2015 BMW R1200R - Ride and Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thanks to Island BMW, in Victoria BC, I had a great time reviewing the 2015 BMW R12000R. What a fantastic road bike! I wish I had a bigger garage and more money...

Nice review. I came to this bike from a 2012 'R' and agree with the lighter feel & lower center of gravity. The quick shiftier is butter smooth under hard acceleration which the only time I use it. Agree that dynamic mode is hard on the street, better for a smooth track. Just took a trip through the southern sierra mountains in CA and it is very 'chuck-able' on fast twisty roads. To answer another comment, "what;s the point of BMWs," this bike is not an all out sport bike but it can keep up with the best, it's not an all out touring bike but is approaching the comfort of the best, If you want an all out sports bike get the 1000RR. Touring? Get a 1200RT or K1600. BMWs are built like a Swiss watch and every time you turn the key you go.

appreciate the review. overall a good one, but i think you've got the Dynamic mode wrong. Some makers call it Dynamic, some Sports, but in essence, it firms things up, quickens the engine response etc etc. And when you have the mechanics and electronics set up that way, the riding style also has to change. If you still ride the bike in a leisurely way, taking it easy while the bike is in Dynamic mode, then you're not gonna like it cos the ride would be too firm, the engine too abrupt. Bottomline, if the bike is in Dynamic mode, you have to be in Dynamic mode too. If you wanna take it easy, don't switch to Dynamic mode.

I rode it for an hour and did some hooligan stuff with it in the city and outside the city. It's definately capable for all type of riding. So don't agree all the way on your review :)

Georges Jentgen Oh I totally agree with you that it can do all types of riding. However, from my point of view it felt most at home not being pushed like a high performance sport bike. Love your feedback (^_^)o

Zordflea if you can could you please explain to me the point of these bmws? I've been into motorcycles for almost my entire 47 years and yet to understand them. It's a $17k motorcycle.... I understand the focus of all the other companies and found your site for the multi. Btw Toronto here :)

Stacey Ecoboost Hmmm... I'll have to think about this before trying to answer. How is BMW Motorrad different from say Harley Davidson, Ducati or Honda? Could be a good topic for a vlog.

zordflea I think it would be great to open the topic up a bit. Of course BMW has a right to be in motorcycles and this one is definitely on my radar now that you've risen it.... but I don't understand the concept. Ducatista is passion for riding and racing heritage of the brand... Harley is wrenching and riding with arch history and the brand stays as true to form as possible even if the bikes are cobbled together. all japanese rides to me are about precision engineering to the point of perfection at the expense of having a 'soul'... BMW besides being for richie-riches the bikes are are over the place... I mean yes there are faves and the 1200GS S1000rr and Highway Bikes are solid performers... It's the middle range of bikes which is pretty much all of them..I have a difficult time understanding what these bikes are trying to convey. Same engine goes into a group... and each group is so odd to the point of having me asking what do I do what that.... Like what I find good about the r1200r is that it reminds me of my v45 sabre from 1983 but even the sabre had a top speed of 165mph ... the r1200r tops at 110ish and it's 2015? ...I'm so confused.

Stacey Ecoboost I recently test rode a Ducati, Yamaha, Honda, and the R1200R model featured in this video. The BMW was in a whole other class. I scratched every other bike off my list. This is just my opinion based on test rides. I also had a previous model (07) r1200r and found it to be a damn near perfect all around bike. You can't really complain about the price because BMW gives you things for that extra money. The bike is not a $7k bike with a $10k logo stuck on it. You get a beautiful engine and engineering resulting in 50/50 weight distribution not to mention loads and loads of tech like dynamic suspension, abs, traction control, heated grips, keyless start, GPS integrated with the riding systems, etc.

how i wish they make a 650 version, even lower. something more affordable, lighter, and not over the top. this is really a beautiful bike but way expensive and has to much power that i will ever need.

Expensive to buy and own. Once you put the BMW panniers and windscreen on it, it's $19,440 US plus tax tag and title.

Those are two very different bikes IMO. I don't know your riding style/preference so it's hard for me to say anything relevant to you. However, without sounding like a prude, I'd say the R1200R is more of a gentleman's bike compared to the S1000R. I'd suggest you test ride both if you can. As motorcycles though, both are excellent examples of BMWs finest.

I test drove this bike last week, i felt it was under powered and the price was just stupid!! So i went i got a KTM 1290 Super Duke!! 4k less and 4times the bike, Unreal torque and just brutal speeds in a blink of an eye!! The bike only needs 3 speeds, top 3 gears are a waste!

Expensive. Boring. Sounds like a scooter. Naff windscreen. Next BMW electronic invention - automatic 'ride by self bikes' so the olds guys can sit at home and watch vlogs and make comments while the bike goes for a safe, unfeeling ride by itself. Oh, gaud, that's me...I'm off for a ride on an r80 - see if I'm alive.
