I have a 2013 SXL as well and have encountered the same problem. Like you my problem was only encountered when it was hot and humid until recently. I live in North Florida and first had the problem last year. Took it to KIA and they could not reproduce the problem (temps were in low 70s). Then had the problem again and KIA kept the car for almost 20 days with no final verdict. However, when I bought the car (3 years ago now) I had KIA install a remote start on it. The remote start works great and always has... Never any issues there. While KIA had it for 20 +/- days they did pull the brake switches and clean all the connections. This past weekend while traveling on I-95 in SC I encountered a pot hole, must have knocked something loose or finally caused something to happen. The car will not start at all now using the push button starter. The remote start works great still. My car is experiencing the same problem you have shown in the video (used to be intermittently) now it is all the time when trying to start it using the push button starter.. I'll let everyone know when I find something out..

It's probably not the brake pedal switch like many think, but the gear shifter position sensor. I have a 2012 EX, and had the same fault. Turn the car off, shift from park to drive then back to park, try it again. I also park my car with the footbrake on. It's one of those quirky things, but it's worked for me everytime, and saved me so many headaches and many more dollars in dealer fees.

This issue may be due to the brake pedal sensor, or the brake switch. This is the most common part that needs to be replaced in Kia Optima's. If the vehicle is not working after installing new lights or an amp, then the problem may be the interior light fuse, ECU fuse, 30/60 AMP Power Fuse (under hood), Main Fuse 150 AMP (located on positive battery terminal). It may also be the stop lamp switch. I can only speak for my experiences on how I have been able to get my car operating, and this solution may not work for you, but if you cannot get your car to start then its worth a shot: 1) Hit the Start button one time, without pressing the break (do not hold the start button down, just tap it into accessory mode). A light should pop up on the start button. Now, hold down the start button for about 20-30 seconds. The car may start. 2) If your car says that it cannot sense your car keys, place the car fob (whatever that means....the whole car remote) into the fob slot inside the glove box, to the far left. Push the fob until you hear a click sound. Attempt to start the car normally or repeat step one. 3) If you have recently installed new lights or audio, remove whatever connections you have installed to the fuse box, etc. Replace the the old fuses. Hit the unlock button. Ask yourself, do I hear a sound like the car is ringing? If you hear a sound let the car charge up, until you no longer hear the sound anymore. Once the sound is gone, start the car normally or repeat step 1. *In particular my car makes a clicking sound in the fuse box under the hood. I recently have installed Type-S LED lights into my cars interior dash and under my front seats. I first began experiencing problems when my sunroof stopped operating properly. Im still working on my car, today.

Everyone says they are junk. Best car i,ve ever owned. no probs what so ever. KIA stands behind their car 150%at least where i am anyway. Did have to have engine replaced because of recall but they stood behind it 100%. Great Car!!Wanna buy the stinger.

I have a 2012 SX (wanted an SXL but didn't care to wait, I don't have a lot of patien....LOOK A SQUIRREL!). As many others have said, I did have the stutter start issue, which turned out to be the battery. The factory one registered 12V but wouldn't hold a charge, nor could it crank the car. The other issue I encountered previous to the battery, was the car starting, but getting stuck in limp home mode (do not pass 1st gear, do not exceed 10MPH). I had to pop the tab and depress the switch in front of the gear shift to get it into gear to limp it to the stealership. I had it in there two times for a no start (on their dime for a tow). They found nothing. I drove home. Finally they figured out it was the brake sensor switch, and I've never encountered the issue again. In the original documentation of the fix, they had mentioned that it was a bss on the CAN line. Oh, and I did have a battery die in the keyfob. All that caused was an error stating the key wasn't in the car. In general, it's probably an electrical issue (yes, I know, I'm Captain Obvious). With the newer stuff, everything reports and cross checks on the CAN line (Car Area Network), this means everything from grille to tail lights. All the sensors have to play ball with each other, and if one of them decides they aren't showing up to work at that moment, nothing will go. Other times, you can get low level function if one of the sensors takes a mental health day, but you're better off walking at that point. As far as I know, the only item that was different on the SXL was the removal of a physical parking brake pedal for an electronic one. There may have been some minor tweaks on other things we don't see, so I can't speak to those. Possibly an upgraded brake system? The only reason I touch on that is because you mentioned the pedal pressure being different on a no start condition. Makes me wonder if the high temps and humidity cause some sort of issue with the brake system. Causing it to not be in the correct state and if there's a pressure check, the car goes "nope, so sorry, it's out of spec, we're going to sit here." Just throwing about some ideas. Sorry for your misfortune.

