I just bought a 2017 wrx and its my first turbo as well.I feel like the car is quick from the factory. The car hits boost even when i barely push the throttle. Since mine is a 6speed manual,im wondering if the autos do the same. I mean it seems like im always in boost. In start and stop traffic, the awd makes it take off so fast when I barely give it throttle. I ordered the remark muffler delete catbacks and look forward to them.I hope you love yours as much as I do mine. This car is a beast

Jacob Stabler Its ok. After a month of driving, Im starting to feel like I downgraded from my 14 Accord Coupe v6. I did need a bigger car for my daughter tho. Its a fun car to drive. The biggest thing I hate is how the far pretty much dies between 4500-5k rpm. I mod my cars but everything engine wise seems to need a tune on this car. My advice, talk to as many ppl you know with the car for their opinions. Also check out some FB groups prior. If I could go back, I would have gotten an STI.

Thanks for the video. Subie tech told me to hold off on ECU tune...they can tell if original map was recently restored. There is a frequent problem with EMU...they couldn’t update WRX history after a repair. Flash would have voided the warranty. Instead I got the EMU replaced under warranty because I didn’t use the Accessport (it’s in the box until the warranty expires).

Excellent video, the most informative deep dive into the Cobb AP that I've seen. I just purchased a 2020 WRX Limited, which I've been looking forward to getting for a LONG time. I will tune it at some point, but probably not while it's under warranty. This car was way too expensive to risk losing my warranty, at least not this soon. I agree that the factory tune is definitely not great. The car is not very smooth to drive, but I will tolerate it at least for the first 30,000 miles or so. I plan to get regular oil analyses done along the way to monitor for engine wear. If no abnormal wear is detected, I will probably tune the car somewhere around 30k - 35k, which is only 1.5 years of driving for me.

Best mod by far is a universal Subaru flex fuel kit from eBay saving 200-250$ from buying same thing branded by Cobb and then getting a flex fuel tune. Hands down best money spent. And if you bundle the ap purchase with their e tune then you save 100-200$ on that as well. Just went e50 with universal flex kit and power gains are insane. 360/360.

Looks like the setup process has been streamlined vs the 2000s WRXs. My 02 required you to plug in a pair of green cables and then pug in an included bypass cable before you could install the access port. A bit of a pain in the butt as those plugs and cables were jammed up under the dash on the driver's side and you basically had to either lay down on the floor looking up into the guts of the dash (not comfortable) or do it upright by kissing the dash and blindly reaching your hands underneath and try to find and plug in the cables by feel. I just got an 18 WRX and am looking to throw a Cobb AP at it down the road and it is nice to know I'm not going to need to take Yoga classes to dick around with cables under the dash.

I dont have a warranty...but what if you just detuned it and took the Cobb back out before taking it in to Subaru. Im in my first wrx debating if i should get a tuner. I had one for my 03 gt mustang and it was a huge game changer. I had it tuned to race mode. Was an automatic but had 1, 2 and then drive. I could hit 55 in first and 90 in second. So i could cruise on the freeway at 80. Speedy guy comes up on me. Drop it in to second and matt it to the floor and that car took off. Was so much fun. But my wrx is pretty fast already dont want to sacrifice reliability to go a lil faster unless it really effects the overall drivability in a positive way.

I'd make sure to pick low torque tunes if you like to drive it hard to avoid connecting rod stress (just my opinion)

Best video on the AP I've seen yet. I have a 2015 wrx and I'm way overdue to try the AP. In my experience the stock tune is difficult to drive smoothly from a stop, through first gear, and into second. Like you said, when you start out from stop it's like there's a dead zone in the pedal--nothing happens when you first step on the gas, then all of a sudden the engine starts revving a bit too high, which makes starting out without jerking kind of tricky. You have to take extra time and modulate the clutch more carefully than you should have to. My question is: what kind of difference does the AP make in this area... is it a big difference, or just a minor improvement? Thanks!

You will want to get the COBB intake if you don't plan on getting a protune/etune since COBB has a stage 1+ map for that specific intake available. If you are going to get a protune/etune then I would recommend Grimmspeed. The axleback won't matter for performance/reliability so I would just go with whatever you think looks the best.

Hi David, what you are looking to do would definitely be just fine. I absolutely think the best place to put your money after an accessport is a custom tune tho - it will make more power, be the most reliable and your car will run the best. There really are no downsides as long as you choose a good tuner (I recommend Ron Watson) you can do an E-Tune so your location doesn't matter. I would also consider doing muffler deletes rather than the magnaflow if you DON'T plan on doing a downpipe. The cat back with the stock downpipe isn't going to be that much louder and the muffler deletes with the stock down pipe are a nice aggressive sound but nothing too over the top - just my $0.02

I'm new to this device but not new to tuning. I thought for most tuners you can flash your car with them but then unplug the tuner and the car's ecu will remain flashed. But at the end you make it seem like if you unplug the tuner after uploading the tune it still removes the tune. Did i miss understand that or is this correct?

  • @DJWolf

    @DJWolf

You do not have to leave the Accessport plugged in - once the tune is uploaded it will remain. There is an option to change the tune on the fly which happens instantly but will not stay stored on the ECU but you can choose which way you want to load the tune.

You can use nay exhaust combo as long as it’s catted. The CAI is a different story because it depends on the tuning size and the placement of the MAF. So I would either stick with a Cobb intake or just go for a custom turn which should get you a lot more power anyway.

@@rallyfreak08 I got an 18 back in July so I feel your pain. I bought an AP yesterday and flashed the stage 1 tune and all those problems were gone. It does feel like a totally different car, like many people say, in some ways good in others not so much. I love the lack of rev hang and that boost pulls all the way to 6200k. But I miss the "surge" on the stock tune. I'd say go for it if you haven't already. I'd be pissed if I'd waited for the warranty to run up but to each their own.

Bigblack Cockus thanks for the reply. I have not gotten the AP yet. I’m getting more used to the stock tune now. I’m at 6500 miles. I’m considering keeping it full stock now and getting an older wrx to mess around with and tune. I do have 100k bumper to bumper and a lifetime Powertrain warranty. Also I know what you mean about the “surge” on the stock tune. For everyday driving and not doing pulls to redline the surge is fun. Is it worth the 650 to lose the rev hang and flatten the power curve? Maybe. Also with the risk of voiding possible warranty claims makes it a very hard decision. 😬

Bigblack Cockus I’m interested in how your stage 1 tune does on the highway. I just got back from a 1500 mile road trip with all highway driving. At 75mph it’s so easy to overboost in 6th gear. Revs are at 2.75k and you can build full boost with just a little throttle. Great for passing but I worry about low speed preignition. Curious if the stage one is better cause it makes the throttle curve more linear. Any thoughts???

  • @SJS_Devin

    5 жыл бұрын

    1. What I've heard is that when you do the first reflash for a tune it ticks something in the ECU and stops a certain counter or something like that. When you reflash the stock tune itll come back but itll leave a gap of the whole time you had the tune... In example - Stock tune:15000 miles > Stage 1: 30000 miles >|Reflash to stock tune| 30500 miles. Itll read as a stock tune up to 15000 > 30500 leaving a gap inbetween showing it was tuned.. like I said thats what I've heard. Can't confirm it as a fact. 2. Any basic 91/93 octane tune will fix that.

The car will run without the AP plugged in, the tune will remain active if you unplug the AP as well. The problem is that the ECUs in the new WRXs keep track if there were any changes done to them, even if you reinstall the original factory tune. I don't think it keeps track of what was done, just that changes were made.
