I have a HP4 and I bought one of these as a second bike, I have to say it is a very cool ride. You can have great fun on it around town without the go to jail speeds the HP4 generates. You are right it brings a beaming smile to your face that just wont go away.

BeaglePower G Yeah they do have a tube, which I was thinking would kill the deal as well but I bought it any way. I even got a puncture in the rear tyre at around 700 kilometers on the clock, Thankfully I was right around the corner from the BMW dealer otherwise roadside assist on speed dial. Was thinking of trying a rim sealing kit that will allow tubeless running on the OEM rim as the OEM Metzlers in Australia are a tubless tyre.

Cohiba Bummer, that's too bad...Tubed tires have no place on a street/touring bike in 2015...I despise spokes on wheels. And on the video , just look where that guy is riding....He totally screwed with a flat and no cell phone service...LOL)) Good luck, Ride Safe

I felt in love with this bike

That was a good, casual, down to earth kind for review, and I like that. While I haven't had the opportunity to test ride one myself yet, I did get the chance to see it in person and sit on it at the IMS, and I immediately fell in love with it. My only to real gripes with the bike are first and foremost that IMO it's about a $1, 000 more than I think is really reasonable for this bike, and second putting that pseud-Öhlins"gold colored" racing fork on it just really ruins the overall continuity and esthetic of the design of the bike.

Pipes remind me of the Triumph Hurricane XR75(sic).I like the way it's set up as a fun bike with shaft drive. Had 2 BMWS GS1000 and Dakar 800 with 32 Litre tank. In the real world shaft drive is much easier to live with. No chains/links/cogs to worry about on long trips. Ducati Monster 👹 1290R and 2016 Triumph Tripple are 2 others I'd consider.

Sometimes I miss my R1200R. Love that engine.

I think this R NineT is my FAV non adventure touring/non sport bike/non sport touring BMW of today. I think I prefer this bike’s seat design rather than the cafe racer style (though I love cafe racers too) single seat of other R NineT option packages though.

forgot to mention one most important thing: the name: nine T comes from the 90th anniversary of BMW's motorcycle manufacturing ! thus the factory tried to create a bike that includes BMW's most famous features i think they managed

I drove yesterday a demo-ninet for 600km....enough that I can say, that I totally agree with the tester's review! not the most fast bike, the handling is good but not great.....sound is great....but the most important thing, it makes you smile when you ride it, which is IMO, the only thing the matters when you choose a bike! I would get it immediately, if I wouldn't be such in love with my current one!

I have a bmw r65 /1983 with a fantastic sound twocilinder boxer engine with original exhausts. Why today's boxer engines of BMW no longer have this noble sound?

Another music video. No one has ever said how many c.c.s or cu. in. the engine is. They do a lot of yakking but no specs. And not letting us hear that engine. And is there after market parts such as exhaust, cams, handle bars ect.9Go fast stuff)?

not even remotely close , enjoyed my 2000 sprint st so much more.

Can´t see why they try to market the R nine into the retro segment. It´s more similar to a Griso, I think. Beautiful and great bikes both, but not really retro; to me the R nine is like the new duc scrambler; nice bikes, but not retro in the way a W650/800, Bonneville family, or Guzzi´s own V7s are. These R nine have a sort of steampunk look into them, not saying that is bad. But not my cup of tea.

Today is 2018. Do you want to take back what you've said back on Aug 2014? 1. "...BMW is all about technology, going fast..." 2. "...it has all the torque in the world.."

I call this a bike with high FUNFACTOR. Means price - looks - handling, etc etc.

looks definitely, not price handling or performance. I was disappointed with it.

tubes in the tires? if so that's a bit of a headache.

From now on if ever I get another BMW (of which I have had a few) I would only get an airhead or K75/100. They have become a gamble when the used to be rock solid, easy to repair and not as expensive as the oil/water heads. Way too overrated now.

I don't think I would spend more than 10 grand plus MSRP on any bike cause I don't feel that most bikes are worth more than that.You can make a really good motorcycle for $10,500 and it should last a 100,000 miles.I don't think this BMW is worth more than $10,500.Its a modern day retro kind of bike with tubes in the tires.Its like Harley Davidsons.I don't think that any air cooled bike they sell should be priced over $10500.The liquid cooled touring bikes yeah those are an exemption other than that your paying to get into a Club.

Candleman Smith BMW has some of the most cutting edge bikes on the market. They made this as a throwback because it's a fad. The majority of the lineup is nothing like this bike so no, not the same as a brand.

+mightlife Nothing wrong with that. Some people don't want the headaches that come with old bikes. With this you have a modern bike that takes it back to the old school in terms of styling. Most of the major bike manufactures have a bike similar to this.