I know this post is years old. But maybe this will help someone. Mine does the same thing. 2013 SXL. Car comes on but won’t start. I panicked the first time it happened to me, like a year after I got it. Called the service department at the dealership immediately!!! And this is what I was told. Option one: With the car on....Press the brake pedal down(even tho it doesn’t press all the way but don’t pump the brake pedal) and put the car in neutral and press the push start button. It should start then. Option 2: (if gear shift doesn’t move) Take key out of remote. The spot right behind the gear shift that says “release” or whatever it is. It’s covered and u have to take the cover off. Once the cover is off, put key in slot and press down. Make sure it’s inserted the right way or you won’t be able to push down. Once you push key down, press brake pedal, put car in neutral, and press push start button. No one I’ve spoken to knows the exact problem, but these are the only solutions I was given. It doesn’t happen often, but at least I know how to make my car start.

kcyoung04 thanks for the comment! This car is long gone and sold! Unfortunate, but this continued to happen to me over and Over! I have been told the same thing by the service department and none of it worked for me. My question always to them was, “how do you know to suggest this, but at the same time tell me you’ve never heard of it before?” Then I would have another service guy ask me if it happened during certain temperatures? Again, how do they know to ask these questions and make suggestions and claim they’ve never heard of this?!! I was finally told, after at least 10 times to the service department for this problem, that my only option was to start replacing every single comment of the engine until it stopped..... that’s insane! I recommend you get a lemon law attorney now and get tour money back on this car. It’s a well known problem and if I had thought about it back when I had this car I would have done this. Such a bummer because I loved this car.

Just from the video I have a couple suggestions. It could be the inhibitor switch also known as the transmission range switch which Kia does have a TSB for not sure if it is for the Optima but I do know the Sorrento's have this issue it could also be the shifter. There is a micro switch that detects when the shifter lever is placed in park but if the micro switch is faulty and does not detect the shifter and parked the vehicle will not start. Could also be a brake switch issue which is a common part known to fail on a lot of vehicles So those are my three suggestions based on this video. Good luck from a Kia Tech.

Jesse Alvarado I have a 2012 Kia Sorento that won't start. I have tried the override with the key fob placed in the slot in the center console, as well as holding the button in, with no luck. The car tries to start, but then shuts off after about 5 seconds. Any ideas? I see there was a recall on the brake switch, but only up to the 2011 models. Mine is a 2012.??? I am beyond frustrated!

I have the 2013 SXL Optima and have not experienced any issues. However, I do not understand why the dealer cannot find the problem. I think it's just laziness at their end. They can check the fuses, reinstall a new starter, check the spark plugs and etc... It is a lot of work, but they need to find it through trial and error. Hope you find a solution!!!

Any update to this? My Kia is doing the exact same thing and no mechanic/dealership has any clue what the issue is...

My grandfather's Nissan Altima was doing something similar and it ended up being a sensor loose that attaches to the bottom of the brake pedal. If you reach under the brake pedal and notice a pigtail connector, make sure it's secured properly. Once I secured his, the car started right up and has worked flawlessly since. He had been stranded numerous times before I figured it out. Different vehicle, I know. Wouldn't it be nice if it was something that simple though? Figured I'd mention it just in case it was. I have just had the same issue ... after checking with the mechanic he told me it is the ECM (the computer running the engine error code P0605) and after replacing it with another computer it worked

You need to eliminate the gear shift issue first by putting it on NEUTRAL and push the Start button with the foot on the brake. If it still don't start then it may be Brake sensor and or battery; you need to isolate the issue.

