2013-2018 Toyota Avalon Buying Guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician goes over common problems and things you need to know when buying or owning a 2013-2018 Toyota Avalon and Avalon Hybrid.
In this video I will be going over the normal categories of the car talking about common issues I see working on these cars since they were new.
In the engine category we have some common oil leaks from the 2GR-FE engine and some oil burning issues in the Avalon hybrid 2AR-FXE.
In the transmission category I'll go over some transmission fluid burning and solenoid problems. Also some Avalon shifting issues which can be fixed by reseting the transmission memory.
In the chassis I'll cover leaking struts and the squeaking noise from the front caused by sway bar bushings. You can find the steering and suspension series here • Toyota Steering and Su...
In the body category I'll cover the infamous Toyota sun roof clunk. The seat back falling off. Rear sun shade sticking or jamming. And last some fuel door problems.
In the Electrical category I'll cover 2013 Avalon blind spot problems. Pre collision system and radio problems.
In the hybrid section we'll talk about oil burning issues and the hybrid fan filter.

My mom bought a 2016 Avalon Hybrid Limited, so comfortable. All the safety tech, low miles, heated/cooled seats, sunroof, way nicer than the 2018 Prius she was going to get. I'm glad I told my mom to look at the used cars before she bought a new car. The Avalon was only a few thousand more, but such a better car.

Agree! I bought a used 2014 Avalon Hybrid, and the somewhat lower MPG compared to the Prius is actually excellent for a car that size (30-32 MPG in mixed urban driving, 42-44 MPG on the Interstate). The comfort and luxury in the Avalon is light years better than the Prius, which comes in handy on long trips. Even the 2013-15 Avalons with the stiffer suspension than the 2016 and newer models ride better than a Prius.

I had my heart set on the new Prius, I realized the price point was too high so I started looking at Camry's and for the first time to test drive the Avalon. Bar none I believe I'm making the right decision.

One thing I HIGHLY RECOMMEND on 2013-2018 Avalons: Add a strut bar to the engine compartment! This tightens up the handling of this car as it hugs the road with a strut bar.

I bought a 2016 Avalon XLE from a medical courier with 265k. He highway miled the hell out of this car. Checked his maintenance records and he kept up with the record. I’ve had it for 5k miles. Got my first oil change and tire rotation a few days ago. Shifts smoothly and it’s a fast car for its size.

2013 limited here. The only issue I've had in 5 years has been with the rear sunshade. It would always get stuck either up or down and keep making the broken motor noise. Just disconnect the power to the motor. The only annoying thing lol. It really is the best hidden gem on the road. Interior and tech is much better than any lexus I've seen so far.

I assumed it somehow got bumped out of alignment in the bumper which I heard could cost up to $2,000 to realign, but now I know this is a common problem and not an alignment issue. I have a 2013 Avalon XLE Hybrid (Blizzard Pearl) I bought as a certified used (3 year lease return) car. Traded in an 05 Prius with 220k which was falling apart at the end. Biggest fix on the Prius was the HID headlight leveling sensor failed, and I got the last replacement in the US, as it was the same week as the Fukushima disaster, Torrance couldn't get anymore. That repair required the whole front clip to be removed to replace a chip. Unreal. This Avalon though is by far the best car I've ever owned. Was looking at a new Prius at the time but test drove this Avalon, since they were comparable in price, and the Avalon felt so much better to drive; so much ROOM! The sales people were using it as their snack trip runner because it was the nicest used in the lot. I just had the blind spot monitor stop working, good to know there was a TSB for the issue. Thanks for the vid, great stuff! :-)

I looked on CarGurus and did a nationwide search on 2015 models with less than 60,000 miles, and based on their analysis of asking prices they seem to value an Avalon with that kind of mileage around $20,000. I bought a Toyota Certified used 2014 Avalon Hybrid Limited. I absolutely love it! I have considered trading it in for an SUV like the Highlander or Highlander Hybrid because my needs have changed since I bought it in 2017. The thing is, after I test drive an SUV (even Toyota) and get back in my Avalon, I think to my self, "You fool! How can you even think about giving it up!" (I may well just rent an SUV the three or four times a year I really need it, or maybe even get a "beater" SUV for those occasions.) Regarding mileage, my mixed city/highway driving is around 32 MPG, quite acceptable for such a large car. In pure Interstate driving, I get 42-44 MPG, depending on how often I use Sport Mode.

Bought a 2014 Limited Avalon in 2020 with 86k and absolutely love it. The car is quiet, fast, and almost furious. Between Eco, and Normal, the Sport Mode does make a difference. One of the cool features besides the lumbar is the thigh support on that trim. One thing I wish was increased was the fuel tank capacity which gives your ~280 miles per trip. Second, an add-on would be to increase the size of side mirrors. Since this Toyota model is being discontinued and if you like it, I suggest going with the Lexus ES 350 (my neighbor’s choice with an additional $5k on top of it).