John Jacob And they're doing exactly the same thing as BM; it's a natural reaction from a large company - to react to fashions among its target audience, but just far enough behind the curve that the difference is perceptible. They did the same thing with 'streetfighter' style bikes, but both those and café racers, brats etc, etc are inherently 'built not bought'. But yes, if you have the money, it could be considered better to buy ready made - no need to get your hands dirty making something eh!?

took one out, a blast to ride, I'm 5"8 and can flat foot it. super sport bike....no, super tourer with passenger ammenties.....? no, fun, cool, joy to look at, decent handling and braking, day rider.. YES price...? ridiculous, accessories wunderlilich, rizoma , just as ridiculous in pricing. am I getting one ...YES one of these days were going to wake up dead .

That was my 2nd choice at the time and I wish I would have gone with the duke. Much nicer handling/responsiveness/performance.

I went to the dealership today to see this bike. Mounted on it… And I can tell: it is a dream bike. The only down side is the price. In our currency, in Brazil, it costs $63.000,00. That means, considering the power of buying of the currency, the same as it would cost in american Dollars. But even if we convert the currency, it costs in Dollars, U$ 30.000,00, and that is a lot of money for a bike…

+thinkpol it's air and oil cooled only, basically air cooled. I was talking about this bike not having a liquid cooled engine which is a must nowadays. take this bike to vegas at sumeer time and you will regfet every penny spent on this dinosaur.

+thinkpol I live in Vegas :) I like the retro look, but not the practical aspect of the bike. I am an every day rider and I know what I'm talking about. for less money you can get 2016 Triumph truxton 1200 r, which beats BMW all the way. but once again, if you are a BMW fan, no matter what I say, you will keep your opinion as is.

I own this bike, I can confirm that it ain't slow. Does 0-60 in ~3.4 seconds and keeps pulling hard up over 100... And I am on the edge of the tire doing 65mph through tight 270 degree on-ramps. I don't know what more you need for the street. The 9T (like the panigale and new monster) uses the engine as a stress member, i.e the frame is bolted to the engine. Makes for a stiff bike.

The smile on my face was wiped away as soon as I got riding this bike. In my opinion it is rather boring to ride.

Too bad it's so frickn uncomfortable I mean it sux bad, but if you only ride 5 miles at a time it's your bike all looks that's it very disappointed

I was so disappointed with this bike that I sold it after just a couple of years. Yes it looks pretty, but it's so underwhelming performance wise.

actually better than many modern nakeds because of low sitting weight from the boxer.. makes it turn in very easy

I'd much rather have the vastly superior KTM Super Duke 1290R.

Yeah this BMW R nineT is more for the US. Not great, but outhandles and outperforms most of their domestic stock bikes. Europeans will prefer a KTM Super Duke 1290, a Tuono RSV4, or a BMW S1000R

Couple of things about the KTM. It's traction control and throttle limitation is crazy. It only gives you the throttle you ask for when you give it wide open full throttle. 30% throttle us actually 10% open, 50% open throttle is actually 30% and so on. Second, reliability. KTM has gone to hell since they got big. "Performance bike" magazine's Super duke test bike had "low oil pressure" and "Major Engine fault" on the clock display within 500 miles from new. A relative of mine has a 990 SMC which keeps blowing various engine seals. If you watch "The Travel channel" and the Programme "Great motorcycle rides of the world", the presenter Henry Cole went through two KTM Adventurers while on a trip around the coast of South Africa. Both blew their fuel injection and died, and this wasn't serious off road stuff.

I have also met a Kiwi lad who blew a KTM 1190 Adventure's engine up. I'd love a 1290R, but reliability issues are why I'll keep my Suzuki B-King.

My Walmart Mongoose 365x Bicycle will smoke this piece of fat hamburger easily especially with me never skipping leg day and having a six pack and only weighting at 145lb I been doing 35mph on a straight road and 55mph downhill !!

boxer engines are horrible... shin bashers. test ride before you buy or wear soccer shinguards. never buy another boxer bmw again

Well you care what I say that is why you are commenting on what I said. I sincerely don't care what you doubt and that is why I wrote that. Everything I say stands. I owned one and they are shin bashers and everyone who is thinking about buying one should test ride one before they buy. It's an uncomfortable pig of a bike. If you want a street cruiser get something comfortable like a Triumph or whatever else there is out there... If you want a trail bike get the Honda or a whatever else there is out there... Why anyone would spend the money on a BMW is beyond me.

i think thats what the designers aimed for in a modern classic!?

If I'm going spend 15 grand plus I want performance as in a ZX-14R Kawasaki.Also if you lay this puppy down on either right or left your going to ground the hgeck out of your piston head covers and than its going to be UGLY BIKE #1.
