2011 Wappapello Flood Fight: Temporary Rock Dike Construction
Ғылым және технология
Durning the 2011 Wappapello Flood Fight, a temporary rock dike was constructed along the lake side of Wappapello Lake's dam overflow spillway in efforts to keep high water flowing through the dam's gates instead of over the spillway where it would damage the highway and other infrastructure.

Being from the area, it failed, and the highway was destroyed anyway. They tried, but levels rose again and ended up washing over the emergency spillway. If you look at google maps, you'll see where the highway was redirected. Most people wish they would have built a bridge instead of redirecting highway T.
O que essa constrocao.?👍
Checking google maps, it looks like they improved the site adding large concrete pipes under the highway.

I am very surprised they, again, have to operate the emergency spillway within a few years. Once you use the emergency spillway, you basically lose all water management capabilities. Looks like an upgraded or second main spillway would be a good idea.

At least it was protected against back cutting by the gutter at the base. I wonder if there was any footage of the 2017 event?

An earth filled dam like the one here will inevitably be destroyed once water reaches it's top. To avoid this, in addition to normal spillways emergency overflow are created. At 0:56 you look at the emergency overflow, water will overflow that wall before reaching the top of the dam, but there is no real spillway. It will simply flow across the grass and the highway likely destroying both. Still better than a broken dam. In this situation the engineers decided to block the emergency overflow. They allowed the water to raise a little higher than originally designed to avoid damage to the highway.

Just like everything the corps of engineers do. They made the problem even worse. If they would have left it alone as designed. It would have barely went over. But government then and today. Thats why. It caused more damage. And to this day it would have costed less than they spent that then made it worse. And to this day it shows.
