Often been called the spiritual successor to the famed BMW 2002. The current 1-series represents BMW dynamics in the smallest and most pure form. Although the platform is on the way to being replaced, those of you looking for the most nimble and lightest BMW, would be wise to check one out.

I just bought a 2011 128i after having an auto e36 m3, and wow I really love this car! All the power and fun of the m3 but more comfortable and even better transmission. It doesn't have the sport package but honestly it's a fantastic car

yankee2 yankee I was doing some research and you guys only have the 128i and the 130i selling in the states, 128 does not exists here in Europe we have 114, 116, 118, 120, 123, 125,130,135 and 140 we use mostly hatchback for the 1 series, the problem is that here in Portugal you are forced to buy them diesel oh yeah diesel is very common in Europe 😂😂😂 but I was surprised with the price of the 128i in the states I have a 123d because we in Portugal you are forced to buy them diesel because gasoline is so expensive but I would prefer x100 times a 123i or a 125i
as many have said; this is a brand new bmw e30

I bought a 2012 128i convertible 6 speed manual with corral seats two years ago and love it. Turns heads when the top is down
I think this car looks fantastic inside and out and really fun to drive
While I was in Italy last summer I saw a 1 Series hatchback and loved it. It's a real shame they don't offer that car here in the US because I would consider one.

Excellent commentary!!!! I am actually looking into buying a 2013 BMW 128i in the next few days (whenever the winter storm passes). Trading in my 2012 Honda Civic Coupe for it.
Great review dude, well edited and descriptive, well done!
You should have your own TV show. Excellent review.
This really is a good review.. not perfect.. but better than most that I see on here.. Way better than that dude who just walks around the car and revs them to death.

nice I have a 2008 128i... I bought it a year ago, not a scratch on it and for less than ANY of the used 2010 GTI's or 2010 CivicSi's with same mileage. It's a solid car, good power, I modified the airbox which made the throttle response much better. I never considered the 135i, they are great cars but even a used one cost about 5k more and the turbos can be expensive to maintain. If I spent any more money I would have got the G37 which was about $3k more or and older 2002 Porsche 911 but I was worried about maintenance on that as well.

No major mechanical issues so far, I've owned it for 35k miles, it has 85k total. It did have one bad engine coil when I replaced spark plugs. Avg mpg is 24 but it will get over 30mpg on highway w cruise set to 65mph

Just bought my 128i w the premium package. Mean ride. Love it!
in love with this car
All these cars you listed compete with the BMW 3-series coupe... soon to be the upcoming 4-series. The 1-series is much smaller and lighter than all those vehicles.
Although they are all small, low slung, RWD sport coupes; those vehicles are in a different price category and do not truly compete with the 1-series.
Bought one today. Nice affirmation of my take on the car.
i have an E88 in LeMans Blue and its a FUN little car..enjoy driving it more than my previous E90 and E92….great review btw!!!
i just fell in love and got butterflies in my stomach :) no over teched out interior, no cheapness, and fun to drive. perfect

Been looking for a 128i in a 6spd, and it's extremely hard.
Thanks for the review. I have an '08 128i w/sport package and all the options. Montego Blue, only 10200 miles on her too. Sweet! Mine has paddle shifters, but no ipod pouch, heated seats? Yes! Tossible> Heck yes! More fun than even my old RX-7. The trim ring around the starter button is embossed with 'Year one of the 1' And she came with books and DVD's an commemorative pictures. I treat her right. She got custom BMW valve stems, a carport, and...may have a collector's iten. But, not for sale. Love my BMW1.

