*how is handling in backroad driving? I know it’s a heavy car but is it kind a good or a good around the corners?*

Pretty fun on back roads actually with the ABC suspension. It doesn’t have the grip of purpose built sports cars, but the body is pretty well controlled, steering feel on the AMG models is pretty nice, and they’re pretty neutral at the limit, allowing a little oversteer if you push it. I traded this CL63 when I bought my 718 Spyder, but I missed having a CL so I bought an ABC-equipped CL550 this year. I’ve had lots of fun with my CL550, even autocrossed it - it was obviously too big and heavy a car to be fast in autocross, but it was still a lot of fun, and I thought the car did well for what it is.

Are you looking at the 2007-2010 CL63 or the 2011-2014 CL63? The latter are quite a bit more expensive usually. The older C215 CL class was smaller/lighter, and the supercharged M113K engine was fantastic in performance and reliability. Main issue with the C215 is the first generation ABC suspension which was prone to various failures. The C216 improved the ABC reliability, though the M256 engine of the 2007-2010 cars has various known issues. The 2011-2014 CL63s with the M257 engine are the most reliable, highest performing, and most expensive of the bunch.

Both are great. I plan to make a video of my 2007 CL550 in the spring, contrasting it with my 2012 CL63. Are you planning on a CL550 or a CL63?

@@bobjensen4051 Whichever car you buy, I’d strongly encourage buying one that has been enthusiast owned and meticulously maintained by someone who can afford to maintain it. Parts for these cars are very expensive, and a lot of things can go wrong just due to their complexity. Also make sure the sunroof works properly (moves and doesn’t make any odd noises). The damaged (by previous owner) sunroof on my 2007 CL550 has been an expensive nightmare that I didn’t properly inspect when buying the car. At dealer pricing you can easily end up spending $6000 fixing a sunroof that seemed to work aside from a rattle over bumps and some odd noises while operating it.

2007-2010 are naturally aspirated, 2011-2014 are turbocharged. CL63s have more power than CL550s. M156 engines in the 2007-2010 CL63s have nice sound and performance, but some known weaknesses (like head bolt breakage). M157 and M278 engines can have some timing chain stretch related issues as they get higher in mileage, may need timing chain replacement if you hear chain rattle. The MCT transmission in the 2011-2014 CL63 shifts a bit quicker than the torque converter based transmissions, but it’s not the most graceful at low speed. I like the torque converter based transmissions better actually since they make it easier to modulate wheel torque from a standstill.

I’m a big fan of the ABC suspension, as it makes the car feel much more controlled in handling. Air suspension cars feel rather boaty in comparison.

The CL63 was awesome though unfortunately I had to sell (trade) it in order to pay for the new 718 Spyder I recently bought. It’s also winter here (with snow and salt on the ground) now, so I probably won’t have new car content till the road salt clears in spring next year. I do have a W126 300SE and W140 S500 that I want to make videos about. I particularly love my W140. I want to buy another (somewhat cheaper) CL though - either a late C215 CL55, late C215 CL600, C216 CL600, or late (twin turbo) C216 CL550 4Matic. The late CL550 is probably best for me, as it has all wheel drive for better traction, and the M278 is a responsive and efficient-ish motor while still being torquey. The M275 (turbo V12) powered cars I’ve driven have felt a bit slow reacting - turbo lag, slow shifting, continuing to accelerate for a moment after letting go of the accelerator. I’ve always wanted a V12, but the M275 (paired with 5GTronic transmission) didn’t feel like a very sporty or responsive setup when I drove a C215 and W220 with that drivetrain.

@@sultanqasim such a shame it's gone but at least the 718 is another amazing car nonetheless. I've been hunting for a 6.2 CL63 for almost 9 months now and probably will end up importing one from Japan (low miles / comparable price with local cars on the Euro market). I test drove the 6.2 and while the sound is absolutely unmatched by anything before or after it from AMG (my opinion), I'm a bit worried it's the wrong match for such a heavy car. Tomorrow I'll test drive a 5.5 biturbo and while I don't really appreciate the facelift's styling over the original, I imagine the extra torque and thrust from the turbos will make it feel a bit lighter on its feet. I briefly test drove a 600 C216 and almost bought one of the spot, that heavy and smooth-yet-sluggish V12 seemed to suit the car far better than a V8... especially that the one I drove had the AMG bumpers/sills/rims fitted to it, and the standard 500s/600s are a bit too reserved styling-wise for my taste. Anyway, good luck with your content and thanks for your insight!

@@Veryperceptivecat The turbo M157 powered CL63 is considerably more expensive used than the more common naturally M156 powered ones, though the torque of the M157 is amazing. The M157 is perhaps a more reliable motor too, though the multi-clutch transmission isn’t as smooth as the older torque converter based one in the M156 CL63. With my M157 powered CL63 (with the P30 package), I’d get a lot of wheel spin in first and second gears, while third gear would grip and have more thrust than most cars in first gear. Maybe with better summer tires it could grip in second gear. Third gear acceleration from 50-150 km/h in the CL63 felt nearly the same as my 718 Spyder going through gears 1-3 and shifting at 8K RPM.

@@sultanqasim Interesting... I've just driven the biturbo, literally 20 minutes ago. I'm shocked how different it feels to the 6.2, and I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. It felt a lot like the 3.0 BiTDI unit I had in my old A7 - it felt much sleepier and lazier than I expected. The 6.2 I've driven felt much more lively right from the bottom of the rev range, the 5.5 felt almost like a 500. When put in S mode it reacted really quickly, but for some reason the whole experience felt a bit 'flat' throughout the gears.

@@Veryperceptivecat The M157 is slower reacting for sure, though a big part of it is the transmission. In comfort mode, it starts off in second gear, which feels lazy, particularly because it has to engage the clutch gradually to not stall. In sport mode, it starts in first which feels much livelier, though you still need to get used to the clutch engagement logic of the MCT. It gradually engages the clutch when you start moving from a standstill, and that can make it feel “sleepier” than the conventional auto in the M156 based version that starts using the torque converter. However, the benefit of the MCT transmission is in efficiency and reducing power loss in the torque converter. The transmission also learns your driving habits and you get used to the clutch engagement, so it gets a bit better with time. The M157 sets itself apart when you dig into the throttle from a roll. Above 2500 RPM, there isn’t much turbo lag, and it shoves you back in your seat much more forcefully than the M156 based version.
