasn't been party to a law suit.

The Grand Cherokee does not handle on the highway with confidence. It is also one of the few SUV's to still get only a 3 star rollover rating. The Tahoe/Yukon being others.

You said in the murano review that it, and the edge were tied for 2nd place behind the cherokee. So why is the ford now ahead of the murano. OR was at the ford the time of the murano review a 2014 edge?

I'd go with the murano because personally I like the design better although the edge does look very nice it looks kinda like a Hyundai and I don't like Hyundais design. Also the interior is much better looking in my opinion and it seems to have better materials.

Get the Murano or take a look at the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport which is the best car in this class. The Edge's exterior styling looks like crap.

Alex, for someone with smaller needs than Edge, do you know if Ford's C-Max Hybrid Wagon will be much changed for 2016? If so, would you review it again? I believe last time you reviewed it was in 2012.

mountainhobo The rumor mill tells us that it will be refreshed for 2016, the EU version has already been shown but Ford has said zero about when/if that will come to the USA. I suspect it will since Ford decided a while back that its less expensive to harmonize products than havd different cars made here and there. We should know more in January but dont expect too much of a change to the engine / transmission.

Alex on Autos Thanks! I drove a previous version in Europe some years ago, but it was a rental, so a bit drab, and the diesel engine had a narrow power band, so lots of shifting to keep in the sweet spot. Other than that, it was a nice city vehicle with tons of cargo room.

mountainhobo We have a 2013 C-Max Hybrid SE and love it. We never got 47mpg but average 42 mixed and 40 hwy. It has great power and torque but the cloth seats get tiring over an hour and don't have adjustable lumbar. I wish we had the leather seats for the lumbar support. The C-Max is so much more substantial than a Prius or Insight.

Ponygt 662 Yes, diesels are great on the highway. In the city the benefit is much smaller, and hybrids are then more practical (C-Max is hybrid in the US) because of lower initial cost and maintenance.

If a wider seatbelt is safer...why not just make static wider seatbelts?

  • @nickscott4272

    @nickscott4272

    9 жыл бұрын

Arthur S exactly, even a quarter inch could make a difference. Also, incorporating an air bag into the seatbelt is silly and expensive. It would be much easier and more reliable to incorporate the same thing fall harnesses have in them, that is, a bunched up stitched section of seatbelt, where the stiches break when stressed to absorb your forward momentum in a crash. I don't think ford has very good engineers.

The Murano is much more aggressive outside and much more luxurious inside. It is premium product in power and materials compared to the Edge, which is not much different than a Ford Explorer in overall design/styling, particularly inside. This is a more conservative choice, but you have more options with engines and lower prices.

Evander Smart the Murano is overtly done, too much chrome and beige interior which is super difficult to clean, Also I felt the Murano to handle like SHIT, it was no way near as good as EDGE in terms of steering feel, precision, and body control , The EDGE was much much more eager at corners and responds with immediacy while Murano is a slow reactor, The Murano also felt noisier inside, the EDGE can easily rival a BMW,Audi Merc for interior quietness So I dont think the Murano is better, at least for me, the EDGE is 1 of the best American vehicle money can buy

Ponygt 662 I've never had a problem with tan/beige interiors and I actually prefer them over black. I guess if you're getting in your car with grease on yourself or something, then it might be an issue.

Nick Scott No need for grease, even some fat friendly food is enough to ruin it, then comes the colour tan difference after lot of sunlight exposure, arm rests also get the tanning effect, maybe Ur dosent have it, but I ve seen even test drive Muranos with just 10k miles on them having this issue