I owned a 1 series hatchback when I was living in Barbados….such a fun little hatchback. I wish they had brought them to the US.
My mom has always wanted a BMW and I could easily see her in one of these...not because its cheap but just because its simple (not full of tech she won't use/need) good looking, fun to drive and just a really nice car.
can't wait to pick mine up!
Great video! Thank-you!
There are lots of 1 series hatchbacks in the UK, but not many coupes and the convertible is rarest of all, especially as an M Sport, I have one
great review!
My first BMW's were 1 Series had a 2 door and a 4 door, but the hatch versión that you don't get in the US. Maybe that is why you can't find competitors. The original 1 Series is the hatch and it's competitors are the Audi A3 and VW Golf GTI. BMW later introduced the Coupe versión that you drive in the video.
Is it a good first car choice? Thinking about buying one in couple months.
I'd love to see you review the 2013 335i or 328i sport line or m sport line. i know you guys did a video on it before, but I'd like to hear your opinion and a test drive! it's my dream car at the moment
I was in an M-Sport 128i and was impressed.
You're right about it being fun to drive. Addicting even. The velcro pouch under the center console is for a garage door opener, which you can program in. Sometimes there's an issue with the back seat headrests obscuring the view when you try and look back.
Good video, I'm in the market for one of these...
do you have a video on the Mercedes ml350?
that 60-40 split seat just sold the car for me. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to fit my cello inside.
@RicBergstrom

I can put my upright bass in the car. Passenger seat. Pull head rest. Place on seat. Lean seat back almost all the way. Load the bottom of the bass into the door opening and back towards the top of the seat. Slide the neck into the foot well. Support by sliding the head rest up under it and put a seat belt around it. Throw your guitar and banjo in the back and hit the jams!!!
Does anyone agree with me that this car with a 6MT is destined to be a classic? I can’t think of any car since this, packing what the 128i offers. I eliminate 4 cylinders, front wheel drive and turbos. What’s left?
All BMW interiors are cost cutting! Great video.
I'm in the market for a entry level luxury sedan that's FWD. Looking at the CLA 250 and Buick Verano. Do you think it's worth to wait for the new A3 and 1 series to come out?
very nice review..god job
In Europe they cost almost exactly the same (around 30k €). Another potential competitor is the VW Scirocco, which is also based upon a compact car and has around 200hp as the 2 litre TSI.
Never understood why the radio was so low in bmw's.
why would u say the rear wheel drive coupe is going away and then at the end mention the 2 series?
You think by any chance you could do a video of a 2005-2009 F150?
Our mistake, you are correct, the cheapest X1 is $400 less than the 128i... very strange pricing strategy for BMW. We assume the next generation will start under $30 like the competition.
Please make sure when the 435i coupe hits the market please review
when you jave a time tested a bit older electronics and equipment parts inside, then they less prone to fail and give a headaches when you own them. Manufacturers and suppliers already tweaked and fixed problems in production lines for years.
Sofyan can you do a video on a 2014 acura mdx
Want one so bad
You should do a review of the F20 LCI :)
Ive owned one of these for about 6 years and will never get rid of it. Im not a heavy car guy I just like to drive something fun and reliable. This car has been nothing but that. I've had people think my car was a $50 000 beamer when it's clean so it still holds its style and looks.

@@peachysunshine6462 no problems that i have had personally so far. I did buy it with a leaking valve but that's really about it. I get mine regularly maintained and it's blessed me for it. Only con I have is if you live in colder locations with snow and plan to drive it like I do, the windows sometimes freeze and don't go up and down when you open and close the door. that isn't a real problem though haha.

Hey Soyfan any way you could look at the current gen Lexus ES?
When it comes to competitors, we are mainly talking about "target markets". If you don't know what that means, look it up. Performances have a little to do with it.
Got 128 convertible with 6speed today!
I knew you were in the area when I seen 93.9 lol
The one I'm looking at has the paddle shifters
I found one for 9500 cad with a 157k kms manual. Is that a good deal?
made in the US? Mine is 2010 and it’s built in Leipzig Germany??
Bought the same model love it to death a better daily than my M3.
Personally tho I can't wait for the 228/235i in the next couple years as that 2.0T is an awesome engine
Kinda disappointed there isn’t a infotainment screen standard but nice car
saying goodbye to mu 2010 128i today :( was a lot of fun
As I type this, my wife is buying a used 2012 128. She's been driving an SUV for the past several years and wanted something else, city friendly (i.e. smaller) and fun to drive. Her last car was a 2004 330i with the ZHP package - which was in our mind the last fun to drive BMW. Newer BMWs have gotten too big and this one she said, felt like her old 330.

