2014-10-09 Basket Illusion Platter by Harvey Meyer (Part 2)

Harvey Meyer uses an assortment of tools and techniques on a lathe in addition to pyrography to create faux basket platters. A platter is turned in a traditional manner. Along the way, beads are applied with a special tool and the groove is burned in. After segmenting the piece by marking with an indexing wheel, pyrography is applied and the basket design is inked in with India ink. After final touchup, a coat of matte finish lacquer completes the look.

I spent a day with Jim and like you say he is great at it. I have made a couple baskets and these two videos are great.

I got a tip from Jim on eliminating flat spots by spray painting the piece and letting the beading tool remove the paint.

Hi Harvey A very detailed and informative presentation. You have inspired me to have a go and I've just ordered some pens from Faber-Castell. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Andrew

Awesome work. For coloring, what size Faber Castell Pitt pen tips should I use? Sizes come in .1mm, .3mm, .5mm, .7mm, 1.5mm, and brush.

Mr. Meyer I am just beginning to work in making some simple basket illusion pieces…for fun and for improving my turning skills. What kind/make of pens do you recommend? Thank you for teaching us. David

Another idea is to use electric wax pens that are used on Easter eggs.

Do you have a link to the graphing program you use? I have checked out a few but none seem to do what yours is doing.

Seems like it would be easier just to weave a basket if you want something to look like a basket. So my question is simply, why?

I have a lathe and know how to turn, I know nothing about basket weaving. Besides, my wife would shoot me if I took up another hobby.