I had the same issue. My car would not start in the morning. If i rolled the car down my driveway and sometimes it would start. I replaced the start relay.. No dice. Ended up being the starter. This issue seems to be an ECU issue.

im having a problem with my 2016 Kia Optima FE, but I’m being told it’s coming from my fuse box since there is also a whining noise. There’s no signs of warning lights. Usually I would just tap the fuse box and my car would just crank. Now it’s not turning over, it’s alerting me about tpms & also a “turn on fuse box” alert popped up on the screen. Also, my key will not let me unlock or lock my car doors (the car is not a push to start) . Im out of ideas and really depending on this car right now. Can someone help ?

having the same problem with my 2013 kia soul ... changed a bunch of fuses the neutral safety switch .. but I can start my car by jumping the starter relay .. maybe its the main relay and I got the multifuse on the way ..

Kia óptimas are very well know for issues. The good thing about them is Kia warranties many of them. On the recalls. So all gravy. Just dnt get the hybrid version. 😜😅

What ended up being the problem...my car is doing that.....they tried to tell me it was my aftermarket remote start....they put a new one in and still having issues

I honestly hope that this isn't a problem on the 2018 models because I just bought an 18 Optima SX

Since yesterday with a sorento 2015

The reason this is happening really is because the car is not seeing the parking engaged so when u put it in ( N ) it allows you to turn it on because it enables that issue so next time it happens shift to ( N ) then back to parking or every time you turn you’re car off make u shift the lever hard into the parking position.

I had EXACTLY the same issue... but let me ask you this- I live in central FL... It doesn't get cold here very often, but when it does, that is when I have this issue. Trust me its not a battery thing... when I say "cold" I'm talking C. Florida cold... like 45* for the low... occasionally... but it is EXACTLY the same as what you are showing in the video. What was the air temp when you recorded this?

My Optima is doing this as well. Like yours, it only happens when it’s about 40-45 degrees. Once it’s warmed up and been drove it’ll start everytime no matter the temp. Did you ever find the resolution to problem, and if so, what was it?

Mine would do it because it didn’t “think” that it was all the way in Park..smh Pissed me off SO bad. I would have to shift it back and forth then it would start up just fine

Has anyone checked if the engine is locked. Put a large breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt and try to turn the engine.

Hey any update my kia optima have the same issue

I live in Ohio, 65 degree weather today and I have the 2013 Kia Optima SXL in white also. This exact thing happened to me today. It has been happening off and on but today it has not started at all. I usually have to wait about 10 to 15 mins then it starts. After a hour today it never started. My auxilaries work but no car starting. Happens at the wrong time every time. Frustrating. I only had the car 6 mos. Ugh!

+Juan Rodriguez I have not had any dealership figure this out yet. I was told that all that is left for me to do is to contact Kia Customer service directly (through their website) and start a case with them. So strange! But, I can tell you that my issue seems to happen when the weather is really hot or humid (95+ temps)

Let me know if my fix works for you. I haven't had any other issues. The dealer could not duplicate my problem and therefore couldn't find a solution. I haven't been back yet to tell them my solution.

Same problem. I have been to 3 dealers and not one has a clue. Sometimes it starts right up, sometimes not. When it doesn't, I shift from park to neutral and back to park and so far it has started. Haven't used the key in the glove box yet. Saving that for last resort.

+Simeen Khan Thank you for asking. The simple answer is "NO", they have not been able to diagnose it properly or fix it. There have been proposals to do somethings, but I did not want to spend $200-300 on anything that might not be the problem. I have had the battery replaced, as that was what I was told was the issue more than a year ago now. What they want me to do is "bring the car back into us when this happens again" - which is funny because I would have to tow it to them in that case. This video helped, as many engineers at Kia have taken a look at it. I wish there was a way we could all come together on this issue. Other than this occasional problem (seems to happen at worst times) I love this car.