+Astheruinsfall We've had the car for 4 months and it's been everything she was looking for...fun, comfortable and a good looking car. The only thing she doesn't like, and it's a *very* minor dislike, is that it doesn't have xenon headlights. It's a certified pre-owned and looks like it's brand new off the showroom floor. The buying experience at BMW of Austin is always top notch and this time was no different.

@Miles30
8 жыл бұрын
Just from a looks perspective the 128 has grown on me and I now prefer it over the e46. From the driving perspective, the e46 provided more feedback -steering, chassis & road feel but the 128 is still tight and fun. My only complaint is a somewhat vague steering feel - I suspect the electric assist adaptive steering which the 128 uses. That said, I give it two thumbs-up!

I def agree with your wife. The 1 series looks like a newer 2004-2005 BMW 3-Series. I'm not a big fan of the newer 3-series bc I feel like it's lost some of its sportiness and its bigger. That being said I also plan on purchasing the 2012 128i bc it resembles the 2004-2005 BMW 3-Series 👍🏻
Agreed. In a weird way I'd say that the new Scion FR-S/Subaru BR-Z may be the closest competition to the 1-series...

I have a '09 128i 6MT M-sport fully loaded with 68k on the odo. the car is by far the most reliable car i've owned...still drives like new. only things i've done as far as maintenance is brakes/fluids/air filter and replace a set of the HID bulbs on the Bi-Xenon. down the line, you will want to replace valve cover gasket/sparkplugs and coils at around 100k.
This car has an automatic, MINE has a 6-speed MANUAL, which I much prefer, and which makes it MUCH sportier (manual transmissions being what make a man one with a machine). It's 0-60 time is 5.9 seconds, and although it doesn't have M suspension, it does have BMW suspension, which is pretty good. Mine's a stripper, special ordered with 18" wheels, oyster leather upholstery and deep blue metallic paint, AND NOTHING ELSE, including having no iDrive. I expected it to be less trouble than some BMWs can be, and it is. If there's anything I love and respect it's a product that delivers, and keeps on delivering for a long time without fuss, and this one delivers! I LOVE MY 128i! But I gave it to my wife. Why would I do that? It's a long story, and it involves a private matter, so suffice to say I wanted an older Mazda Miata, another like the one I had for 11 years in CA, that and the fact that she had never driven it. She thought it was too precious, that it was my baby, and that she was afraid she might hurt it! Furthermore, she always preferred an automatic, and complained about my manual transmissions, but she just LOVES the one in this car! She thinks it is "buttery smooth," which it is. Also, she looks very good behind the wheel, with her red hair flowing against white leather in a very beautiful deep blue coupe... Furthermore, she deserves it. It was my 65th birthday present to myself, and now it belongs to my wife. Now I drive a green, mint condition 1997 Mazda Miata M-edition, an upgrade from the 1994 I owned previously. Although I love the Bimmer, I'm glad my wife has it now, because I actually still have it, to drive, and now I also have a Miata...
In terms of the terms of the terms of the terms. You grew.
i have to say. i like your old style of testing how it drives. i like when you would show us starting the car and then put it into drive and then go out on the road for a road test.
I like this car nice for a BMW entry and first!
Question: I have a 2012 128iM coming up on end of lease. Still have 10,000 miles to go on warranty. I love the car's aggressive performance and handling, its absolute solidity, and its looks. I don't love it's hard and uncomfortable seats and very hard ride (thank to M package, you feel everything). Is this a car worth hanging on to (if I can get the residual price to the right level), or better to let it go?