Great info and I agree, excellent car. Leased a 2013 XLE Touring in Nov of that year thinking that I was done working overseas after 6 years. Wanted low payments as no job. Went back overseas May of 2014, early return wasn't worth it even with less than 4,000 miles on it. Bought the car at the end of the lease with around 10k miles. 6 years overseas again, car now has 17,781 on the clock. Was thinking about selling for a new Highlander, trade in not worth getting rid of. Radio is my only issue which is why I'm on KZread looking for info. Maybe I'll take it in for radio updates and be done with the problem. Not sure if newer NAV units from Pioneer, Alpine etc are available or worth the bucks. Apple Car Play would be nice. Anyway, thanks so much for the video!

My father sold my son his 2015 Avalon Limited. Only 40k miles, in immaculate condition. Very nice car and so far only real issue has been the infotainment system, fixed with an update and deleting grandma's iPhone (seems to be the root cause). I'd really advise against hybrid-my wife had to trade in her 2008 Highlander when the ABS module failed-$2.5k part and no indie dealer wanted to touch the job as it ties into the high voltage system of the hybrid. The dealership was asking more than the part cost in labor. Car was already at 250k miles with a ticking hybrid main battery, but sad to trade it in as it was in amazing shape. The non-hybrid likely would have lasted at least 500k!

First, thank you for educating me about Toyota's. I feel so confident with engaging with people who love Toyota's like me. I have a 2006 Land Cruiser too closeto 300k miles and I'm just now having issue that are minor and someone is always asking if I want to sell it lol. Today I just signed a contract for a 2015 Avalon XLE priced at $17,998 with 117k miles. The external and internal is immaculate as if no one rode in the car too much. It was a rental in the beginning and used 20k miles and the rest was only one owner. No accident damage and a boatload of positive service records made by the owner who had the car the majority of the vehicle. I felt so comfortable and relaxed in the car. Question, which gas do you use? Can anyone share their thoughts about the 2015 pros/cons? When I saw the sales person park the car I hear breaks squeaking, I need to report that to him tomorrow.

BTW, you also discussed a pet peeve of mine that is a general car issue and not specific to the Avalon or even Toyota. If it was up to me, I would not buy a car with a moonroof. It's one more thing that can break down, potentially expensive to repair, and prone to leaking from the gasket/seal around the glass. Unfortunately, it's not an option because it's generally part of a package; if you want the heated/cooled seats or other goodies, you have to take the moonroof (that goes with a lot of manufacturers, not just Toyota).

Hi! Not worried on the damage at 15k on the Avalon as it’s old damage. Now honestly this is a tough one because both those years are ones that I highly recommend. I would definitely go with the Avalon or Camry over the ES in this case as the ES is older. How’s the maintenance history on these?

Except there is a Avalon hybrid with 56 miles on it coming soon to a local carmax - is that too many miles for a used hybrid? The Avalon I'm favoring because it's loaded with all the safety features and more goodies has the 59k miles - is that too much?

If it helps, I had a 2007 Camry that I took to the Toyota dealer for regular oil changes, and one day while waiting around at the dealership, I spotted an Avalon just outside the showroom and checked it out. It was instant love, and I said to myself "Someday, I'm going to own one of these!" As a birthday present in 2017, I bought a Toyota Certified used 2014 Avalon Limited Hybrid and haven't regretted it since. It's worth expanding your search scope to find one, even to Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, and Birmingham.

Only thing is that rear window visor this is stuck wont go down, some kind of leak under the car straight down from brake fluid resorvior? idk what is the leak is for. Driver window struggles to go up. Was on bluetooth hooked up with my iPhone and song stopped playing. Rides and drives really good. Came from a 2015 sentra with 68k miles. WAYYY better than that sentra shifts smooth engine is quiet. Turns well, bumps on the road no rattles. Ive got the burgundy color, tan leather seats. Plenty of room in the back.

Hi! After initially watching this video, I bought a 2013 Avalon Ltd. Hybrid. I'm very pleased with the car and thank you for your video. I'm getting ready to take my first trip, and want to inspect the hybrid battery cooling system filter. (Peering through the air intake, it looks pretty dirty in that area.) I've removed the seat and the bolts at the bottom of the driver's side seat back next to the air intake for the cooling system. There's a little flip up panel behind the seat back (1 0f 3 total) exposing a release for the anchor holding the top of the seat back. It's appears that I should just pull up on the release, but it's extremely tight and I don't want to damage anything. How do I proceed to access the filter? Any suggestions that you can give me would be greatly appreciated!
