2014 Mazda Mazda6 6-speed - Redline: Review

No longer the by-product of the marriage between Ford and Mazda, the all-new 2014 Mazda 6 is now strictly all Mazda. With its own unique platform, sleek "Kodo" styling, and the best fuel-efficiency in it's class. The third generation Mazda6 will undoubtedly make it to more shoppers' short list when choosing a mid-size family sedan. Let's just hope the company sees fit to up the fun factor with more power in the coming years.

I just purchased the 6 Grand Touring; replaced the stock air filter with a K&N Filter and used 89 oct. gas. These two changes caused the engine to add 150 rpm at idle; add 300 rpm to the rev range in 3rd 4th and 5th gear before shifting out. My 0-60 mph time is now 6.4 sec. who'd a thunk it

I call this model the 2-second Maserati; when you see it on the road, you initially think it's a Maserati. It is a beautiful design.

You'd rather have satellite radio and not blind spot sensors? Where are YOUR priorities? You can pop in a CD or plug your phone in, but it'll cost a hell of a lot more to get your car fixed when you don't see that car coming and you change lanes.

Shit man, it's his opinion. Satellite radio is a must-have for many people and they don't want to go to the top-of-the-line trim level. Also blind spot monitoring is for people who can't drive. Its not hard to check your blind spots, people need to stop relying on this tech to steer you back in a lane, or brake for you when a pedestrian steps out, or to parallel park for you. If you can't do those tasks on your own, you should NOT have your license.

Brandon Friesen I can drive without all the tech that people want these days, and quite well. However, the technology that this in cars these days can be useful when you may accidentally lose concentration and you drift out of your lane. Now, don't get me wrong, I like his reviews, but it irks me how nit-picky he is. Every single car he reviews, he always calls out the manufacturer for not making the glove compartment better. Honestly, I could care less whether my car's glove compartment is damped, lined with felt, of big. I am not buying this car for the glove box, I am buying it for the space and the handling. Yes, it is his opinion to have radio over safety features, but if you'd rather have the radio, then you have no choice but to get a higher trim level. If you don't want to shell out the extra cash for it, then you should find a different car with everything you want for a low price.

Nicholas P I do agree, he is super picky. Its a terrible car if the dashboard has the wrong graining. Anyways, to me, all these driving technologies are good. My grandmother can't back up and yea a backup camera and parking sensors would be good for her. But you shouldnt depend on technologies to do your job as a driver. One day, it'll all go wrong(especially on Fords these days) and there will be a BIG crash.

I agree. Ford's tech is not the best in the business. However, backup cameras can be useful, especially on large vehicles like suburbans or Land Rovers, but if you need a backup camera on a Ford Fiesta, you really shouldn't be driving.

A friend of mine just bought a used 2015 Mazda6 Grand Touring. What a nice car for the money! He wanted me to drive it, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with this car. It felt like a car costing twice as much in my opinion. That was my first impression after one 10 minute drive anyway. I think it's a great looking car. That's incredible that it gets 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway with a 6 speed automatic. Nice review as well by the way.

I currently own one of these in a stunning dark blue metallic in the Sports trim. Excellent to drive and very decent on fuel. Mines is a diesel which is pretty frugal and as for the kit list it goes on and on in the typical MAZDA way. A Beautiful car that does turn heads with its 'angry' face and crouching stance. Great to drive too.

The early 2000s Mazda 6 looked so sexy. I was in High School and I said, 'im buying this car when I get older' but the car did change and it doesn't really align with my tastes now... but it looks and feels much nicer than accord, altima and the ever reliable, boring (like a parent) camry

  • @BlackMarketHumour

First of all, we have roads with speed limits of 80 mph in some places of the US. That would be the same as having a road with a speed of 129 km/h. Even with the "standard" speed limit in the US of 70 mph, most people will drive 75mph. The police know this, and are comfortable allowing someone to do this speed. Here's the question. At those speeds, are you going to have enough power in your vehicle to maneuver out of a bad situation? Not all situations can be prevented by braking, as some times you need to step on the gas and get out of the way of an idiot. That, my dear compadre, is why we need the power. Other countries don't drive as fast, because they are very small in size compared to the US.

Your context is consistent, so the viewer gets good info even if it's not your type of car. Tested the 6. Easily "Most Improved". I was amazed.. quicker, SMOOTHER, and still corners like a biyatch. I'll think about a 6 for my 70th birthday next Year... if they fork over some boost.