My man honestly you're better off keeping it. If you haven't noticed as of recently these bad boy's values are either being held or slowly but surely going up as there only now starting to be appreciated for what it is in the car scene. had a BMW coupe once, a nice car,
i actually want this or the infiniti g37s
Its a good looking car
The 370Z and Boxster do not have back seats, they are more hard-core sports cars. The Genesis competes more with a Mustang or G37, it's much larger than the 1-series. The STI is an AWD rally car, it could never match the refinement of the BMW. The RX-8 has been gone since 2011 and it competed with the Z when it was out.
How does a 09 128i with 40k for $10,000 sound?? Should i buy it. The 1 series is all new to me I'm used to the 3 series.

Sounds good,im pickung up a 2011 128i today for 16,500 and it has 43,000 miles.wish i was getting it for 10 lol
I disagree. Maybe in a market sense they don't compete, but when you are comparing them based on the actual vehicles themselves, the comparison is quite natural (especially the 128i which is pretty close in price to a fully loaded BR-Z). Similar power numbers, same layout, same general dimensions, etc...
As much as I love my 3 series, I still love these cars. I'd get a 135i M-Sport for myself if I were buying. And I totally agree that without the Lighting Package it looks like something is missing. But a lot of people won't get them so having it on mine makes it stand out :)
The CLA is very nice. However, I'd wait till the A3 comes out before making a decision. If you want an idea of what it'll look like, search "Audi S3 2014" here on KZread.
The reason I'm here is because I have a 135, and I hate the mirrors. They are smaller, "sport" mirrors, and the glass is heated & auto-tinting, but the visibility is just not great. The space on the glass is so small compared to typical cars, there's no room for even a miata in the rear view. So I discovered the lower model BMWs like the 128 actually have larger mirrors and came here to compare. I didn't expect the actual housing to be larger too 😅 Those things look like donkey ears compared to sleeker sport ones. But I might just swap them over anyways because I hate not being able to see what's behind me when I'm changing lanes. Saftey & Function > Tech & Aesthetics (mostly!)
Just got one same spec as the video and $5500 with 70k miles clean title no accidents. This is the best car

No idea why this popped up a decade after it was published, but here we are. I am currently the proud owner of a 2010 128i. It is the third 128i I've owned and 5th 1 series. Too confined for larger people? I'm a big guy, in height and girth. I have never felt cramped in the car. I do sometimes feel like my 2019 Ranger is a bit of a tight fit, but never the bimmer.

+TheWolvaren1 Agreed
i can see how this could compete with the brz/frs, overall their pretty similar cars(2 door, rwd, etc) but in america BMW is considered much more high class than a subaru or a scion/toyota. Also in russia, were im from, the focus/golf/astra are no were near to competing with any bmw, those cars are considered the average car for any normal person, while bmw is more elite class and much more expensive. also the 1 series comes with different powertrains, while the ft86/brz only comes with one.
You're acting like styling is the be all end all of a car. BMW styling is quite nice if you ask me especially if you opt for the sport package or M sport package. Do remember BMW is more than just the style. It's about power, handling, feel, heft and how well it can put a smile on your face. German cars aren't reliable but simpler ones like this 1 series is easy and cheaper to run. The 3 Series and MBZ C Class are also not too expensive to maintain.

Cool car, but the only trim you should buy in this is the 135. Serious sleeper car...
I don't know about your friends, but most of the people i work with, their company buys BMWs 760Lis or Mercedes S class S600 as their personal/business vehicles. And talk about reliability, indeed more sophisticated cars are more prone to electrical/mechanical problems. But those can be fixed easily under the coverage of warranty. And to answer your question, yes. But, the "others" refer to people with the same economic competence as those who can afford luxury cars and successful in life.
Cute car I'd consider the 1 series due to the fact that I see the 3 series too often. I'd get the 135i...