Hi! I never was able to resolve this issue with my car. Kia couldn't;t seem to find out what it was either, so I ended up selling the car. But I think it's a god start to go with the information on the shaft position sensor. In my opinion, this is all happening based on some sort of sensor issue. I had several sensors replaced in my car at it still continued to happen. Sorry to hear of your problems, and I wish you luck in getting it resolved.

I'm having the same issue with my 2011 optima ex! Help! I recently got the new motor put in due to the recall and got a brand new battery. This has never happened before the engine replacement!

I have a Kia Soul 2013 and I am experiencing the same issue .. intermitting starting . The dealer told me that they could not re- create the issue and sent me on my way ..

Hi Kelly, thanks for the comment. What I learned from another viewer of my other video of this, is that she had her Kia Optima towed into the dealership when it wouldn't start, and they found that the issue was to replace the "transmission range sensor" which was failing to recognize that the car was in park and wouldn't start. The dealers have always sent me on my way because they are unable to recreate the problem. My car still has time to time very delayed starting - totally weird. But the weather here has been cooperating this summer with no real severe heat and humidity.... usually the trigger for me, for whatever reason. Try that solution and let me know if it does you any good.

My bf pulled over and cut the car of and it wouldn't restart. we tried EVERYTHING. key fob override, holding ignition in etc etc. everything Google and KZread suggested. battery disconnect to reset.... u name it. I had it towed to the house and trying to research before burning holes in my pockets financially if no one knows what's wrong with it... I have tried to read through all of the comments but anything I may have overlooked?

My car was fixed it was solenoid sensor .. I wrote a letter to Kia Corp in CA . The dealer did a good well credit no charge for the repair . Thank god

Daryl Martin that is a whole different issue. That means that the vehicle was trying to start but either does not have enough power to start, or the starter itself is not engaging. Make sure you have a fully charged battery and any Kia dealership should have a system test to test your battery starter and alternator for free but as any dealership you probably have to make an appointment

That's what wrong with my 2013 SX. the brake pedal is stiff as a brick. Kia replaced​the trans range sensor under warranty last year. well a year later it's slowly coming back. idk man 😟

I hear ya! Ive been through tall! I get a lot of comments on this thread, like I'm not pushing the start button long enough. Really? Like I haven't done it all, including the dumb key override in the glovebox. There is definitely a recall issue here for Kia, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why they don't do something about it! There is so many videos about this issue. With me, it seems to only happen when the temperatures got up in the 95 + range. I never had this happen when its cold. Kia was asking me if it happened during specific temperature ranges? Now, if they knew to ask such a question, then they must have some idea what's going on, right?

I have been having the exact same issue with my 2012 KIA Sorento for a few months now. Some days it won't start at all, even when I try all the overrides that this forum suggests. Other days, it starts up on the first try, no problem. The problem is that the issue needs to be fixed because I need a reliable vehicle that will start on the first try every damn time! Have you had any luck in finding a resolution to this problem? Another thing I have noticed recently is that sometimes when I'm driving, then have to brake to slow down or stop, my car loses power and almost stalls. Any advice would be appreciated....

There is a recall on the brake switch, but only up to 2011 models. Mine is a 2012.

I had the same problem, but it was an easy fix. It had to do with the battery design itself, the battery of a Kia Optima SXL has tops on it. These tops (specifically the right top) has blocking the positive battery cap from staying onto the battery. Once I found that out, I cut the edge of the top blocking the battery cap and retightened the bolt around the cap. I’ve had no problems since

Update... it's an electrical issue with no definitive solution. It can be overridden though. Open glove box put key in slot. Move the gear into neutral and start it

MrHwill22 same issues with my Kia Optima sxl and I tried that and it still didn't start up

I've had this problem intermittently with my 2013 Optima. I just took it to the dealer and they said it was probably the Inhibitor Switch. They're supposed to check and fix it next week under warranty (just barely). A couple things...I've noticed that the problem goes away after letting it sit for an hour. The first time, I had it towed and, of course, it started right away after it was towed to my mechanic. Also, the dealer just told me the steps to start it when the problem re-occurs. Hit the start button twice (so the green light is on), put your foot on the brake and shift to neutral, now push the button again with your foot on the brake and it should start. It's too bad because I've liked the car other than this problem and I haven't had any issues in almost 5 years.