Definitely one of the best looking designs I've seen in a while for the segment and of course being a Mazda it will be fun to drive and reliable. The thing is though there should have been a V6 option. Good fuel economy can be achieved with a V6 too plus they operate much smoother than any 4 cylinder I've driven.

fetchmonster7 Kinda showing your age. But four cylinder motors have been plenty reliable for years now. Granted some of the "TURBO" emphasis on turbo there, have been known to be go bad, but thats after thousands of miles, and most often due to bad fuel and improper maintenance. If it says use premium use it, as with all synthetic fluids. FORD ecoboost motors are excellent btw.

Actually having just bought a 2014 Mazda6 GT and trading in my V6 Mazda6s, the car is quite quick. What people don't realize is the lower curb weight and 30 percent increased torsional rigidity compared its predecessor. They also have a class-leading 0.26 coefficient of drag. Plus, all the national car mags have this car as their top family sedan. (Car&Driver named it one of their top cars of the year)

I know you guys are trying to keep on improving the professionalism of your reviews, but I honestly prefer the old style of filming and recording in general. Especially during the test drives where the camera in pointed right in front of the dash and steering wheel. I also prefer the point of view camera when entering inside the car, makes you feel as if you were actually in it. The audio was also much more immersive. Now it's a bit muted, it's a harder to hear the engine noise. Anyways, great reviews as usual.

Great review. I love my 2014 Mazda 6. I have the i-touring automatic and my avg MPG shows 36.2... with that said -- I do baby my engine and (unless I'm in a hurry) I keep it under 65 MPH as well as keeping it in high gear which is ideal for good fuel economy. Other drivers typically get 32 MPG avg.

How many miles do you have? My dad is looking for a midsize sedan. He likes the Passat, Fusion and 6. Good idea on babying it. Break-ins can be a nightmare(can't use cruise control, can't do high revs, can't do full throttle accelerations etc.) but they will pay off when your motor runs 100% every day. I had a friend who had a 2011 Civic Si. He thought the break in period was irrelevant and was done at the factory so he didn't have to worry despite the dealer warning him. He revved the nuts off it all the time. After 6 months, he had 11,000 miles on it and it started burning oil, knocking on idle, and took multiple seconds to crank. Now? Its in the junk yard. Poor thing couldn't cope.

beachbum0014 Well I know if you click the button without holding the brake the dash lights come on and the chime comes on that's all I know I haven't tried to do accessories. I know in our car we just click the radio on and the radio turns on but it's varies on whatever car you would get.

i have driven the whole 2014 lineup of Mazdas , i bought my 2010 Mazda 3 Sport GT with comfort Pack leather heated seats brand new and its been well over 3 years since i have had it and the smiley face don't bother me one bit the drive and handel of the car is amazing and i still love my car , the all new mazda 6 is such an awesome car all the way around and when it comes to driving it WOW it blows me away , if you go with the GT Tec pack auto you got a sport button witch gives you more zoom for your buck the guy never brought that up . Mazda makes one heck of a car i tell you .

Man, the new 6 is nice, I love the fact that you can still get a sedan with a stick in the US that's not a BMW. And the MPG on sticks, the ratings say one thing but notice what he said, getting the rated 25, and is a new test car so it's likely the engine isn't broken in, WITH a heavy foot. Looks like it'll still be the same case that just driving on a normal daily basis it'll still match or beat the auto, as seems to be the case with the two new cars I've test drove, (veloster turbo, and an FR-S) Wish I could buy one without putting myself at stupid debt to income level, college is so expensive.

why are we still seeing buttons, physical nobs and static odometer and RPM dials in cars? put 2 or 3 screens with the main one being a 15+ inch flat screen display in the dash for the info-com-control system and call it a day. knobs and dials are so last year. with a screen you can customize it how every you want, and you can upgradable the look.

Its really funny to see how does the US version differ from the UK versions - All models in the UK come with e-loop - UK doesn't have a grand tourer model We have SE , SE nav , SE-L , SE-L NAV and sport nav - UK already has a 2.2 Diesel

  • @zeals1870

I think it is safe to say now that the U.S. is not receiving the 2.2 yet because the EPA regulations are even more stringent on diesel power-plants than the E.U. and U.K. which is a shame.