Jose Cisneros I’m pretty sure it was the inhibitor switch as they first said.

Try holding down the button for 10 seconds straight and see if it starts to override the issue.

Short of starting to replace all kinds of different electrical items as a process of elimination, I've gotten no relief on this. Mine seems to be connected to really hot temperatures (95+), and that's when I start to experience the problems

Goldmercy A you are not bothering me at all! I wish that I had an answer for you, and I had 3 different Kia dealerships look at this issue, as well as corporate engineers with no idea what causes it or a permanent fix. I ended up selling the car after dealing with this for 3 years. Sorry

pzaayer ....I have solved this problem for all Kia owners.......1.Drive car to any large dumpster. 2. Rent a crane an lower car into said dumpster. 3. Call cab company. 4. Google nearest Toyota dealership. 5. Slap yourself several times for not doing good research in the first place. 7. Promise to subscribe to Consumer Reports.

Xdrii did you ever get it resolved? Having the same issue in mine. Same model. Mine actually attempts to start sometimes, and sometimes only the lights come on

Edwin Perez so Kia told us here in Northglenn Colorado that it's a battery situation? I don't think so, from what I think it is either it's an actual Start Switch malfunction OR the switch that determines if the car is in park? Reason I say that is if I get that no start situation is and put it in neutral and then rock the car a little then back in park and it clicks (lock sound on the transmission) and try to start it then the car starts? So I believe the car thinks it's in "gear" so it throws all those codes and then when I rock it in neutral and back in park and it clicks it starts every time. So I'm not paying for a battery till I'm sure it's not a parking lock switch or start button switch. Could be both? :(

Kevin Rivera im going to have to try that .. my vehicle just started doing that today ... I need to get it to start somehow or I’m gonna have to get a tow truck

Any update on this issue? I just encountered this problem last night.

Nik, I was there was! I have had the car looked at by 3 different dealerships without a cause to what this is or causes it. Aside from just pulling apart replacing a bunch of parts to see which one makes a difference, they have no ideas. I'm ready for my to start acting up now that it is summer time. I noticed that it happens to me in really hot or humid conditions.

+pzaayer So I had my battery checked. They said it couldn't hold a full charge but it had enough juice to energize every thing else. It didn't have enough amperage to kick over the starter. I bought a new battery and my it turned on. Hope this helps.

+Nik Sanchez I've been down that exact same path. Replaced battery with the same reasoning. It kept happening. But hopefully it has better results for you. As in my video, everything in the car runs fine electrically - for the most part, and my battery is fine. Just had to try after the temperatures cooled off

Your brake light switch needs replacement. That's it.. ! ! !

breake light????

I have a 2013 optima sx 85k miles. Car engine wont fire up just cranks. All lights work and windows and radio. Took battery to autozone they said battery is good. Tired turning the car in in neutral and car started place back into Park then 2 minutes later car turned off. Bad alternator maybe? Fuel pump?? Anyone have any suggestions? Check out my latest video you'll see what my is doing. Taking to kia dealer for service. Will update a comment on that video. May post another video if problem is fixed.

UPDATE. My gar just needed gas!! AAA looked at my battery, starter, and alternator and all were good. He put gas in and car fired up : ) NOTE*** dont let your optima get to low gas my gas light had just turned on maybe had 30 miles til empty but apparently it was inaccurate! Make sure you always fill up tank lol

+Daniel Lozano Find myself asking that same question. Love the car.... but how can this be an issue by so many people, and not have any solutions?? Not good

Don't be deceived by kia's 10 year 100,000 warranty. these vehicles are made very cheaply! kia's have had ongoing engine failures for some time now. these vehicles are simply "Throw away car's."

.....cars are junk.....cheap Korean cars.......I'll keep my 97 accord.......210,000 miles.
